I never got to the point of thinking about whether or not avatar was racist cause as I was watching it I was too overwhelmed with the KNOWLEDGE of how it was insulting my intelligence.
When have you seen primitive aliens?Aliens are always technologically advanced (And modeled after whites).1st movie that they aren't advanced & they make them black. They find a planet full of black people in the year 2154,and its a completely non-developed hunter gatherer society? No spaceships,no fortresses,no houses.Bare feet & ass.
So if there's an all-black planet out there,it's a jungle. They haven't invented or built anything.Just like they'd be here if it wasn't for white folks, huh?
There's plenty of racism in Avatar.Lets not kid ourselves, the Na'vi were modeled after African bushmen, with a sprinkle of Native Americana. They had the clothes, accents,BRAIDS,bow & arrows and were played by black/Indian actors. There's the obvious "white messiah" theme. Its also racist to whites cuz it portrays them as evil....
I dont think it even matters if Avatar is racist.I think the most racist thing is that ppl feel black ppl dont have right or reason to question if it is.People analyze art.Film theory/critisism is taught in school. If I said Avatar was anti-Imperialism or anti-Military,nobody'd be mad at that.We could have a healthy debate. But if I say it was racist,I get "You're retarted..STFU..Its just a movie..Enjoy it."Why?Why am I treated as a childish, paranoid, crybaby, race bater for having an opinion?
You white people just don't see things from others perspective that is why you don't see it as racist. Try seeing things from a Black, African, Jew, Native american, Muslim, Asian, aborigine point of view. To you it's a wonderful movie..and means nothing. Look at avatar from a historical point of view.
Who do you think the avatar represents? indian, african, muslim
Who do the whites/invaders represent? white, europeans...that simple, now go read a history book.
@On3Thought I was going to ramble on about the movie but you said it perfectly lol..if a white person does not save the day than it's not a good movie. If a minority saves themselves then noone cares or watches.
@On3Thought Don't forget - conquers the monster that few in Na'vi history have with the greatest of ease. The last person to do that was someone's grandfather's grandfather. He just says to himself,"Hey.I bet this thing won't look up." and jumps on his back.So if theyd've been smart, they could've done that a long time ago.
@youngdrodeau The creator of the film was asked why isn't there any black people in the film? In a interview with TMZ ; His response: "They're blue in my movie".
@On3Thought Yeh.Doesn't surprise me.They're obviously black. But I'm not even mad at Cameron.I think he had good intentions with the racial undertones.I dont think he realized how offensive it was.
What pisses me off is people acting as if they don't see the racism like black people are just crazy & overly sensitive. Its patronizing & dismissive. And it frustrates me to no end. They're dismissing our feelings by underminding our intelligence.
I mean gurl .u dk what r u talkin about.

the white guy betrays the tribe, sleeps with the princess of the tribe, beats up the
prince of the tribe in front of his own people, gets the tribe leader killed, the first
to get his prayers answered by the God of the tribe, and the end he becomes king
of the tribe. I just simplified the entire film for you...that's why its racist.

@On3Thought so if the actor was black that would be ok for him to do all that stuff.....or would that also be racist in some way
