  • You brave RAF bastards...Salute

  • This is what being English and England is all about, English men and women stand up and be proud of your country and its history & dont let the EU or the looney left take it away from you, the face of this once great nation is changeing fast so keep hold of your history because its your identity........God bless the men and women of 617 Squadron....we will keep the faith.

  • To think about the huge amount of air defence that would have been on that damn and how slow the lancaster seems to fly; I don't even think I would want to be in the tornados on that fateful night. Massive appreciation goes out to the men who flew on that courageous mission!

  • long live the queen, prince phil, the empire and the corgis!!!!

  • It is absolutely incredible that we have one of those beauties still flying. It is an honour and a privilege to experience her.

  • @slashsmartyr

And if there is justice the other taxiing Lanc in Lincolnshire will by airworthy in a few years too

  • what knob's disliked this, thay just don't know there freedeom, it british, and the most power-full sound ever

  • Seen this video a million times. But the Lanc emerging from behind the trees always makes the hair at the back of my neck stand up straight. Gorgeous, simply gorgeous.

  • Bomber Command was a true way to bring commonwealth & empire men together.

What a team & I don't think we will ever see anything like it again which is a shame.

I have nothing but a tearful respect to men not just from UK but also from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa & men from the Caribbean too.

    Hats off to you all!

  • @LordGeorgeRodney Long live the Commonwealth!

  • Should have made it drop a football xD

  • 1:36 gives me shivers!

  • such a wonderful aircraft

  • haaa..amazing...

  • The Majesty of a Lancaster is unbeatable, the sounds (not noise) of those RR Merlins from the days when Britain meant something and not just be Europe's 'Whipping-Boy'.

  • @rgadave .....true but don't forget 40% of bomber command aircrews were commonwealth........nearly all of those Canadian, New Zealanders and Australians..........many 617 squadon members were commonwealth. Most bomber crews were mixed nationalities

  • @Aussiephil99 Quite right too Aussiephil99, Britain obviously meant a great deal to those fine people as well as 'home-grown' heroes, in fact in the small village where I live which has a WW2 airfield there are several NZ and Oz aircrew buried in the small churchyard so far away from their homelands. Respect.

  • @Aussiephil99 and south africans;)

  • i cried when i watched this, i wish i could have been there especially just to say thank you to those who served to give me my freedom. God bless you all

  • Thank Goodness for these brave men that played a huge part of the freedom we all know today from the Nazi's. Thankyou!

  • Such elegance.

  • I prefer the B-29. However I give the British a lot of credit for keeping history alive with these events. They even restored the airfield that Glenn Miller and pilot took their fateful journey. America wants to turn everything historical into a strip mall.

  • Before it was named 617 is was squadron X

  • The last 30 sec have no class ;) I love lancasters.

  • Neato!

  • Unfortunately - pride is lost to Political cuts, the defense budget first. Just so they can cater to social programs. The winner here is the next Hitler that starts WWIII.

What are you gonna do now - use spitballs? the Nimrod gone, the Harriers gone, the pilots gone - I guarantee politicians won't be flying - just ready to abdicate to some dictator as you are sitting ducks. A Canadian here - but this is giving up in the biggest way. Europe's a hotbed - you just made it a steamrollers paradise.

  • @castlite The new invader is called the EU.

  • @bermudarailway - I absolutely agree

  • Ever since I was a boy I loved the Lancaster and to see one flying here bought the shiggles to my spine. I sat up as a seven year old and watched the film and read the book later on.Id love to see a lancaster fly.

  • British and proud!! Makes living in this once great country all worth it

  • I Was fishing once on the lake below the Mohne dam One night, When i was stationed in germany it was so spooky you could almost hear the planes roaring down the lake. When you stand on the mohne dam and see the enormity of the task these lads had you just have to whisper to yourself RESPECT.

  • Now that was special!

  • the Lancaster is surprisingly manuverable for such a big aircraft

  • i dont know why or what, but there is something very special about the lancaster and the spitfire

  • Sweet

  • I can not start to explain how brave the airman of that era were.

    May god bless you all.

  • Outstanding

  • Shivers up the spine stuff!

  • Fantastic. There is only one thing better sounding than a Merlin, and thats four on a Lancaster. Well done to AussiePhil Reenacting the war (previous posts) I think you won.

  • when i come to power i shall make all airplanes f go on prop-shaft again.

  • Apres moi le deluge- After me the flood (Motto of the Dambusters)

Respect to the Dambusters may you never be forgotten.

  • Wow, Would love to have been there to see & hear that Lanc, but mostly to pay my respects to the brave men who took part in that amazing raid on the dams. As a Kiwi, I was soooo proud to see our very own hero, Mr. Les Munro among the crowd attending as he is the only Dambuster pilot still with us today. I live in the same town as Mr. Munro & along with every other NZ'er, I pray Les will be with us for many years to come. Go Kiwis !!!!!

  • Bloody good show! That Lanc coming in like that is just breathtaking.

  • Top video- looks great- and don't forget that we were fighting for years before the US joined us. Their contribution was massive but for a while we were on our own.

  • IF THE USA NEVER HELPED YOU GUY YOU ALL WOULD BE COOKED

  • @sertox12345 yes and were very greatful but i'm sure it may have taken a few more years but i'm sure we would have still won :L

  • @sertox12345 And so would you!

After all you sat on your arses until Pearl Harbour apart from a few brave souls that risked losing their citizenship by making there way via Canada to join the RAF when we stood ALONE!

    God bless the Eagle Squadrons!

  • Was Talking to my grandfather about the comparisons between the Lancaster and B17 and sorry if it sounds one sided as he was a lancaster pilot in ww2 (75 squadron), but he was saying the lancaster could carry a much bigger bomb load and the rolls royce merlins could out perform the Wright cyclone engines used in the B17, he had nothing but admiration for the U.S crews and the help to defeat the Nazi's, My G/f did his 30 missions, had 6mths off then did another 35 missions, lost a lot of friends

  • @stockcar269s Total respect to your grandfather and all his companions, i take my hat off to you all. God bless

  • @stockcar269s The losses were horrific for both Bomber Command and the USAF. Recently found out I had a great uncle who served in RAF through letters of my American granddad. He talked about my nan having two brothers, one of whom he met, and the other - Joe - was mentioned as missing on a raid over Germany, that the family always held out hope he was on the mainland. Later turned out the Lancaster he was a gunner on crashed into the N sea. He'd only been married six weeks...heart breaking.

  • @stockcar269s it could carry a bigger bomb load it was the only bomber able to carry the tall boy bomb

  • @calumknight1984 ..yep that's right..........but you forgot it also carried the grand slam........weighing.....22000lb... the tall boy was only 12000lb

  • @stockcar269s Us brits arent just a pretty face lol created the best WW2 Aircraft imo, Spitfire, Hurricane, Lancaster, Wellington, Hawker Tempest, Hawker Typhoon etc. Great aircraft. Its fantastic to see the BBMF every time i see it, lovely sight and it makes you remember all those who took part, who died and lived during WW2 and they shall never be forgot.

  • @mrtalkischeap ,you forgot the mossie,

  • @bigchiefmingingbolok ah yes and the de havilland mosquito

  • @mrtalkischeap and the Halifax.... lot's to remember

  • @TBM3EAvenger lol and the halifax, there is too many to name lol

  • @stockcar269s thats probably true stockcar. Were they merlin V-12s like were put in our P-51 Mustangs? I definetly respect the Lancaster crews things like the dambuster raids...that took guts to do.

It did seem like B-17s could take more of a beating vs the Lancaster, my Grandfather was at Normandy (US Navy) and later part of the occupational forces in Germany. He never spoke much about it understandably. Respect to your Grandfather

  • @Racingnut24 Yip Merlin V12's x4, Same Engines that powered the Spitfire, Hurricane and Mustang. There was actually a non supercharged version that was used in Tanks as well ( rolls royce griffon i think it was called), Rolls royce must have got it right huh, There are still Merlin engines sitting in sheds down in this part of the world, in the 70's and early 80's a few guys chopped them up somewhat and used them to power Midgets and Sprintcars down here in New Zealand

  • @stockcar269s definetly, The Merlins were far superior to our allison engines which were in the original Mustangs (allisons werent supercharged)..they actually had to be fitted for the bigger Merlin engines. Glad to see a few of them are still around there. They are around here in the states as well as are Mustangs but primarily used now for air racing in Reno, Nevada..

  • @Racingnut24 Yes, but the best Merlins were made by Packard in the States.

Also, the Lancaster had Merlins that were mostly made by Packard. So, the States played a vital contribution in this.

  • @viceroytennis definetly :) however we should never forget what the UK did. Without you guys holding out as long as you did in 1940 even with the small amt of volunteer pilots we could send... Well I wont say it would of been impossible to go after Hitler but it would of been much much harder because our B-17s and 24's didnt have intercontinental range and fighters..forget it. Its a scary thought

respect to you and indeed all the allies during WWII :)

  • @stockcar269s ...the Rolls Royce Griffon replaced the Merlin and was used in the last versions of the the Spitfire like the XVI and XXII and in the Spiteful

  • @Aussiephil99 Yea sorry bout that, I put down the Griffon where i fact i should have put down the Rolls Royce Meteor instead which was used in tanks etc and not the griffon, my mistake

  • @stockcar269s My Grandfather was a rear-gunner in 550 squadron. 29 flights in the rear gun. Got shot down on his 30th flight whilst in the mid-upper turret. The only night he didn't take his mascot with him (also, he stowed his parachute at the bottom of the ladder and not in the normal stowage!)

  • You must be very proud of your grandfather. He and his colleagues were very brave men and we all owe them a great debt of gratitude.

  • @stockcar269s even tho i respect the RAF i am 100% USAAF/USAF. and yes the lancaster could hold a hell of a lot more bombs; i believe it was because they had no ball turret. The B-17 would have a lot larger bomb load if their was no ball turret. and that was probably the only negative thing you could say about the lancaster, that is had no ball turret.

  • @stockcar269s to those who served, fought and bled, for our lives now. god bless your amazing grandfater, and those who were with him

  • @stockcar269s if you read the Pullitzer Prize winning book The Making of the Atomic Bomb by R Rhodes you will see the only aircraft up for the job of carrying a nuke was a Lancaster bomber.

The B-29's were barely up for the job!

  • @LordGeorgeRodney "Silverplate" B-29s had modified bomb bays & borrowed the RAF's shackle used for Tallboys.

A logistical question is could Lancs have gotten airborne from Okinawan runways? I think they were too short for B-29s in August 45- they kept flying from more remote Tinian- 1500 miles one way. And how would Lancs have dealt with escaping the double shockwave from the blast as the 29 could buy itself more time dropping from a higher altitude (31K vs 24K feet) and had more speed.

  • @orcstr8d HA HA!

I don't know perhaps you should ask Leslie Groves that question as he was advised that he should use the aircraft for that single purpose..

  • @LordGeorgeRodney Were it possible to ask General Groves, he'd likely defer to someone who actually flew combat missions in WW2.

I like the Lancaster for how well it did in Europe. I'd like to find out how well it could do from Okinawa with either bomb which weighed almost as much as the 12K Tall Boy from a 7000 foot runway and heading for one of the 4 target cities of H&N + Kokura and Niigata, and maybe Tokyo.

  • @stockcar269s - My father flew 30 missions in B-17s. The war ended before he finished his tour. I knew a Lancaster tail gunner and he couldn't believe that the B-17s went out in daylight. The reason for the much larger bombloads was that one of the initial specs for the B-17 was to drop a ton of bombs on the Panama Canal from bases in the SW US if an enemy took the canal. And that was 1933-34! Bombers at that time carried a few hundred pounds. If they carried more, they had no range.

  • @stockcar269s

my great grandfather flew one of these, he got shot down by the Swiss in bad weather. I am an admirer of all such people who flew for our great island nation to protect us British citizens.

My great grandfather is called Horace Badge, Google him.

    God Bless

  • Excellent video, and I haven't had such a good laugh at the comments section in months!

  • How many people realise that the original dam Barnes Wallace used to test the high explosives still exists in the forest above Caban Coch reservoir in the Elan Valley in Mid Wales.

It is about a mile walk from the visitor centre just outside Rhayader and apart from a massive gaping hole through the centre of it, it still stands nearly twenty feet tall.

Even the original buildings used by Barnes and his men whilst building the dam still remain.

  • dhart go play world series baseball where only you yanks are the world champions ! hmmmmmmmm the only team wins the world lol lmfao !

  • Please support the appeal to build a memorial to Bomber Command. There is a link on the Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight's website.

    Lest We Forget.

  • @cakeyspig where's the address!! God Bless em!

  • damn(no pun intented) good low level flying!

  • The 'jets' are good but there's no "Majesty" there !.

  • the old un's are still the best ;)

  • Great video, relly gives a feeling what it was like

  • i heard the same director for the lord of the rings is redoing the damm busters in 3d but dont quote me on it

nice vid btw ty for uploading it

  • Yes Peter Jackson is currently remaking it in New Zealand. He wants to keep it as realistic as he can, and as close to the 1956 version............but Guy Gibsons black Labrador will be called Nidge in the film and not Nigger.

  • when is the remake scheduled to come out?

  • It's in production now i think.......it's being made in New Zealand....they have built a full scale Lanc replica and there will be alot of CGI

  • @Aussiephil99 typical pc gone mad!

  • The Lancaster is my all time faverate bomber. The noice of one is load I can just imagine the noice of a squadron flying over.

  • If only the bloody jerries saw those modern jets coming at them back in 1943 with guns-a-blazin'!

I'd still like to see the raid re-created with the two surviving Lancs doing the job. Bombed up, lights on, 60 feet, at night, Monhe Dam, the whole nine yards!

BOMB GONE ! (no boom though)

Signed: the Nephew of a Tail-Gunner lost on his way back home from bombing PEENEMUNDE! 426 (Thunderbird) Sqdn, Lancaster Mk IIs DS-674 OW-B No. 6 (RCAF) Bomber Group, RAF Bomber Command, Linton

  • some squad the brits when they stood alone they did and there baws where made of nelsons cannonball at 1811

  • fuck off cunts, its rememberance day, show some respect

  • Well folks, I know nothing about the strategic value of the raid. All I know is that the Lanc going over is very awe-inspiring, and humbling, to someone whose parents' generation was involved.

  • i wouldn't say little to no effect, they did get some factories with the flood. but then there is also the psychological aspect. i cant recall the exact damage done though, its been a while since i read the book. still, a great story.

  • It wasn't a failed operation...two of the dams were successfully breached......and it involved some of the most incredible bravery and flying skills of any mission in WW2......why shouldn't Britons be proud of them.

  • dhart1977 needs to brush up on his history of WW2, its people like you who give the US a bad name. When the US where over in the Pacific sunning it on beaches, The British where defending their homeland, and training american pilots.....yes..TRAINING american pilots.......And to say the US helped us win the war, GROW UP.....the fact that the Germans tried to invade Russia in the middle of winter won us the war......Thank the Russians, not the yanks!

  • Whats up dhart1977........do you not like facing facts? you have been brainwashed by your hollywood production companies and the hero attitude your poor nation adopt. How many films have the Americans made about the war that have been proven to be false, ead some books and stop going to the cinema, u will learn more! Suppose your going to tell us all now that you defeated the Vietnamese as well now are you! our arguments on here are being put to sleep by people giving you correct information,

  • why are you even commenting on a vid of a lancaster?? what bought you to this vid?? did you just want to ruin a rememberance video?? and why do you always feel the need to tarnish the memory of sacrifices made by our country? i actually came here because i appreciate aviation, and respect what airmen did in WW2 (whatever nationallity), if this vid offends you so much, why keep coming back??

  • just goes to show there are plenty of ill informed wankers in the world, nuff said

  • dhart77............haven't you got the message yet. You chose the wrong video to come on and slag off the British. We all know the USAAF would never in a million years have been able to pull off this raid...they couldn't even navigate at night let alone at low level at night.

Just go away and watch 'Saving Private Ryan"...or some other make believe shit Hollywood film that glorifies Americans.

  • dhart77....what a fucking idiot you are!!!!!!

    Facts!!

    1. After the Schweinfurt raid the Americans were going to switch to night bombing....but didn't because trials showed their navigators couldn't navigate at night.

    2. Analysis after the war showed so called US precision day bombing was no more accurate than RAF area night bombing. A fact even admitted to by the Americans

As one US General put it

The RAF precision bombed area targets...whilst the American area bombed precision targets

  • Well either the norden bombsite didn't work or the crews were incapable of using it because US day so called precision bombing was woefully inaccurate as admitted by your own generals after the war. The statement you made about the US being able to do a better job of the dams raid is a joke isn't it...it's just to make me react....because surely no one could be so stupid as to make a comments like that............maybe you are!!!

  • 100 feet my arse..they usually arrived late at wrong target!!!...and then spread their bombs everywhere. You couldn't have done the dam busting raid because your pilots didn't have the skill to fly such a raid...and you didn't have the technology to do it...ie dam busting mine!!!

You typify all that is disliked about Americans. You are stupid, uneducated, arrogant, insular , and to top that all of.............you are a cunt!! Now fuck off and read some books and get a decent education.

  • You should stop watching WW2 American propaganda films.,,the Americans then as they are now were unprofessional!!...and couldn't hit a barn from 10 feet The dam busting mine was used because conventional bombs would have been ineffective against such thick concrete. The bomb exploded underwater and cracked the concrete...it needed to bounce to get over the torpedo nets installed....now get a fucking education you thick prick.

  • Am reading the Big Show by Pierre Clostermann at the moment. He is scathing about yank pilots. The biggest danger to RAF aircraft was

    1 German Fighters

    2 Flak

3 Lunatic unprofessional US pilots with zero aircraft recognition skills who constantly tried to shoot them down

America might be rich and well equipped but their training and professionalism in WW2 was light years behind the RAF. Never in a million years would the US have been able to pull of the dams raid. You are DREAMING fuckwit!!!

  • Your last 2 statements once again clearly indicate your intelligence, knowledge and maturity...are you 32 or 12!!. I'm giving up on you it's like trying to teach a 3 year old physics. Hopefully there will be another Sept 11....and you'll be in the building

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks mate.......cheers I love you too......yep 9/11 was a low blow but you deserve it......you have spent 2 weeks rubbishing my country (of birth)....tarnishing the memory of those killed on the dambusters raid let alone the 55000 killed in RAF bomber command......so put your violin away......stop waving your stars and stripes....and grow up

  • I actually like Americans......my cousin lives there......and has 2 kids who are technically Americans (by birth).................I just don't like you because your so ill informed ignorant ridiculously nationalistic and stupid and choose to come on a dambuster tribute video and slag of the RAF

  • Comment removed

  • You have no sources because you provide no information!!!! About either American or British aircraft..... YOU KNOW NOTHING!!!!!!

You think you are intelligent yet you constantly refer to me as 'bitch'....oh how mature. You upload IRON EAGLE videos (A movie for 8 year olds) and to top that all off you are fan of WWE!!!!!!....how can anybody take you seriously.......It's a pity you weren't a victim of one of those weekly American high school massacres your lovely culture seems to enjoy so much.

  • Comment removed

  • Presentations to schools...wow that's frightening.....no wonder Americans are so ill informed if people like you are teaching their history.....and now you're threatening to 'beat me up'....would it be with some of those WWE holds. It's amazing how tough people can be when they are sitting behind a computer on the other side of the world.

To have knowledge you need an objective view and research from many perspectives........you see history only through your stars and stripes tinted glasses.

  • Comment removed

  • My sources are 30 odd years of readng books and watching documentaries authored by Brits, Americans, Aussies, Kiwis, Canadians Germans , Russians, Japanese.......and discussion with REAL veterens.

Your sources comics, American war films and some old man who cleaned the toilets at the Womens Auxillary Ballooon corps in 1944.

Dingo boy!!.......hilarious.......once again an amazing display of your intellect and humour. We all know that America is to comedy what Iceland is too sunbathing

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah you have been reading history books written by Americans!!!!!.....otherwise you wouldn't have the quite ridiculously biased pro American views you have, particularly the one about the US being able to do a better job on the dams raid...that comment alone just illustrates what little knowledge you have of the raid itself, the technology involved and the skills of the crews that carried out the raid.

And you think you know about WW2. Why look at this video if you don't admire 617 squadron!

  • You talk of me dishonouring veterens................you have rubbished the 400,000 British that died in WW2. Britain lost as many dead as the US but had 1/4 the population!! You have rubbished RAF bomber command 55000 dead out 120,000 served...you have rubbished 617 squadron 55 dead on the dams raid alone......55 dead on one raid by one squadron....get of your high horse and fuck off.

  • Comment removed

  • I at no point said we didn't need you....what I and every body else objects to are yanks like you who think American won the war on their own had the best equipment were braver than anybody else.........suffered more than anybody else. It's all BULLSHIT.....and if you had any education you'd know this is true.

For every yank name on a memorial in a small town they'd be 4 or 5 in an equivalent sized British, Australian, New Zealand town.....so cut the sob story about YOUR veterens!!!!

  • The bottom line is that you entered WW2 at the last minute and then tried to take all the credit for winning it.

Your pilots were brave but on numerous instances showed themselves to be poorly trained and unprofessional and a danger to themselves and their allies. Your soldiers performed adequately......usually far outnumbering opposition and with complete air superiority they had the odds in their favour. Your navy had little influence on the western front...apart from a few convoys.

  • I said the ground troops were adequate.......Hitler regarded British troops as better. ALLIED air superiority was just as much due to the RAF as it was the USAAF. Air superiority wasn't because of better allied pilots it was because of sheers numbers and the lack of fuel available to the Luftwaffe. If you read any book written by Luftwaffe pilots they considered RAF pilots superior to US pilots.

  • Comment removed

  • Adequate means OK......not great.....just OK. The USAF had an absolutely ridiculous method of confirming kills...all a pilot had to say was i think I got him and a victory was credited. The less said about the gunners on your bombers the better......utterly absurd claims were made by them.

  • Comment removed

  • If a German attacked a box formation as many as 40-50 gunners may be firing on him. When he went up in flames they all claimed him....yet only one aircraft was shot down. If the claims made by us bombers was true the Luftwaffe would have ceased to exist in weeks.

  • I have read reports of US bombers claiming to have shot down more aircraft than German records show were even in the air at the time......and on top of that many of the germans made it home anyway

  • There were so many 109s because it was in production throughout the war....and before it...as was the Spitfire. The P-51...FW-190 etc came into production much later. Remember most of the German forces were on the Eastern Front.

  • Of all the comments you have written this is perhaps the most stupid. The Spitfire was produced in many variants. The Spit outclassed the Bf-109E during the battle of britain Yes initially the Spit V was outclassed by the FW-190..the answer was the Spit IX.....in fact I'm not even going to argue with you on this one because you are just talking complete and utter shit!!!!!!!! Later version Spits could out fly anything including P-51s!!!!

  • The mustang was purchased the the British because they thought they may have a fighter shortage...it never eventuated. The mustang was relegated to army cooperation duties in British service until Rolls Royce designers put a merlin in it and modified the airframe. I have never ever read a book that said the 109 was a better fighter than the spitfire.........and I've read 100s....even Americans that flew Spits loved them

  • Actually I've read 'Wings on my Sleeve' by Eric Brown......es Royal Navy test pilot who has flown more aircraft than anyone....guiness world record (487).....including suicidal ME-163. He doesn't rate the 109 as better.....and rates the Spit XII in his top 20 aircraft he ever flew the 109 wasn't in the top 20. The Lancaster was number 1 , B-29 no 2.

  • naval aviators are usually more skilled than land based pilots..this guy flew 487 aircraft...including all the fighters flown by the major combatants of WW2.............I think he knows what he talking about

  • dhart77.....Fly straight and level!!!!!...you clearly have absolutely no idea what a test pilot does to make that comment. It is the skill of a test pilot that enables an aircraft to be tested to it's extreme boundaries....something an average pilot doesn't .....and can't do. You don't understand how skilful this man is. If you ever flew aircraft yourself..........you'd understand jumping from one aircraft to another is NOTHING like moving from one car to another

  • Regarding the statement "has it's own way of operating and takes time to fine tune it"

..Thanks for telling me about how to fly an aeroplane. I have a commercial licence........instructors rating.......aerobatic rating....and have flown 7 types of aircraft....and have over 1000hours flight experience.

  • My point is.......how many hours are in your log book?........answer.....0.

Don't lecture me about how it feels to fly any aeroplane. .....Don't tell me anything about aeroplanes..........I won't tell you about computers...or how to be a network administrator....I don't even really know what it means.

  • One more thing...........Brown WAS a fighter pilot in the Fleet Air Arm and he flew in combat....and few fighter pilots of any nationality have flown both the aircraft flown by the allied and axis forces. No one ...I repeat no one...is more qualified to make a comparison than this man

  • Many of your astronauts were naval aviators...including Neil Armstrong........I suppose you think he's an idiot. Anyway Brown is Royal Navy not US Navy....and the most qualified person in the world to make this judgement.........he even taught Americans how to be test pilots.

  • Comment removed

  • To make such a general statement about Spitfires just shows you know nothing about the subjest. Early models had 990hp engines.........late war Rolls Royce Griffon powered versions had 2200hp and could fly at 470mph in level flight. The Spit IX the most produced version was better than or a match for any fighter in the sky at the time....and a Spit could out turn anything.

  • Regarding air superiority the US ground forces were operating under skies patrolled by both RAF and US aircraft. In fact Patton during the Normandy campaign specifically asked for RAF Typhoon strikes against German armour because P-47s and P-51s couldn't get the job done.

  • The mustang had 6 50 cals...I'm only quoting what I read.....Patton himself requested the RAF. The krauts were terrified of Typhoons and Eisenhower himself said the Typhoon played a significant role in the defeat of the Germans in the Normandy campaign. The supreme allied commander singling out a specific aircraft.

  • No not the same casualty rate........Britain 4 times the casualty rate to that of the US............you aren't very good at maths are you.

  • Why do Americans have such insecurity problems that they feel the need to rubbish the achievements of others? VERY odd and rather pathetic really

  • Comment removed

  • Give up Dhart1977, you have clearly lost this argument, christ there are yanks on here agreeing with Aussiephil. The Americans DID NOT win the war, it all down to Hitlers own stupidness, he made a massive mistake taking on the Russians in mid winter, which led to his downfall.
