Thanks mate. I used Photoshop to create all the bits like torsos, heads, arms lights etc and After Effects to animate all the layers and glue it together with the music ... and Yep, I kind of skipped the guys in the tracks suits :-)

how did you make the pixel characters

I painted them in Photoshop in several parts (head, body limbs etc.) each in the different animation phases and then I animated them in After Effects putting it all together in the right timing.
