The only real future lies in large scale speedbox production: Switchgrass fuel pellets for power generation (coal replacement / augment, stored in piles on the ground: no storage tanks), and ethanol and 2-5-dimethylfuran (dimethohol) from strawberry mass for electric and hybrid fuel / electric cars. The 20:1 land use efficiency alone decides it, since land must be available for biofuel production without displacing food production.
I'm sure this is all very interesting. However, I can produce from 5.4 to 981 times as much fuel per acre, for 1/9th the cost.
He may have a Phd, but he is a noob. They got $400 million in grants and loans. If I had $4 million six years ago, 5 million Speedboxes would have been built in China, and gasoline would be 25 cents a gallon cheaper in the USA today because China would be importing less crude oil. Same situation in India and Japan. World demand vs. world supply = crude oil price.
Diesel engines were built with the intention on running on fuel from hemp.
