  • I don't understand the whole old-Hockenheim nostalgia. I appreciate that it is historic and quite a unique layout in f1 terms, but that isn't necessarily good. It is essentially just 4 long straights joined up by one-car-at-a-time chicanes. This video is perfect evidence: It's a series of drag races where the car which is obviously faster struggles to overtake. The best part is watching the cars struggle through the stadium section with minimal downforce.

  • Just bring back the old Hockenheim....

  • killing F1 started with changing hockenheim..

  • Great stuff, but what a shame they used that fisheye camera. Makes it look like the Jordan is miles away.

  • The new Hockenheim is shit!!!

  • What I want to formula one is:

    800 to 900hp 1.6 turbo Engine

Wing size like the ones till 2009 (rear wing larger and front wing shorter)

    Huge rear tires

    More freedom on position defence

    Wing cars

No drs but they could still have kers

I would be happy with only that changes! <3

  • Put Bernie in the jail for 30 days just to looks this video for continous repeat... Good rule changes coming up for 2013? :D

  • Why did they change Hockenheim?

  • 222 MPH without the stupid DRS or KERS and the sound of a 3.0 Liter Honda V10 this is what F1 cars should be

  • imagine this with drs and kers O_O

  • wenn man des so hört und sieht da haste gänsehaut des klingt nach formel 1 da gabs noch 2 kämpfe im mkittelfeld ohne drs und kers scheiß

  • lol @ 1:10

  • Bring back V10's and the old Hockenheim!

  • Miss the old V12's! such great sound!

  • Just imagine echo sound in the forests arround the track.

  • The nice old Hockenheim Ring!

  • at 1:13 he could have predicted he was way faster because he took the curve before so much better. no need for a shifting problem here : )

  • Fantastic video, thanks for uploading it. The old Hockenheim is just an incredible track, perfect for high speed wheel to wheel battles.

  • Zonta: 357 km/h without DRS and KERS!

  • @TheRailworldD443 the cars were faster and more powerful

  • @ivalo03 there was better than now.

  • @TheRailworldD443 but with alot less downforce and alot more HP ;)

  • @TheRailworldD443 bons tempos, bons tempos

  • @TheRailworldD443

Back then, the cars had much better engines. I just compared the 2011 cars to the 2004 cars (probably the fastest ever). It turned out Vettel's P1 lap time in Brazil would have put him on P14 back in 2004.

  • @R1S9S9R1 it is not about engine, F1 car is not about engine (maybe monza and old hockenheim). but these days it depends strongly on aero and it was reduced. in year 2005 later 2006 and finally in 2009.

  • @TheRailworldD443 but with a Honda 3 litre V10

  • wow the cars move around so much, great times

  • Just Real Formula One !!! Sounds Really Nice !!!

  • I love old Hockenheim...

  • Hockenheim before they ruined it :(

  • Compare this to battles like 'mansell vs Senna', 'Schumacher vs Hakinnen', 'Piquet vs Prost', you'll notice the huge difference between really really good drivers and really really really really good drivers!

  • Can't imagine how DRS would work here.....actually I don't want to imagine it....

  • V10 was mint!!!

  • Fuck Tilke, Fuck Bernie!

  • Hockenheim era el circuito mas rapido de la formula 1....Ahora los f1 son muy lentoss...estan destruyendo la f1. que vuelvan los motores v10

  • Why did they shorten the track... :l

  • panis's gear change so late

  • Wtf panis could have taken him easily at that last chicane, and at the first he had a shot too, wtf was that panis!

  • V10!!! :)

  • haha bad shifting at 1:12

  • @OMGGP En estos casos es que se ve la calidad del piloto,el manejo y dominio de sus manos sobre esas palancas de cambios... malo Panis..

  • Miss the V10.. Miss the true Hockenheim...

  • Thank God they got rid of traction control. Made the cars sound so shit

  • he would've passed him a long time ago but he keeps pulling out the slip stream too early

  • The should reopen this portion of the course, it would be awesome

  • @EldubeG25 Can't. At all. They put trees there so that the old part can never be used again....

  • @vietdude7 Fuuuuck :'( Why?? I'll stick to my old F1 World GP on N64

  • @vietdude7: Only chance: a sheik buys the track and rebuilds it :-)

  • 2014 is going to be a fiasco

  • Beutiful, a joy to watch and hear!!

  • 357.3kmh is just over 222mph

  • Just imagine if they had KERS and DRS.

They would be approaching speeds of 370 kph down the straights.

    Bring back the old.Hockenheim.

  • @satos1 Todays cars or cars back then? 2003-2005 cars probably would reach speeds close to that anyway, whilst todays cars are slower than most years barring 2009/2010 down the straights even with KERS and DRS... The reliability aimed 18k engines just dont have the grunt that they did as recently as 2008.

  • @satos1 DRS wouldnt make a huge difference. Downforce is already as low as it can be at the old hockenheim track. Kers probably wouldnt make a huge difference either. It doesnt even give 90hp which isnt much at those speeds.

  • N20 Nitro and Nos, they are all the same thing and its NO2 not N20

  • the sound is just.... briliant

  • mmm. . . i was expecting too watch an overtake

  • Derk

  • I think Panis brakes a little too early

  • old hocknehiem....what to say......

  • they need to outright remove blocking from F1, I love the track but if anyone got together on those straights it was lights out

  • gosh the safety back then waz bad, look 357kms/hr if there were a accident sum1 wuld end up in the trees wit a branch frew there head lol.

  • 1.32 Nicely held!!! Damn!!!

  • the most important thing is that grandstand is full!! good old times

  • See how much turbulent air ruins car handling, Panis cant even get close on corner exit....

  • this track with new rear wing system (Y)

  • panis has no idea how to overtake someone..

  • I guess he was in the Trulli train

  • 2001? Wow 10 years ago already. The vid looks like it's from the late 80's. Didn't know the speedo graphic was this bad in 2001 :)

  • this just shows how difficult f1 is

  • @MrBluntNose NO. it shows how difficult F1 USED to be till they introduced baby cars in 09

  • @gunit2771: 2006 you meant!

  • Honda engine in both cars?

  • 2001 There was my F1 Time still in order... now all the crappy F1 Tracks... want the good old time back.

  • V10 melody

  • I miss the sound of the v10.

  • @rolandgarroz

I agree with your opinion. Also, you know, F1 will introduce 4 cylinder engine in the future. I'm very dissapointed with the rule !!

  • he didn't escaped the trulli train xD

  • Chegar é uma coisa, passar é outra!

  • 1:12 shifting fail, without that he had orvertook him

  • Now THIS is what i call racing. Modern F1 got boring and most of the new Tracks are horrible. And 357 kph is amazing. The modern F1-Cars already have problems to reach 325+

  • Old Hockenheim like a circuit was much better, especially from point of TV viewer and for drivers too, however one lap took too long time and spectators on circuit hadn't so much action like on new one.

Believe my guys, I was in Hockenheim last year and it's a big difference when lap takes about 1.20 min (F1 )and about 1.45 min (Porshe super cup or old Hockenheim)

  • They killed this track..!!

  • trulli train 2001 version :D

  • Tilke and Bernie both destroyed F1. D:

  • @212809 Mhhh I do not agree with you 100%.

Tilke build some very beatiful tracks, like Abu Dhabi or Sepang.

Even the new Hockenheimring ist a very good track.

In my opinion it´s just Bernie, he just want to much money.

  • @212809 Funny thing ist, that Tilke destroyed a track that actually looked like the prototype of his very own design philosophy: long straights, braking chicane, long straight, braking chicane. This does perfect justice for modern f1 racing and overtaking. so sad it is no more...

i remember this being my favorite track in the old days, i was looking forward to it the whole year.

    R.I.P.

  • @mathee77 I think the same!!!

  • All i can say : Hermann Tilke, suck my dick!

  • agreed, the guy should be shot!

  • Why is Tilke designing all the new circuits. They are all long straights and hair pins then tight twisty sections. All the same. He's designing the new Indian track. There's no variety. The old tracks have more variety - Spa, Silverstone, Old Hockenheim, Monza, etc. They should atleast find another designer other than Tilke!

  • @maidenslayer Bernie chooses Tilke because he is cheap. Look at what Populous did to Silverstone, that is a great example of how to refurbish a circuit without ruining it!

  • @PieLighter: they came close to do so in my opinion, though.

  • god i miss that track 1 of the of all time

  • beautiful speed !! 357 km/h Zonta . LOVE!!

  • Die Formel 1... als sie noch spannend war... als Überholen noch möglich war! ... SCHADE, sehr schade, dass diese Zeit vorbei ist!

  • i bet that down shift at 1:13 didnt do the gearbox any good!

  • stunning circuit indeed!! But Spa Franchorchamps is THE most beautifull F1 circuit!!!!

  • :D just look at 1:33 , this is POWER steering =)

  • Today, you can see the old Hockenheimring's track covered with grass, shrubs and small trees. Everytime Formula 1 comes to the Hockenheimring I just get memories... mostly good memories too.

  • The faster track actually is Monza, 350 km/h max. , very sad knowing it was the last Grand Prix on the old Hockenheim, probably we'll never see again a F1 car at 357 km/h... unhappy :(

  • Now that's a racetrack with BALLS

  • The old Hockenheimring was much better than the new one!

  • V 10 engines XD

  • did he miss a gear at 1:12? or what happened?

  • @nickforthetitle it´s intentional for avoid a crash... or even worse: a wheels touch!

  • @nickforthetitle pretty sure he was trying to avoid an accident..

  • @nickforthetitle he nearly hit trulli, it was a emergency brake and downshift, it confused the gearbox

  • @nickforthetitle he downshifted to reduce speed a bit so as to avoid contact with that slow jerk

  • come on da boys in yellow

  • trulli train

  • I don´t think that Trulli is the best in the grid.

But he is certainly the "widest".

    Overtake Trulli is VERY difficult!!

  • Wow :-O old Hockenheimring it's amazing !!! Just like fast Monza :-D

  • f1 nowadays is giving people who have watched it for many years unfairliness.I would like f1 to go back to v10's but have the same power as they did around the time 2000/1. You're not going to believe this also. F1 may use le mans tires for next year.Rediculous. and with all these safety features they are going about a1 gp speed or slower. The point of f1 is to beat all the other open wheel series and be much x2 quicker

  • @thestonecoldandy Le Mams tyres for next year? We need tyres with high grip and low life span not the opposite. Otherwise all the races might turn out to be Bahrain 2010. All this so called overtaking measures arent really working. 08 had some good action, 09 i suppose did to some extent. But this year only has so far due to abnormal situations >_>

  • If anyone wants to know, I've uploaded the full 1992 Hockenheim race with Murray Walker and James Hunt. Just search * 1992 German GP Part 1 :)

  • Yummy, classic slipstream battle !

I blame Tilke for ruining this track =(

  • 357 km/h ZONTA!!! in 2010 you can't see a car going at 357km/h neither if got KERS N20 Nitro and NOS onboard!!!

  • @Alex2spades Oh it'll be very close to that at monza, don't worry

  • @Alex2spades its not like they've got slower. with the right setup, 2010 cars would go 360 as well

  • @bubi8894

And they'll be undriveable for any important period of time because of the lack of grip in medium and high speed corners.

  • @PulletSurprise monza??

  • @bubi8894

The 2010 cars topped out at 330-345 KM/h.

  • @PulletSurprise oh wow. wouldn't have thought that. well it's true then, they became slower

  • @Alex2spades And remember the Italian GP 2001 tha Jean Alesi Reach 361.3 Km/h in qualifing

  • @m598lmr Correction: 363.4 km/h

  • @Alex2spades because they made f1 engines strictly v8s,it was v10s here, but an even better video can be found of the 94 ferrari with a v12 or the 94 mclaren tryin out a lamborgini engine

  • @Alex2spades Indy Cars can

  • @Alex2spades Check that in 2005 Mark Webber did in Monza an incredible 372 km/h speed at the start-finish line. He did that with a v10 engine, of course.

  • @MrSzerdav can you tell me what session it was in i thought kimi set the fastest speed with 370km/h

  • @thestonecoldandy Honetly. I don't remember that one. Maybe in 2003.

  • @MrSzerdav It was 2001, when Trulli was at Jordan and Panis had joined BAR in 2001, and Tilke neutered Hockenheim in 2002....

  • @thestonecoldandy fueron 376km/h no recuero el año......

  • @thestonecoldandy: 370 was topped severeal times, I certainly remember Webber, Raikkönen, Montoya, Pizzonia, Schumacher, Barrichello doing it. IIRC fastest ever was Pizzonia during the testweek prior to the 2005 Italian GP.

  • @Alex2spades NONSENCE!!!!! it depends on the settings of the car..

  • @Alex2spades Imagine WITHOUT the chicanes!

  • @Alex2spades

    It's not far off though!?

  • @Alex2spades Exactly! Imagine what the Ferrari's etc could theoretically do on this track at this time. Nothing comes close to F1 in the early part of the 2000s for raw speed.

  • @Alex2spades because this hockenheim track doesnt exist ;)

  • @Alex2spades Because F1 now doesn't have tracks nearly as high speed as the old hockenheim. If we did now, the modern cars wouldn't be too far off.

  • @PJ2436 Monza is a very high speed track, and they reach very high speeds... Just put the lowest downforce settings on the car, and you got an incredible speed... Alex2spades is just a noob.

  • @nixxxon18 Hockenheim was an even faster track than Monza. You are already reaching about 150mph by turn 1, then it's an even longer run to the first braking point than from Parabolica to the first chicane at Monza. Monza is a very high speed track, but the Hockenheimring was simply faster.

  • @PJ2436: True, Hockenheim was faster on topspeed, but Monza was faster on average speed.

  • @PJ2436: No way, todays cars lack at least 150 horsepower compared to the 2004/2005 cars.

  • When was Zonta in this race? why does it show his name on the timing graphic?

  • he was replacing frentzen, after he was sacked at jordan. just this one race i think.

  • Of course, this must've been before they got Alesi from Prost! Thanks!

  • He was the stand in driver for Frentzen who was fired and had moved to Prost gp....The next race Jean Alesi moved over to Jordan

  • old Hockenheimring was one of the best F1 tracks ever! RIP

  • @THeBaNDiTa

I kinda like the new Hockenheim myself

  • @THeBaNDiTa It surely was , why the hell did they ever change it?

  • @stickypool It was cause most of the spectators didn't get to see most of the action and someone got past the security in the forest.
