A nice analogy would be a forest fire. We gave everyone a tax rebate under Bush several times, and the impact is always the same. Most of it gets spent paying down debt, some of it gets saved, and only a small amount went to increasing consumption. What we want now is to redeploy idle capital and labor into productive enterprises rather than have it sit by doing nothing.
Obama is hardly giving the money to his "rich buddies" since most of this is aid to states and rebates, anyway.

The last thing this country needs is more compulsive consumerism. It's bad for the soul and for the earth.
We Americans have to scale back our frivolous lifestyle expectations. If we don't, then we're asking for more war and economic and environmental exploitation around the world.

Submariner, you're right. The American people should not have been spending so much money. If we'd let the recession come, that would force people to cut back on their spending, and start saving their money.
People need to stop looking at the recession as something evil that needs to be stopped, and start looking at it as something that will fix the mess we're in.
Of course, that requires the government, largely, to "get out of the way," which liberals don't like too much.

A nice analogy would be a forest fire. Throughout time, naturally occurring forest fires would eliminate the dead leaves and underbrush that the year had accumulated, thus creating the best stable ground for the forest to continue growing. Once people got involved, and put out every fire the second they saw it, the underbrush built, and that's why California (among other states) is a tinderbox right now.
