scott hamilton or other commentators only says what they saw in their own opinion/comments on that certain skater. and i don't think he has favors at all...i mean he also praises mao. maybe he just amazed of yuna's skating than the other. well, same here i'm amazed by her! i won't be a figure skating fan without her!
I've never gotten why NBC (Scott Hamilton for the most part) has insisted on portraying Yu-Na as an incredibly consistent skater who never falls or makes a mistake. Up to this point in her career, I don't think there was a single competition I have seen where she hasn't made some sort of blemish in either the short or the long. Someone do correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's the case. The only competition she has done cleanly (which blows my mind) was at the Olympics.
@CrimsonVibrato Nah.. there were some other clean programs. For SP, there's 2007 WC where she set a world record and for LP there's 2007 Cup of Russia where she again set a world record for LP score. I believe there were other cases where she's done clean programs. The reason many commentors mention Yuna's consistency is not because she doesn't make mistakes but because she makes less mistakes than other skaters. So yep, in the skating world, she is considered a very consistent skater :)
@myii89 No, I meant a WHOLE clean competition. I don't recall her ever having one other than at the Olympics. That by no means defines a consistent skater. Yukari Nakano was a consistent skater, Rachael Flatt is a consistent skater, Yu-Na Kim is an unbelievable technician which I understand is why certain commentators go crazy about her, but I don't understand why some (Scott comes to mind) portray her as consistent. That she is not.
@CrimsonVibrato For someone who obviously "dislike" Yuna Kim sure knows a lot about her....dude who cares!...who gives a shit what you and the rest think....the core truth is that you have an opinion, I have an opinion, the world has an opinion and as my grandfather says to me even to this day "opinions are like assholes, we ALL HAVE THEM and THEY STINK" ...and your ranting is like my girlfriend bitching when she's on her period. God your annoying! Why are you even watching this?
@KEBokeh Yeah, 'cause what I'm saying is a fact (not an opinion) it means I hate Yu-Na. Give me a break and grow up the hell up. You can go take your little grandfather's advice and stick it up your ass, I don't want to hear it. I like Yu-Na Kim for your information, but it is true that Scott Hamilton gives her too much credit for "strengths" in her skating that she does not have: in this case her consistency. Don't like what I have to say? Then by all means don't read my comments and fuck off.
@CrimsonVibrato God your really are a whining little bitch....who gives a shit what you think. You may see it as a "fact" but really it's just your "opinion"...and I don't give a flying fuck about your opinion....and one last thing, Scott Hamilton can say whatever the fuck he wants, he can praise Yuna til his face turns blue...he has his right to express and have an opinion about how he feels her skating is so great. The difference is YOU have to be right, Scott doesn't. Your a moron. Bye now!
@KEBokeh Who gives a shit what I think? Obviously you do pumpkin or else you wouldn't waste your time responding to me, ass wipe. It's obviously a fact if she at least falls or pops a jumps in almost every single competition she enters except for that one Olympics, idiot. Just like Scott has the right to express his opinion, so do I, and I think he over praises her on strengths she obviously lacks. Go bother someone else you troll, you ain't changing my opinion. Capiche? Capiche. Bye now!
"Consistency" is an abstract term and a skater can seem consistent or inconsistent depending on a person's own meaning of consistency.. Yep! I also think that Yukari Nakano and Rachael Flatt are very consistent skaters! So Scott Hamilton must have a very loose view on "consistency" if he considers Yuna very consistent. You, CrimsonVibrato, have a strict view on "consistency". That's all there's to it! No reason to fight :D
@myii89 Yes, there is no reason to fight, I apologize. ;) But this young man who worships the floor Yu-Na walks on can't take a different perspective that may make out Yu-Na as the not so flawed skater (certain) people imply she is. All I'm saying is that by Scott's standards in the past and by what I have seen experts consider inconsistency in general, Yu-Na definitely fits the category. It just surprises me how Scott can act like Kim can do no wrong.
@CrimsonVibrato YOU have every right to say scott is "over praising" her & he has every right too that's all I'm saying but you keep insisting that what HE has to say is WRONG? You are entitled to your "opinion" and so does HE. Now if your concerned about how people will take HIS opinion, well, you have NO control over that. The fact is you can't handle the fact there are people who constantly say GOOD things about her. I think you personally like to hear bad things about Yuna.
@KEBokeh What he is saying IS wrong, not just by my standards, but in HIS standards as well. If it were any other skater Scott would have said that her biggest weakness is her consistency seeing how at this point in her career she had yet to skate a CLEAN competition. Instead he chooses to say that Yu-Na has NO weaknesses CONSTANTLY. Yes, there are a lot of great things to say about her, but YES it is wrong to say she has no weaknesses and to imply that she is consistent when CLEARLY she is not.
@CrimsonVibrato First of all you are going by his comments soley from this video. He actually has stated in other competitions that her biggest weaknesses are her inability to shake off her anxiety before competitions, her lack of flexibility, and her flip. I feel that it's been a while since the fig skating world has been blessed with a skater who is able to bring spark back to this sport and I feel IMO Scott is overwhelme greatly by Yuna's skating, hence his over the top "praises" for her.
@KEBokeh No, I am not going by the statements in this video alone. He has stated various times in different competitions how she lacks any weakness. There was one in particular where he checked off all the elements after making that statement saying, she has the jumps? Check. Spiral sequence? Check. Footwork? Check. Spins? Check. And NBC in general mentions time and time again how consistent she is, which is a ridiculous statement. Again, there is much to praise about Yu-Na's skating (cont)
@KEBokeh But it's not right that Scott drools over things Yu-Na does when there are skaters out there that do certain things better and he doesn't even mention it. I'd think Scott would be more professional than that. It's not wrong to like one skater better than other skaters, but when you're a commentator, i'd think you would know better than to not make it so obvious.
@KEBokeh Every freaking skater has a weakness one way or another, you have to be plain stupid to think that Yu-Na doesn't. I know Scott isn't stupid so what he continues to display constantly in his comments is his bias towards Yu-Na. I don't give a flying fuck if you think I hate Yu-Na because I mention an obvious flaw she has (grow up), but insisting a skater has a strength she proves in competition she lacks or insisting that a skater has no weakness is WRONG, PERIOD.
@KEBokeh And no, I am not concerned the way people take Scott's comments seeing how he is constantly criticized for his comments on Yu-Na's skating. ;-)
Scott was a fantastic skater, but as a commentator it's no secret that he gets on people's freaking nerves. Capiche, troll?
@CrimsonVibrato Hahaha...troll...good one. I believe those who criticize him are either anti Yuna or pro Mao...but anyway, Scott WAS a fantastic skater and he doesn't get on my nerves....anti's and people who easily get annoyed by others...now that's pathetic...there are bigger things to worry about...don't you agree? ; )
@KEBokeh Well then you are one of the minority, troll. Because I have seen more than plenty of people who are fed up with Scott's commentary.
Now...weren't you saying just a day ago how an ANNOYING little bitch I was? How annoying I was just because I mentioned one little negative about the skater you worship? I just LOVE hypocrites, don't you agree? ;-)
@CrimsonVibrato Hahaha wtf...skater worshiper? No I like Yuna, I like Mao, I like Rachael, I like them all....I even like whining bitches like you! Hypocrite...okay I'll give you that one...but then I don't think your miss/misses perfect are you?
@KEBokeh Thank you, you like whining bitches like me, I like hypocritical ass wipes like you, we're even. And yes hon, for someone who goes off like that on a person who makes on little negative comment on a skater is telling me you worship the floor she/ he walks on, in this case, Yu-Na. I doubt you would have done the same had I said...Rachael lacks good posture or stretch, now would you have? ;-)
I honestly don't get a genuine feeling of expression and beauty like I would get from a Michelle Kwan program or a Sasha Cohen program, or late Irina Slutksaya or early Mao Asada program...she just seems to be connecting the dots with difficult moves with almost no regard to the music. I mean this is a dance of death, and she's smiling....I would really like to see her work on her spirals and stretches more...she could do so much more with artistry.
@dementieva12 Can't disagree w/ you more. Even through some of Michelle Kwan's rather "depressing" performances, she still smiles or laughs out of relief after her major jumps... You should really just watch what you're saying :)
@DrBandgeek156 Here's the thing...that's one thing. I see Yu Na smiling at random points in the program, not always after difficult passages either. And she really doesn't do it for me. Her artistic expression leaves a lot to be desired. I just see a really good technician out there.
@dementieva12 I don't quite understand how you're even seeing her smiling throughout. The only major part through her program that I see her smiling was during her spiral sequence. Nowhere else was there any of the smiling that you saw.
@DrBandgeek156 The opening, it appears to be a smile. But regardless, I don't get any genuine feelings from her. It's just connect the dots in a complicated fashion, which is effective under the current point system.
@dementieva12 Aside from your highly subjective (and even groundless, I, like many other specialists and commentators, would say) critique of the lack of genuine feelings in Kim's performance, your observations seem to be based upon the assumption that since this musical piece is "Danse Macabre," Kim's smiles are not appropriate as a way to portray death.
@dementieva12 (continued from below) You've got every right to think as you please (although I don't consider such an argument feasible or critically informed).Yet it might be grist to your mill to think about artistic freedom or to read Henri Cazalis' (unabridged) poem this musical piece is based on. I think Kim is at times superbly depicting "long-lost delights" in this now legendary program.
@tristan5696 a) figure skating is a subjective sport....the whole judging system is based off of opinion on who skates better, and was even more subjective in the past. b) you can reflect upon long lost love and still be serious...the musical character of the piece is very serious despite being a dance. c) I'm not questioning her artistic freedom, to me (as a subjective watcher of a subjective sport) it doesn't sit well. d) What I see in her is a technical master class but otherwise fairly cold.
@dementieva12 I agree that figure skating is a subjective field; and yet, as is the case in literary or artistic interpretation, it does not mean that every opinion (or "doxa" one feels tempted to call it) goes. Ultimately, however, I believe you could express here whatever you think of Kim's performance, no matter what critical acclaim she receives from professional commentators and other figure skaters.
@dementieva12 But inasmuch as you want to relish such freedom to express your subjective interpretations, wouldn't it be fair for you to consider also the possibility that Saint-Saens' "very serious" music may be interpreted differently by other people who have their own "subjective" views of the music? With all due respect, I don't quite see why you, while insisting so strongly on subjective aspects in figure skating and interpretation, seem to think this music cannot but be serious.
@tristan5696 I don't mind that there are other interpretations, but having played the music before, I'm obviously going to be biased to my orchestra's opinion of the piece. And I don't mind that Yu-Na has formulated her own opinion. It just doesn't do it for me, as like I said before, she comes across (to me) as a technical master with a fairly cold and shallow expression. That's just how it will be to me, and you and everyone else see it differently. Case closed.
