In the comic books, the child was a boy and it was called "The boy who collected Spiderman" back in '85 or so. I think Ben Ulrich of the Daily Bugle wrote the article and Peter saw it and took the dying boy out on the town and revealed who he was. It was a tearjerker of an issue.
