Why do elephants love rubbing stuff on themselves? Here it's sand, but in the jungle its mud and when they are put in a snowy environment they do the same exact thing with snow.

I love these creatures.

A few months ago I was listening to a gun show on the radio and this lady who was pals with the show's host said (among other things), "I gotta shoot me an elephant!"

It made me sick to hear her say that, and especially with such joy in her voice.

Ahh sometimes I wish this (seriously dreadful) bird flu would kick in and wipeout most of the rotten human herd.:-(

Are you a professional who really knows or are speculating? To me it appears to be using the sand to "scratch" it's truck, or cool off, intentionally rolling not having an involuntary diabetic attack. It would roll in mud if that was available, just as pigs do, to protect its sensitive skin from the suns intense heat. They aren't too coordinated due to obvious size so it just looks funny!
