The C.R.T.C. mandates that the satellite companies and cable companies carry these local stations. They have no choice in this matter what so ever. These local T.V. stations have benefited tremendously from having their broadcasts being delivered to every part of the country. This is just Corporate Greed and if they get this fee/tax put through, Ill call it what it really is Corporate Welfare. Personally, Ill go Black Market for my T.V. before I pay these greedy bastards one single dime.
My contempt for the C.R.T.C. and this current federal government is growing. How dare you try to steal more money out of my pockets like this. This is supposed to be a free market economy. If these private broadcasters can't make it on their own, then it's time to do what every other free market company in Canada has to do in these hard times and that is down size your company or close the damn doors.
It's not about not making it on their own, it's about having their content being taken without being paid for by cable co's and then the cable co's sell that content to you. So in a way, you're buying stolen goods. The cable co, in a way, IS the black market! That being said, I'm not sure what a tax solves because yes, that cost is just passed down to us with increased prices. Currently I'm back to free tv with an antenna and watching shows online and DVD.
If this tax is allowed to go through, it will set a precedent for future corporate businesses in Canada. By that I mean dont rule out the newspaper industry lobbying the federal government next to tax the internet to give them Corporate Welfare also. If you think that cant happen, just look at what is happening already in Canada with T.V..
I have zero love for the Cable and Satellite companies as I know these greedy companies are also ripping me off to no end but ultimately any fee / tax is going to be passed on to me, the consumer and I refuse to pay anymore then what I am already being gouged. I'm fighting back this time and I'm refusing to pay "Corporate Welfare" to these "Private Broadcasters". If this tax passes, I'm going to cancel my cable and go total Black Market for my TV. By the way, where's my bailout?
Cable co's like Rogers here and Comcast in the States need to be put on a very short leash. CBC should put their content online with free access to their current content, and charge a small fee for people to see their back catalogue... I'd much rather pay it to the people that produce the content. Rogers and Comcast are nothing but a pizza delivery driver bringing the content to us. They didn't make the pizza, why should they get money for it while the cooks get nothing??!! ...end rant
OK I see your argument, but we're being charged a cable increase. So maybe you could have the Fed Minister raise this in the House in a loud way? Or get those Senators to work on this? I'm feeling like the pawn in this issue and I have the bill to prove it.
Where in heck is the CRTC in this? As far as I can tell they've let us all down.
"Value for signal - no cost to you" ...
Famous last words. My hard earned money is already paying this liar's huge salary at the Moneypit they call the CBC.
