Mike Clark's drumming has stood the test of time as the funkiest, tightest, baddest shit ever taped! This is freakin 1974! and no one can touch his ass now or then with this track...sick. The whole band is ridiculous, herbie's solo killed me...but Mike Clark oh man!
@doubts Loads of great drummers yes but only one Mike Clark. There's nothing like this piece anywhere in the last 30 years. It's the best of Hancock's funk/jazz hybrid style, and it has a lot to do with Clark. I've read where Herbie talks about this piece and Clark together, in fact when I saw him last at Carnegie Hall he played it with Jack DeJohnette on drums. Totally different feel, I would have preferred Mike Clark's drums hands down.
@timages I read they were chanting for some time before they went into record. Definitely worked !! I do love his playing. I just love em all. Gadd would also have been good on this track i reckon.
@Drivethebeat I read that Mike and Paul Jackson were friends from Oakland who played together. In fact Paul suggested Mike to Herbie, and he came up with this piece jamming with Paul. He just sprang it on Herbie who loved it and that's how it happened. To me it's a killer combination of a great tight syncopated funk beat blended with these complex superbly controlled jazz fills actually the whole sound is about his masterly control of the drums. Mike Clark is a bad ass no doubt!
I know I'll be flamed for this, but over the years I've listened to Paul Jackson, it sounds to me like he has bad pocket and poor technique. Listen to Hang up you Hang ups, Actual Proof, Spank a Lee, Palm Grease and many others. Maybe my ears just aren't big enough, but he sounds like he just doesn't get the groove. Can anybody talk me down? He's funky but where's the pattern?
THRUST is one if not my most favorite album by Mr.Herbie Hancock. SPANKALEE is my favorite jam. Herbie is the "MEANEST". He'll take you places you've NEVER been before. The DRUMMER is the BOMB too. You can't forget PAUL JACKSON on bass. Herbie Hancock IS my favorite jazz artist of all time!

@thmsjordan Yeah man...I think the second best (or equal) funkiest rhythm section has to go to Tower Of Power... Francis Rocco Prestia on bass, and David Garibaldi on the kit...forget about it.
When I was in high school in '77,I would walk around with my 8 track player with this tune playing.I would wonder why radio music didn't sound like this. Why did most of it sound the same.I didn't realize that most of it was based on the I,IV,V blues progression.Predictable.But this wasn't.I kept playing it over and over.

Have a listen to a black American drummer named Billy Cobham ( CD title "Stratus" released approx 1973)......released the same year as Herbie Hancock "Headhunters"......more high powered Jazz/Funk
If I was alive in 1974 to hear this with adult ears I think my brain would have melted. It's impossible for me to comprehend how next level this shit was at the time but my guess is that it sounded inscrutable to some and unspeakably dope to others.
I was a nineteen year old submarine sailor and this was the third jazz recording I ever bought. Headhunters was what got me into jazz to begin with and I have been a fan ever since.

Wow wish i'd been there. HH is a modern composing genius. The rest of the band are equally unbelievable on this album, it's gemre-defining stuff, optimal performances all round.
@Happysundaze Everyone charged to the front at the end and Herbie ran the length of the stage high-fiving the fans. He shook my hand! It's made my alt-chord licks 10% better!! Next big date Wayne Shorter quartet with John Patitucci!!!
Look, what amazes me is that for the last twenty years, I thought that Return to Forever's Romantic Warrior was the first actual source of genuine "Fusion" music. I don't know why this has gone under my radar for the last, what, 30 years of recording, but this is more amazing.

"Thrust", baby!! The best album by Herbie Hancock ever made since "Head Hunters"! It's also one of my favorite albums of all time!! All of the songs are super tight, including this one!! Thank you!!!!
@RATMfan92 Oh, yeah! Can't forget about "Mr. Hands"! That album has my favorite cut called, "4am"! When I hear that, it takes me on a musical journey in my mind! I love it when I can feel every note and beat through me! Gets you right inside!! Now that's music, baby!!
GMONY5, I hear you! Thrust came out when I was in the 10th grade. I already had my world rocked by Harvey on the first album and what David was doing with TOP but then this!!! I spent months just entranced by the album. I still have the poor old worn out vinyl.
WOW this song was on the Spook who stood by the door soundtrack. A young herbie at work. love it. i could listen to thison a stressed outday can you feel me.
Another classic cut by the Fusion Maestro himself. H H does it again! Jus wish that He'd come to the UK. What he'd find is are people dropping it hard to his tunes. Wot I mean by that is Dancing Fusion. Like jazz everythin is improvised. Its like the Jeet Kun Do of dance. Its a concept take what's useful & junk the rest. none of the dancers are trained. Its exciting to watch. Dynamic & explosive at the same time mezmorising. Flex Groover/Jazz/Fusion Dancer Leeds UK
My brother turned me on to a Dutch radio recording of Tribal Tech covering this song live at a festival 10 years or so ago. There are so few bands with the chops to attempt it, but if you know anything about Tribal Tech, you are not surprised that they nailed it in the bulls eye! Still, there's nothing quite like the original version. Does this not open up your world? Yaowzuh!

GMONY5, I hear you! Thrust came out when I was in the 10th grade. I already had my world rocked by Harvey on the first album and what David was doing with TOP but then this!!! I spent months just entranced by the album. I still have the poor old worn out vinyl.

On the album cover, I think the mountain location is based on Machu Picchu.

Yaowzuh!
