  • watch?v=ysNd4QGOgeY

  • Wow... at least in this one they actually show 1 ghost flickering

  • It did not sound like in the arcade.

  • Have to agree with the description, especially since the SFX were nothing like the arcade game or the commercial.

  • They made the mistake of showing gameplay footage.

  • They have 'Pac-Man Fever' playing in the background! Awesome! There is a hilarious reference to it in that short story "12 Things You Didn't Know About Tony Curtis"....so funny

  • The ghosts flickering doesn't seem like as much of a problem as YouTube makes it seem. What bothers me is this port's sound.

  • 1 stick to move them all!!! Oh and 1 button to start it up...

  • Using the sound effects from the arcade version should've been treated as false advertising.

  • worst

    port

    ever

  • Pacman,I COMMAND U 2 EAT ALL OF DA CARTRIDGES OF DIS GAME

  • Buckner and Garcia must be turning over in their grave right about now.

  • This is one of the worst pieces of crap ever made! Maybe other than Donkey Kong for the 2600, that was terrible!

  • They knew this was bad! (caused the video game crash of 1983)

  • Absolutely Brilliant!

  • 0:28 "Pacman by Atari" would u really want 2 put ur name on this?

  • what made this a total failure compared to the arcade version?

  • @MrSupermaniac123

Flickering sprites, poor gameplay, poor sound and lacking almost all of the polish of the arcade.

  • When i first saw this i was like LOL, it has lines instead of dots! That looks like shit!

  • very annoying, the ghost keep blinking over and over again. That messes with your mind when trying to play the game without dieing

  • Wow, they even showed the ghost flickering in the commercial.

  • I'd rather play the pro 200.

  • ugh....that has to be the MOST misleding commercial of all time, along with the ET commercials.

  • This is what greed will do to a company...makes them sloppy producers of garbage.

  • thats mega false advertising, the music was from the actual arcade game!

  • Such false advertising. They make it look like a great port, when really it's one of the worst ports ever known to mankind.

Also, what is with that design of Pac-Man on this commercial? He looks so freakish. But hey, at least it's a better design than the one he has now (in Pac-Man Party for the Wii).

  • just ceep in mind its the "SUCKBALLZ" Virsion BUY IT NOW!

  • The 8-bit computer versions of Pac Man for the Commodore 64 and Atari 800 look, sound, and play better than the 2600 version.

They even look and sound close to the arcade.

  • @Dakkiller1 Well, "Duh", (no offense). That is because they are vastly more powerful machines. Especially the C64, which was even more powerful than the Atari 400/800. Also, the Atari 2600 was more a 1.5 than 2nd nd generation gaming console, that was competing in a 3rd generation world (& for years, not just holding their own, but "winning" in sales/market share). It's kind of like PS1, vs a PS2 or 3, Xbox, Wii, etc. That the 2600 was able to hold on/compete as long as it did, is amazing.

  • What a scam...using the arcade sound effects and music, when the actual game sounded terrible. Worst official arcade conversion EVER!

  • Even the dog knows the game sucks....

  • Can't even show two seconds of gameplay footage without that ghost glitching like crazy

  • this game SUCKED compared to the arcade version

  • How was THIS and E.T responsible? Pac-Man on Atari may not have the same sounds and maze as the arcade game, but at least the game's still good...

  • This is misleading. They used the sound effects from the arcade version, when those of the Atari version go "donk donk donk!"

  • False advertising!

  • the graphics were terrible, but the gameplay was good, very close to the arcade version

  • Thanks I would rather be dead than play that piece of shit conversion.

Ms Pacman was a much better conversion.

  • happy 30 years birthday pac-man!

  • I think this commercial is false advertising, because they dubbed all the sound effects. Boo!

  • Guess what kids this game wont have any of the sound effects that are in this commercial and is completely lame

but it will make you go crazy, not with pacman fever but with the sudden realization you just spent two months worth of allowance on this crap

  • I don't remember the tunnels being on the top and bottom of the screen, but I guess they were.

  • The Atari 2600 version sucked. It wasn't until the NES that a good home version came out.

  • It didn't suck, it just wasn't the same as the arcade version.

We used to have big tournaments in my friend's neighborhood. It was pretty fun.

    Fun≠Suck

  • OMG!!! I used to play that..I felt cheated.. it wasn't anywhere near the real thing.

  • Come on, it wasn't that bad. They had a lot worse games than this. I remeber "Pele's soccer", were Pele was a brown rectangle. Quit different from the cover.

  • I like the animation

  • wow, this commercial made the game look good. never played i myself, but i can tell it's shit.

  • I want the version thats in the commercial not the abomination I was given.

*flash back to cheap deaths by flashing ghosts*

  • i think i got atari pacman fever when i played after tempture 104.4 really

  • Drop Atari Pac Man into your Atari video computer system, and be extremely disappointed and annoyed by this lame ass excuse for a game!

  • the pac man for atari ad is a lie! >:O

  • If you think this AD is misleading, because it obviously is with Atari trying to sell a GODAWFUL port. Then you should check out the Atari 5200 commercial showing footage of this game and claiming it to be on ColecoVision!!

  • The 5200 commercial showing 2600 Pac-Man as "running on the Colecovision" is an excellent case of spin doctoring, but not a lie, since the only version of Pac-Man one could play on the Colecovision *was* the 2600 version.

  • That still doesn't excuse how crappy and shoddy thier 2600 port is.

  • Of course not, esp. if you take Ms. Pac-Man on the same platform for comparison. Dennis Debro even programmed a 4K version that is way better (yet still flickers more than Ms. Pac-Man - apparently the advanced sprite multiplexing routines in Ms-Pac-Man take too much ROM space).

  • Comment removed

  • this commercial was nothing but lies

  • the people arnt happy! (they are the best actors in the WORLD!)

  • I hear this game cures pacman fever.

  • haha terrible

  • where the hell did you find this old commerical that is so cool! Thanks for posting!

  • i don't go for putting my generation down just to look cool for this spoiled snot nosed generation. it was new and it was fun. and the memories can't be tainted by the sarcasm filled to the brim in this generation.

  • this is true.. It actually wasn;t that bad you know.. Most people like me hadn;t played pacman before... this generation hasn't a clue and most of you never played this game

  • 0:22 what the crap is wrong with that ghost?

  • what kind of accent dose the announcer have?

  • what gets me is the sound effects they used in the commercial were from the arcade version. the atari version sound was shitty. but like the other guy said - we still ate that shit up all day and night!

  • Atari Pac-Man was horrible. It was a rush job, and the results were laughable, but we played it for hours on end anyway. I don't think we realized just how bad it was until years later.

  • Looks like the whole family playin Pac-man on atari 2600 got really exited. Just false...hehe just to get poor players attention to buy it back on that time

  • They musta gotten strongarmed into playing such a sucky video game and enjoying it. That clearly is unethical behavior.

  • This and E.T. The Video Game are credited for

causing the "Video Game Crash" of 1983, which

ended the Atari empire, and saw the rise of

    Nintendo.

  • another debatable factor in the game crash was that there were too many third party companies who were distributing too many games which were similar to other games.

  • @figment1988 Not exactly unlike the Wii's excessive amount of shovelware.

  • @figment1988 similar, AND, total pieces of overpriced crap.

  • @figment1988 Not to mention the adaptors companies were making to play Atari 2600 games. If a company were to do that now, there would be lawsuits, fan-base loss, and an extremely large amount of expenses which would have to go out to pay for such an idea. This sort of action would doom acompany right from the start.

  • Donkey Kong arcade and console games caused the rise of Nintendo, but when the NES was brought to the US in 1985, it could'nt be stopped. Atari 2600 was still making games and remained in the competition(beating Intellivision, Coleco Vision, and Atari 5200) until the late 1980's. When Atari 2600 and Sega Master System was failing in the late 1980's, NES started to make shitty games by a handful of third party companies (like Mindscape and LJN) and was still the best system.

  • @vigo894 The crash started in July '83 but was finalized in 1984 when Atari was sold off by Warner Comunications.

  • That's false advertising... they made it look fun...

  • indeed, they even thought that with Pac-Man Fever (which is a good song), this game would be a success, but it was panned

  • Honesty FAIL on Atari's part. BIG TIME.

Apparently, Atari stressed the importance of COLOR VIDEO GAMES back in the Video Computer System's/2600's day, and also had to rush many games, including this game and E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.

This commercial should be a candidate for FAIL Blog, and be titled "Atari Advert Honesty FAIL", which should contain the commercial followed by actual video and sound from the VCS/2600 game.

Why my mom owns this crappy version of Pac-Man, I dunno... :/

  • @whammy850 Yet this commercial is so bad that you can see the game glitch.

  • @whammy850 AND they didn't use the sound effects from the Atari version (probably because they were so pitiful.)

  • They used images of the crappy 2600 version with the original Namco effects.. WTF?

  • After hearing about how bad the Atari 2600 version of Pac-Man is, I decided to try it on a emulator. It's stinks, Which is a shame since it could of been a great port. Still, At least Activision released the brilliant 'Freeway', Which is better in every possible way.

  • good point, pac-man had an opportunity if it wasn't for the rushed time limit atari had (same thing with E.T.)

  • It was the horrible sound effects and the bad color scheme that made this game horrible. My older sister got this game in the eraly 1980s (a year or 2 before I was born), along with the horrible ET. When games are rushed to be released, they turn out to be very sloppy (this commercial is false advertising).

  • speaking of the sound effects, they also became a cliche when it the sound effects for Pac-Man (and donkey kong sometimes) were used in countless tv shows

  • WARNING: DO NOT READ IF YOU'RE UNDER 18!!

They copied the same Pac-Man Atari sound effects for two Atari porno games, Philly Flasher and Beat Em and Eat Em!! Talk about two very nasty and lame video games!!

  • i think i heard the AVGN mentioned that when he covered Atari's porno games.

  • He did.

  • loads of games use those sounds because they can't think of their own. I think i saw philly fasher being played by my cousin (is that the one with the knight having anal?) but i just thought it was a knight with a sword then he stabs a monster or something

  • Yeah, really -- what was the point of adult games on a 2600 anyway? Everything just looked like identical blobs of crap, whether it was a spaceship or a naked lady.

  • That was when outside developers could make any game for Atari 2600 and Atari could'nt do anything about it. If that happened today there would be "lawsuits up the ass."

  • I am surprised that no one mentioned the sneaky Atari advertising division, which used sound effects from the arcade version for this commercial that were not in the home version.

  • I heard of those two thanks to the Angry Video Game Nerd. To quote The Nerd, "You GOTTA be completely accurate for [the junk] to land in their mouths, and it uses the sound effects from [the VCS version of] Pac-Man."

  • @Azone01 Im only 13!

And I even saw gameplay footages of those games!

  • what the fuk that was shit

  • i know, that pac man neither looks like the pac man from the Hanna Barbera cartoon series, nor the pac man as depicted by Namco (the pac man with the pie eyes)
