The only alternative would be to build it in drydock which not all yards have the facility of.

@meringandan yepp, youre absolutly right. metal in saltwater=perfect match. its not nessesary to paint it under the water-line when its in the dock. because if you paint the keel in the wrong color it might get slower and more thirsty for fuel.

It creates more drag going backwards because they are less streamlined. If they launch forwards they would need many more counterweights/chains etc. to check it's momentum.
