I can't wait for critics to grab a guitar and put as much effort into playing as they do into poorly grabbing for reasons to say someone of this caliber is a "pale imitation".
@Ethonadon10 mayer haters are usually close minded people who does not accept a "pop" guy as one of the best guitarrist of this generation. people judge him by his sense of humor and just by listening "your body is a wonderland". john's so called "pop" tunes, are great. you just can't listen to "victoria", "quiet", "neon", "edge of desire", and other dozens of his songs, and just label them as "shitty pop".
well IMO, if John Mayer wasn't an extraterrestrial on the guitar, he wouldn't be on any stage with the men who invented the blues. You all remember them? BB King, Buddy Guy? guareentee if Robert Johnson himself was still alive, he'd probably sell his soul to Mr. Mayer instead of satan. So my words for all the John Mayer haters who criticize for "ripping" things from Hendrix and Stevie Ray, until your on stage and perform with guitar legends, like john mayer, please just shut the fck up..thanks
@20acm10 I don't think YouTube would be very interesting if people just "shut the fuck up", especially on someone else's say-so, lol. I've listened to a lot of Mayer's playing and lots of people must be hearing things that I don't. Jimi was a genuine innovator. Live and let live.
fucking pisses me off that billionaires like Paul Allen have to buy guitars like Jimi's white one to be put on their stupid fucking walls instead of having some decent guitarist handle it and continue to seed the love that Jimi's music brought to us.
Your right he was a douchebag at one point. I'm pretty sure now as a musician, he has realized that, and have really commited to his fans and most importantly himself being true to himself as a musician

I check out anyone doing Hendrix, as I dig the "real thing". There are some cats that can jam jimi very well, this dude isn't one of them. Just a sorry ass abomination of Jimi's music. Honestly, this guy couln't play his way out of a wet paper bag. Can I do better, ? Absolutlty. I'll release some material in the future.......This is the poorest Hendrix covers I've ever heard or seen. Then again he is a newbie to the scene.
oh, give me a break! mayer a newbie? i really want to see your stuff because i looked up your account and i saw no videos and i saw that you're 53. mayer is about 30, it's not like he has no time to improve his skills even more. so either you stop showing off or you bring some good material on which we can all agree that it's better than this. i'll look forward to hearing from you soon
this version is alot more complex not harder than jimi's he plays alot more and fills it out so he sings over the the fills alot better and makes it sound more full just my opinion i think alot of die hard jimi fans are just jealous that he makes a living outa doin this stuff these days and they aren't good enough to get were he is
Nobody thinks that you're a bigger Hendrix fan because you use language like "cats" and "dig". Before you start insulting people for emulating Hendrix, look at yourself. And just talking like Hendrix doesn't make you any more music savy.
That was an awesome performance. He paid homage two both Jimi and SRV with this song. It seems to me that he like Jimi's songwriting and SRV's soloing. I love the fact that he is introducing Hendrix to a brand new audience. I want him to continue to bring great soulful guitar playing back.
And the version on the John Mayer Trio CD has one of the most awesome solos i've heard, i reckon it eclipses Hendrix's version. Dont get me wrong, im a mad Hendrix fan and he did write the song, but man John can sure wring some sweet groovey blues out of that beautiful guitar.
Michaelpfranco and freebird hit the nail on the head.
I reckon he is fucking incredible, keeping it real and alive in amongst a rather bland and seedy world of popular music out there at the moment.
Oh and for the comment, "he looks at his guitar too much..."??? Hmmm well look at the kind of intricate chords voicings and licks he's doing as he's singing, id like to see you not looking at your guitar whilst doing that!
its super hard 2 improvise off chords like Jimi & sing a different melody at the same time. JM sounds more like the Doobie Bros during the chords & more like SRV during the solo than himself or Jimi. he needs to find himself . he can play but he has been choked by his influences. I dont hear a new thing. Where & who is J Mayer? He plays it safe by playing whats already been played. Hes got no guts no balls.
imo. u know what they say about opinions: they r like assholes, we all have 1
he is playing a jimi song, so why go too far outside the box?!? meaning he's fine recreating this great song at any rate. he's a excellent player in my book and would like to see anyone who's bagging him to post their own version and see how it compares. we all know how hard it is to sing and play JH stuff to begin with. And if you ever like to see the real JM stuff just check out his originals. I think he's great for what he does.
JM was marketed 2 teenage girls. he wanted to get past that. At least SRV crystallized some Texas blues sound, tho I find Billy Gibbons to be way more original & stylistic. imo SRV was a copycat artist supreme but never got much past his influences.
Mayer pays tribute to JH by playing this song. give him credit for covering a song that few dare to cover ;
Yeah, but you have to bury yourself in the limited amount of records that both jimi and srv have because, obviously they can't make music anymore. So this pale imitiation of a pale imitation (which I can't believe you called Stevie) is the only popular living link to these tunes.
If you had any musical background you would know that there are no 'pale imitations.' What you are referring to is influences. Jimi was innovative, but his innovation was derived from the blues greats like B.B. King, Albert King, etc. Does that make Jimi a 'pale imitation' of a blues guitarist? Hell no, he's one of the greats. And so is John Mayer. Like every guitarist, he admits he wants to play like Jimi. So next time you go bashing the greats, figure out what the hell you're talking about.
last time i checked, jimi's rythem parts for this song weren't nearly as tough as to pull off as the ones that john has come up with. i mean, the verse parts are fairly similar, but the chorus parts that john plays is WAY tougher than jimi's, not to mention very well harmonized and all that shit.
on top of that, he's singing at the same time, which is something that jimi didn't do with this song except once or twice, and the only recorded live version of this song that i've heard is from the BBC sessions, in which Jimi UBER-simplifies his parts when he sings
as you probably noticed, i know a thing or two about what i'm talking about, and jimi is my first and foremost hero. but its fuckers like you that rip on anybody that tries to cover a great song by jimi that need to realize that its people like JM and a few others that are keeping Jimi relevant to todays youth.
He's keeping it alive, and instead of ripping on john, who does not deny being "defined by his failure to become jimi hendrix", why don't you embrace the fact that this young man has made a serious musical statement in todays sugar coated, superficial bullshit music industry, bringing back music with substance.
