  • Hi -- yes, it is the same one. We acquired the grinding machine and restored it to an earlier but not original condition. It is visible at the Hazy Center, but not in its normal position due to construction which will be finished by the end of the year.

  • There is a timber-frame Ritchey grinding machine at the Udvar-Hazy Center, near Washington's Dulles Airport. --Looks much like the one in this video.

  • I thought that Ritchey's grinding machine was made from heavy timber. Am I mistaken? Or has it been improved over the years?

  • You are right - the frame is made of timber but the moving parts and gears are of course made of various metals. The machine was indeed modified many times over the years - mainly electrical control upgrades.
