What a travesty, even if you are not religious you can still appreciate a beautiful piece of art and history. Ohhh, that's right, communists like Zapatero hate beauty and life. Spain is contracepting and aborting it's way into extinction. Spain needs to reclaim it's Catholic heritage to survive.

I looked this up and an April 26 article in La Razon claims they are dismantling the statue because it's falling apart, and that they are intending to restore it. I don't think it's necessarily shameful to block off the area either. They reported that debris was falling from the statue. Not only that but the work they're doing is potentially very dangerous and you don't want people being injured. That story seems to make sense.

So which story is true? Is it a restoration? Or a desecration?

@BeingBob - I hope you are right, but once Zapatero decided to destroy a delicate equilibrium the mistrust is justifiable. The monument of Franco in Madrid was also at first removed due to some technical reasons and then the law was passed to remove all the Franco monuments. This is something else, because the statue is purely religious, nevertheless a close watch is necessary. One way of carrying out destruction is to excuse it by technical reasons.

@ComeHomeCatholics : You know; the big problem with the Valle de los Caidos monument it is the fact, that never represented a reconciliation monument for the spaniards. It really means much more, the shameful support that Franco government had from the Roman Catholic bishops. Spain clergy today, it is not sold out to government decision as they were in the 1930's. Most of clergy today doesn't support a dictator in power. They are for democracy. They aren't fascists

This is something very dangerous. This shows how much harm can a politician do, only because he holds grudges. But my question is of legal nature: does this are belong to the Church? If so, was it possible to dismantle anything without the permission of the Church authorities. Who is allowed to make such decisions? On what legal basis?

That it is being undertaken by Zapatero's government is not really that surprising considering the Socialist Party's "no love lost " attitude towards the Catholic Church. However it is indeed appalling that the Prime Minister will undertake such an assault on religious freedom in a country that propagated Roman Catholicism throughout the Spanish Empire that spanned the globe.
