Question about this movie that has always troubled me...
If Picard could leave the Nexxus and return to any point in time with Kirk, why did he return to the planet to fight Soren? Why didn't he return to a point when Soren was on board the Enterprise where he could have just had him thrown in the brig? Certainly wouldn't make for a very entertaining conclusion, but, then again, Picard might not have thought of that. Move that to the column of Regrets, Mr. Picard.
@compbrat75 All the TNG movies are designed to be actiony. That means Picard has to punch his problems away. I mean he could have returned to before Soren encountered the Nexus and changed his travel plans... or you know, shot him.
At least they got the affect of inertia partially right when the saucer finally comes to a halt. The best part of the movie is here though... Data's wonderful expression of "Oh Shit!"
The thing I never understood is why the Enterprise D didn't instantly unleash it's full complement of weaponry on them the moment they started shooting. I doubt that they would have lasted long.
Ok here's my question. How is it that they didn't check Geordi's visor after he was released from captivity? Them releasing him so easily would have made me suspicious immediately. Why didn't they scan for probes or transverse? Somebody should have been court marshaled for such gross incompetence. After all, an irreplaceable piece of Federation property was just destroyed, and most likely lives were lost.
@Newenlightenmentnow Because to do all that would have prevented the ass kicking of the Enterprise & its resulting destruction with all the special effects, cinematic flair & appeal to the audience along with it & no one would have bothered to go & see the movie without such scenes. Seriously man, this is just a movie, don't take it so seriously
@gigoer I know that...I'm just pointing out a flaw in their command decision making. Plus, I'm pointing out that perhaps by TNG the federation had become a bit too naive.
@Newenlightenmentnow Any episode would have a million plotholes if you studied the techno babble & different things captains say, it's just something we have to live with. I agree that TNG did get a bit naive though, happy ending every time, last minute rescues every week. Voyager got a little more ballsy e.g. Borg getting ther ass kicked by Species 8472, Equinox being a ship of mass murderers etc & Vulcan destroyed in the 2009 movie, Trek isn't as naive as it used to be
@gigoer The fact is, I liked Enterprise for one reason...it was a bit closer to reality. Sure humans had high hopes of being peaceful. Who wouldn't prefer peace to war? And meeting an agreeable species is great. However, anyone that thinks having real soliders like the MACOs aboard, or that star fleet shouldn't somewhat resemble the military is naive in the extreme. Otherwise, why would the ships have weapons at all? Also that humanity would not develop cloaking...laughable.
@gigoer You call it naive; I call it idealistic. IMO Trek lost its courage and its moral compass when Gene passed away. It used to confront contemporary social issues of the day, thinly veiled as sci fi morality plays. Racism, militarism, crime and punishment, historical myopia, the cold war arms race, sexism... Trek confronted them all. Now where are they? Brannon and Braga shot down every storyline with a gay character that crossed their desk. No guts any more, just another space opera to me.
@gigoer Mind you I only mention homosexuality as the most obvious and blatant example. There are others. The guys currently running The Franchise have no sense of moral conviction and no clue about the optimistic spirit that fans originally responded to in Trek. What, you think Trek dropped off the airways because no one likes SF any more? Firefly? BSG? Torchwood? An entire channel exists now for SF. It's more popular than ever. Trek just lost its way and forgot what made it great, that's all.
See this is my problem with TNG. Everybody has all their kids on board. I think it's a terrible idea to have your children anywhere near combat. The federation has become much too soft. I like the days of Captain Kirk or Captain Archer, where yes exploration was part of the mission, but clearly the idea of going into battle was a very real possibility.
@nfinn42 My thoughts on the matter is that with Sickbay being on Deck 12, and therefore in the lower half of the saucer, anywhere from Decks 10 to 16 would be most vulnerable when the Saucer impacts. That's the way I choose to see it
@nemesisprime6901 Ah, but they didn't yet realize they were going to crash land. That was an unintentional result of the shockwave from the exploding drive section giving them a shove into the atmosphere and knocking out the inertial dampeners and the impulse drives. Without the dampers, and trapped in atmo, mere docking thrusters alone couldn't fight off Veridian III's gravity, so down they went. None of that could have been foreseen by Crusher! Admit it, they goofed! :P
0:38 Lursa's weapons officer deserves to be throttled with targ tripe. Only one out of three at that range against a lumbering tub of a Galaxy-class? That Klingon can't hit the broad side of a barn!
Why didn't they just remodulate the shields? They do it all the time in the tv shows. It would have taken like 5 seconds and saved the ship. This is all so contrived!
I never understood this... Yea, shields down, but it's an OLD Bird of Prey against the Flagship of the Federation...Remember when they fought the borg and ALL 14 phaser banks were lighting up and they were launching torpedo spreads? A Galaxy Class starship should be able to take on a little Bird of Prey with the Galaxy's shields down and the BOP having shields. No contest.
@RichfromNH One thing you forget is where Enterprise was first hit. She was hit almost on her deflector dish. That type of hit would cause power surges through out the ship.
Not the video, the video's great, thanks for uploading it! But the death of the E-D was weak. It should have gone down suplexing a Borg Cube or something.
@nosorab3 oh damn right, throughout the series, the supposed "flagship" of the Federation, they're most advanced was beaten by a single ferengi or romulan ship after 3 shots... taking inteligence over power to win each time (not that there's anything wrong with being smart)
but you are right, the D being destroyed while taking out a fleet of Jem Hadar or something would of been a lot better
The scenes of the Enterprise going down were done really well, however this idea that an ancient Klingon ship could take out the Federation flag ship is a little silly.
@dvp84 they shouldve jsut made this a tv movie of the week instead of billing it as a movie I think it wouldve been more well recieved. But Berman (the manw ho was supposed ot bring balance to the force) turned to the darkside.
@andrewames247 HEY MAN , how do you think you get all that futuristic stuff to work, without explodium we wouldnt have holodecks, hover crafts, or comptuers that could handle trillions of gygabytes. Its a fair trade off man.
Anyone who thinks this fight is anything but a farce needs to actually go watch some of the episodes where The D fires it's weapons. This ship has fire power capable of putting CRATERS INTO BORG CUBES during the first encounter. It took on 3 klingon ships and managed to destroy one. Keep in mind, those klingon ships were also supposed to be more advanced and larger versions of the ship we see here. I'm fine with the D going down, but at least make her genuinely out numbered or overmatched.
Why does Riker asked worf what the weaknesses of the bird of prey is.Its a 100 year old Klingon ship you in a relativity new titan of a ship with 12 phaser arrays 3 torpedo launchers with 150 torpedo's you shouldn't need to know its weaknesses are.
@benrgrogan Useless time wasted. If all that time looking for weaknesses was spent adjusting their shield frequency and going head on the outcome would've probably been a lot better for the Enterprise.
Why not dropping shields and redirect all power to weapons. Fire all weapons at will and after 10 sec the bird of prey would have been ashes. That's how I would have done it ;-)
The entire series was worth it just for the culmination of Data swearing. Someone should edit Q in, riding the outside of the saucer down laughing. Preferably in his la cucaratcha outfit.
1: Couldn't the Klingons go into evasive manuvers so that the topedo would be delayed hitting them and they could cloak? if they were cloaked, the torpedo shouldn't have hit them.
2: Wouldn't changing shield frequences help stop the enemy fire from penetrating the shields?
3: Has anyone noticed when Riker takes command of the Enterprise, something bad happens?
Feel free to answer for your enjoyment. Or not. I dont care.
Yeah they should have though I guess one could argue that the core ejection system was damaged and that they could not eject it. However considering that the writers didn't add an extra line of dialogue or two to explain that makes me think the writers weren't aware that starships could eject the core.
@TheChosenOne337 As for question 3...it seems like when Deanna Troi is at the helm something bad happens. In "Nemesis" she "drove" the ship into Shizon's ship.
1) well when cloaked most of the ships power is diverted to the cloaking device, hence why the shields and weapons can't be used. When cloaked very little power is used by the engines so while it can still move I'm not sure if it would be able to evade the torpedo. Also, why wouldn't the torpedo be able to hit them while cloaked?
2) Yep, there really is no excuse for that plot hole
In the Best of Both Worlds, I believe the Enterprise rotated their shield frequencies in order to make it harder for the borg to adapt and they were also able to set their phasers to rapidly fire at random frequencies. My point is that changing frequencies can be done in a matter of seconds if not split seconds, so even if the shields did have to dropped it would only be for a moment. Besides, their current shields are useless so what does it matter if they drop them?
@NewWorldCorp You and every star trek fan in the world has wondered that for a long time. Also...why not eject the core? Why not go to warp to escape? Why not leave the nexus before the Enterprise exploded that way you could save your ship and warn yourself Soren was the big bad guy.
Oh oh here's one... why did Soren go through all this trouble to redirect the course of the Nexus when he could have just taken a shuttle craft and flown it right into the Nexus?
@zetatrain Because, as the start of the movie showed, flying any ship into the ribbon just destroys the ship and the occupants without getting anyone or anything into the Nexus. That's why you bring the anomaly to you, while you're at a planet, to have a chance at the Nexus.
True, but don't you think its strange that this ribbon will destroys ships but leaves organic material completely unharmed? The explanation the movie gives just raises more questions.
But even if we accept that it destroys ships but not flesh, I'd say it would still be easier to just get a shuttle, get into a space suit, and have the shuttle drop him off ahead of the Nexus and just wait a few minutes for the Nexus. Still would have been cheaper, quicker, and less complex.
soooooo why didn't Riker order worf to "Fire Phasers on full with a simultaneous spread of Photon Torpedoes" - Quote Taken from TNG Episode "The Survivors"
Hoho man, I used to love this scene as a kid, but now as an adult knows a thing or two about Trek? Man is this whole thing stupid. I probably should be yelling "change the damn shield frequencies" at the screen, but really the first thing that comes to mind is "fire all weapons, stupid!"
No, seriously. The flagship of the Federation should be able to EASILY crush one Bird of Prey, shields or no shields. Oh, and the insult to injury? It was an outdated and discontinued model... Wow, Enterprise.
@Xelpherpolis ...I was told, that at the death of Mr. Roddenbury, they lost the patent for that ship design and had to get rid of the Galaxy Class - so they wrote it into the script like this. I don't know if it's true...I agree with you though, that was pretty weak...
@arromac If that was true they would have gotten rid of it around the 3rd or 4th Season of TNG, as that's when Roddenbery died. From what I heard they felt it didn't look as nice on the Big Screen, and the crash was an idea they were playing with for a 2 part cliff hanger episode.
This is a great sequence, but really, don't you think that at some point Starfleet would have put seat belts on the bridge chairs? Maybe at the same time the finally they redesigned the consoles so that they don't blow up in the operator's face whenever the ship is hit by any weapon more powerful than a paintball gun?
How do they manufacture things in the future like the chairs, carpets, furniture, cloths? Do they use replicators? I guess that means people don't need to work.
It's never mentioned but you would assume in order to fire through own shields your weapon and shield frequencies have to match. When the Klingons matched their weapon frequency to the Enterprise's shields they would have had to also match their shield frequency to fire through their own shields. So when the Enterprise returned fire their weapons would equally had gone straight through the Klingons shields because Enterprise's weapon frequency would have matched the Klingons' shield frequency.
@illusion2012 I believe the expanded universe and the tech manuals say that the targeting computer quickly opens and closes holes in the shields to let their own weapons fire through. That's why you don't see the same effect of the shots passing through like you do as the Klingons shoot through the Enterprise's shields here.
@illusion2012 At the risk of totally geeking out here, I read in one of the Technical manuals that they have small sections of the shields that drop for a fraction of a second while firing through them, directly in front of the weapons. There are similar 'windows' that drop just long enough for the transporter to work while the shields are up.
@illusion2012 good point... would have been quite the "oh s**t" moment for the Duras sisters considering the Enterprise is the tougher and better armed ship :)
I always thought they should have made a lawnmower based on this scene. In addition ..who else would have Told will "You wanted a shot at this chair ...Here you go knock your lights out"
Damn Betazoid drivers... LOL.. But you have to give Troi props.. she did manage to land the Saucer Section and by the looks of it saved most if not all of the crew... Considering she'd just got her promotion to full Commander a few months previous...
I remember being at the movies and seeing this. I was flenched at the first two hits! I knew the writers would destroy her.

@TheChosenOne337
one more question:
4: Couldn't they just eject the warp core? It would save time to get way and the ship.
Like I said before, answer if you want. I dont care.
TheChosenOne337 2 weeks ago
@TheChosenOne337
Yeah they should have though I guess one could argue that the core ejection system was damaged and that they could not eject it. However considering that the writers didn't add an extra line of dialogue or two to explain that makes me think the writers weren't aware that starships could eject the core.
zetatrain 2 weeks ago
@TheChosenOne337 As for question 3...it seems like when Deanna Troi is at the helm something bad happens. In "Nemesis" she "drove" the ship into Shizon's ship.
OriginalRooster 2 weeks ago
@TheChosenOne337

NewWorldCorp 3 weeks ago 10
@NewWorldCorp Because it would make sense, so it would stick out of the rest of the movie.
c0p13dn4m3 3 weeks ago
@NewWorldCorp i think, in order to change shield modolation you need to deaktivate and reactivate shields, right?
so if they would have, they would have been destroyed much earlier.
superstreber24 2 weeks ago in playlist Favorite videos
@superstreber24 Not likely. Shields down or shields up it's still the same amount of damage if your disruptors go through shields.
linkingisnonsense 2 weeks ago
@superstreber24
Besides, their current shields are useless so what does it matter if they drop them?
zetatrain 2 weeks ago
@zetatrain ok, you're right.
superstreber24 2 weeks ago
@NewWorldCorp You and every star trek fan in the world has wondered that for a long time. Also...why not eject the core? Why not go to warp to escape? Why not leave the nexus before the Enterprise exploded that way you could save your ship and warn yourself Soren was the big bad guy.
linkingisnonsense 2 weeks ago
@linkingisnonsense
Oh oh here's one... why did Soren go through all this trouble to redirect the course of the Nexus when he could have just taken a shuttle craft and flown it right into the Nexus?
zetatrain 2 weeks ago
@zetatrain Because, as the start of the movie showed, flying any ship into the ribbon just destroys the ship and the occupants without getting anyone or anything into the Nexus. That's why you bring the anomaly to you, while you're at a planet, to have a chance at the Nexus.
RingSight91 2 weeks ago
@RingSight91

Xelpherpolis 3 weeks ago 2
@Xelpherpolis ...I was told, that at the death of Mr. Roddenbury, they lost the patent for that ship design and had to get rid of the Galaxy Class - so they wrote it into the script like this. I don't know if it's true...I agree with you though, that was pretty weak...
arromac 3 weeks ago
@arromac If that was true they would have gotten rid of it around the 3rd or 4th Season of TNG, as that's when Roddenbery died. From what I heard they felt it didn't look as nice on the Big Screen, and the crash was an idea they were playing with for a 2 part cliff hanger episode.

All the UFO's we've been seeing lately? Klingons must be having a field day.
StudioCPA 4 weeks ago
This is a great sequence, but really, don't you think that at some point Starfleet would have put seat belts on the bridge chairs? Maybe at the same time the finally they redesigned the consoles so that they don't blow up in the operator's face whenever the ship is hit by any weapon more powerful than a paintball gun?

How do they manufacture things in the future like the chairs, carpets, furniture, cloths? Do they use replicators? I guess that means people don't need to work.

When Data says "OOOOH SHIT!" you know its really bad....
irolus 1 month ago
It's never mentioned but you would assume in order to fire through own shields your weapon and shield frequencies have to match. When the Klingons matched their weapon frequency to the Enterprise's shields they would have had to also match their shield frequency to fire through their own shields. So when the Enterprise returned fire their weapons would equally had gone straight through the Klingons shields because Enterprise's weapon frequency would have matched the Klingons' shield frequency.
illusion2012 1 month ago 7
@illusion2012 I believe the expanded universe and the tech manuals say that the targeting computer quickly opens and closes holes in the shields to let their own weapons fire through. That's why you don't see the same effect of the shots passing through like you do as the Klingons shoot through the Enterprise's shields here.
AlhazredsGamingGoo 1 month ago
@illusion2012 At the risk of totally geeking out here, I read in one of the Technical manuals that they have small sections of the shields that drop for a fraction of a second while firing through them, directly in front of the weapons. There are similar 'windows' that drop just long enough for the transporter to work while the shields are up.
pinkdrink1 2 weeks ago
@illusion2012 good point... would have been quite the "oh s**t" moment for the Duras sisters considering the Enterprise is the tougher and better armed ship :)
