I remember before the season started my dad joked were going to the Rose Bowl if Northwestern makes it. We never went but it just shows you no one expected it.
I remember NBC kept playing clips of training camp for Notre Dame. The announcer kinda joked well doesn't look like it is working today. I miss that season.
Chris Martin at 7:00 is hilarious. He just walks through Lou Holtz to tease the camera. I know Fitzgerald gets all the attention on defense, and rightfully so, but Martin and Ismaeli were as good as it gets at the DB position.
@TheStopmotionguy1000 -- surprised you had to ask...Noter Dame WAS a national power prior to this game and certainly is no longer; Northwestern WAS a "losing" program prior to this game and certainly is no longer.
I remember I was just starting the 10th grade and my dad and I watched this game. I remember (before I knew about football much) telling my dad ND may not win, and he was like yeah right. It's one of my lasting memories we spent together!
I'm an Irish fan and my Dad is an alum (I'm a University of Arizona alum, still Irish fan). Dad and I were like, boy, they had better be good. Then when they lost to Miami Ohio, we were pissed. After that, man, that was some team
After NU beat Notre Dame, the amazing thing was that NU lost their next game to Miami of Ohio who were coached, I think, by Randy Walker. That would be the only loss for NU until the Rose Bowl. What an amazing year. Can this year's Cats go undefeated???
That was a good season in college football...beginning of LSU's resurgance, really wish Ohio State had played Northwestern that year...I think it would have been classic.
Absolutely unbelievable. I graduated NU in '05, but I still remember this gem 10 years earlier. I was at the OSU victory, and it felt like I would imagine this one did, although we didn't make it to a bowl that year. Fitz is gonna take us to the promised land! Go Cats!
That was a great Northwestern team. You had Barnett, who I think did his finest coaching at Northwestern, you had Heisman Trophy Finalist Darnell Autry at RB, a phenomenal player, and of course Pat Fitzgerald at linebacker. To win at Notre Dame and then to come to Ann Arbor and beat us showed that it indeed was a cinderella season for Northwestern.
Amazing Wildcat team...Barnett made a name for himself on that day...ND Football was going downhill for some reasons no one will ever really talk about :(
I expect this to happen again in 2014!! Go Big Ten! Beat that team in South Bend.

The amazing thing about college football, how the histories of two entire programs can be radically changed by a single game.

This game was the turning point for BOTH programs. Neither has ever been the same.
