According to Americans, Englandland is full of Cockneys. There's a whole plethora of British accents and dialects. Glaswegian, Dundonian, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Northern Irish, Cumbrian, Geordie, Scouse, Brummie, Welsh, Cornish. The list goes on.

Given that I live in the same country as Cockneys, I would say I'm qualified to know their status. They are not a class. Nobody outside of the south east is a cockney, unless they have moved. In the same way, nobody outside of the Newcastle area is a Geordie, and nobody outside of the Liverpool area is a Scouser.

If it was a class, then cockneys would be found all over, with a range of regional accents. Cockneys come from the south east. Whoever told you that cockney is a class is an idiot.

Cockneys traditionally are said to be born within earshot of the 'Bow Bells' in London, but more generically they are know as working class Londoners and sometimes people from the South-East as a whole are lumped together with them. They are not a class in themselves as you said, but they are synonymous with the working class.
