honestly, I didn't think this movie was portraying the whole of the noble Nigerian people. It only showed a small group of gangsters and yea it did take a stab at Obedsjando (sp?) but wasn't about the country's people as a whole.
I have a lot of respect for Nigerian people, they have a great community feeling and faith. Anyone who has gone to Nigeria will know this. In that sense, there is a lot of commonality with Americans, in religious faith and entrepreneurship.

I saw District 9 and I loved it myself. Although I can see how if you're Nigerian you might not like it.
Me I don't have any beef with Nigerians (beyond the ones that send me spam, those I don't like.) And I don't think the Nigerian crime ring is an example of typical Nigerians, it's a crime ring. It's no more typical of Nigerians then the Sicilian Maffia is typical of Italians.
As for the voodoo stuff. Well fact is, in some places in Africa, you hear that for example people with albinism are killed and cut up for magic potions. There are people who do stuff like that.

Most south african cities have a large nigerian presence. Unfortunately in a lot of places they are involved in drugs, prostitution etc. Im sure not all are involved in this but south africans have a generally negative view of nigerians, even more so than their views of other africans.
There weren't any humans portrayed positively in this movie. Nigerians happened to be included.
And the movie never stated all Nigerians are bad. There are Nigerian gangs, are there not? This movie just showed a gang in it. And again, it's not like whites were portrayed any better.

I have a lot of respect for Nigerian people, they have a great community feeling and faith. Anyone who has gone to Nigeria will know this. In that sense, there is a lot of commonality with Americans, in religious faith and entrepreneurship.
But please don't start making a Nigerian American lobby group, people generally have a very positive impression of Nigerian immigrants. They're seen as wanting to embrace America.

I saw District 9 and I loved it myself. Although I can see how if you're Nigerian you might not like it.
Me I don't have any beef with Nigerians (beyond the ones that send me spam, those I don't like.) And I don't think the Nigerian crime ring is an example of typical Nigerians, it's a crime ring. It's no more typical of Nigerians then the Sicilian Maffia is typical of Italians.

I don't really remember if the movie made the distinction that the "Nigerians" were just members of gangs or not. If they didn't, they should apologize. It sends an extremely ignorant message about a part of the world that we in the developing nations don't hear about often enough to know better.

I don't think Nigerians will get much support in their fight to get an apology from the movie's producers. Even fellow Africans won't support them, due to their frustration with them. The whole world is frustrated with the way Nigerians handle others. But the movie went too far. But then again, Arabs have faced the same in many movies.

I think you are very wrong. There has been criticism from all over Africa, US/UK and surprisingly from Asia. There have been facebook pages condemning the portrayal. The BBC and major international news network have carried the news and have repeatedly conveyed Africans' frustrations with Hollywood's continuous negative portrayals. If you don't like anyone from Nigeria then that is you not Africans. The people here in trouble with this false portrayal is Sony. They have a lot to loose.

Most south african cities have a large nigerian presence. Unfortunately in a lot of places they are involved in drugs, prostitution etc. Im sure not all are involved in this but south africans have a generally negative view of nigerians, even more so than their views of other africans.

And the movie never stated all Nigerians are bad. There are Nigerian gangs, are there not? This movie just showed a gang in it. And again, it's not like whites were portrayed any better.
