Actually not. Mel Tormet did record the song but well after (like 10 yrs) Nat King Cole had it written for him. He had actually recorded it several times before Tormet did his, with permission of course as the rights belonged to Cole and his label.
No you're wrong "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)" is a classic Christmas song, written in 1944 by vocalist Mel Tormé and Bob Wells. The Nat King Cole Trio first recorded the song early in 1946. Go look it up.
I'm talking about who wrote the song - not who first recorded it. The rights to the songs didn't belong to Nat King Cole they belonged to Mel Tormé and Bob Wells - if they didn't sell the song to a record company or something - which is what a lot of song writers used to do back then.
My apologies. I had a history of the song that had "unknown" as who wrote it. I knew that Nat King Cole had the song written for him and he was the first to record it. I can see now that it is fairly well known that Torme at Wells wrote it. Torme did record it during the 1960's I believe. Thanks for clearing me up.
