Where someone without it would just give up and accept his lack of real physical freedom. The first would be a slave escaping off the plantation and the second accepting his fate. I am not sure what he meant by that, but the Civil War was primarily a war to perserve the Union and not to end slavery. Although the civil rights admendments were ratifed the states created laws that basically legalized slavery but in diferent terminology. Reconstruction only lasted around ten years and then everything went back to normal, and just like they did to the indegenous people of the US they legally cheated the blacks.
