  • One thing that always surprised me about Canada is the very high homeless population in their large cities. I'm from the US, but have visited Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, and others many times. The number/presence of pan handlers and homeless people is off the charts compared to US cities. It's not an insult at all, I'm just shocked that there would be such a high rate in such a wealthy (and COLD) country. Any ideas?

  • @mlc2005 I know that Vancouver has homeless because it is the best place in Canada for weather because it is around freezing in the winter and a comfortable temperature in the summer. They come from other parts of the country. I think that other canadian cities and vancouver also, get homeless from the USA because the streets here are usually safer. I heard that some get free train rides to another city because they don't want to deal with the homeless.

  • Thanks for posting! I was surprised that the narrator said Downtown Eastside was "a horrible secret," because it's just as well-known (at least in Canada and the US) as other crime-ridden areas like the south bronx or south central, etc.

I actually really admire the way Vancouver is taking a progressive approach with these issues (needle exchanges, safe injection facilities, and community centered policing that is very lax by most standards).

  • simple solution, forcet rehab, they get kitted out police to grab ANYONE that is clearly on drugs around that area, throw em in a van, and take them to a rehab facility, build temporary rehab centres if needed, cage them up seperate then see all those grotty lookin shops and areas where their gettin high, fix them all up n make it mint, and fuck the human rights, their not living, their just existance, miserable existace, so u keep them locked away, fed and watered ofcourse

  • I find this soo disturbing to watch , it brings back memories of when my youngest sister: Janet Hery hung around there. Now she is one of the missing women. She's been missing since June 1997. She was a mom she was a sister and friend. she was loving I miss her soo much. Right now The public inquiry into why the police did'nt do anything in the beginning when they heard a young women was attaced by Robert Pickon. I will be taking the stand. not sure when yet.

  • @kimo2330 I send my love to you.. I have a sister as well who has slipped through the system and desperately needs help. She shows improvements, but then falls back again in the depths of dispair. I often thought of how I would feel if one of those woman were my sister and my heart goes out to you and your family. I hope my sister will recover and always live in fear of what the end will be. No one deserves that. We can all show love and compassion even if we don't make sense of it

  • please let me know this back music title, if someone know

  • Some one should do a video focusing on the damn dealers ruling each block like its their own personal bit of real estate! I see these bastards every day running up and down the block yelling and acting in a threatening manner...really pisses me off that the police don't do shit to put a stop to this!

  • beggars in Vancouver because of charity organization are there to give them food,,,if not food and money from people who help them by giving for free money they will be change place

  • I lived in Surrey/North Delta and Eastside Vancouver is where they all hang out. Blocks after blocks of them. I think they have the most homeless people within a 4 block radius in North America.

  • the first minute of footage is taken from a documentary called "Streets of Plenty". It's a great documentary that further discusses the issues of the Downtown Eastside.

  • Whats the name of the song?? anyone know??

The song at the start that is...

  • i am a recovering heroin addict myself (almost 2 years). it is possible to stop if you really want to, but you do need support of some sort, and so many people on the streets do not have that! People who do not understand addiction are so quick to judge us. My heart and prayers go out to addicts every single day. The only thing that truely saved me was really believing in god for once, and once i reallllly belived in him, he fixed me!

  • @rachael2071 there is support to stop, like safeinjectionsites, IM 16 YEARS OLD AND IVE DONE METH, SPEED, CRACK, PERKS, COCAINE, X, ACID, SHROOMS, ANYTHING U CAN NAME THAT WILL GET U HIGH, I CHOSE ONE DAY TO STOP BECAUSE I GOT BORED OF THE HIGH AND KNEW THAT U CANT LIVE YOUR LIFE DOING THAT SHIT! NO GOD, NO SUPPORT, JUST WILLPOWER, ITS THAT EASY, AND THAT IS WHAT PEOPLE NEED TO UNDERSTAND. but the truth about vancouver is, most of those people are mentally ill, that makes it harder

  • @tokesalot42069 o really. describe all the highs it gave you and how they all differed... probably a pussy and did weed and didnt like the perception so you're tryna glamourize the situation just so u can callyourself an "addict" so people will think your parents telling you to go to your room is the "hard life". try being addicted all your life like these people whereas they have 70% chance of not ever quitting.

    thanks.

  • @DANIELWHERESTHEB0AT well i apologize, i wasnt addicted to something as much as these people are, and i know lots of people that were hardcore addicts, i just saw kids my age that i chilled with letting the drug take themselves over and i sed im getting away from this before the drug controls me, so im sorry if offended you but im just saying i was smart enough to see the signs and understand not to go down that path

  • @tokesalot42069 You haven't done shit, you wouldn't say meth and than speed right after if you knew anything about drugs. There the same thing retard.

  • @MrMsteezy lol mdma is speed and crystal meth is different so they arent the same thing, and i have done mdma, but im not dumb enough to do str8 crystal

  • @tokesalot42069 Haha you sir officially dont know shit about drugs. mdma is ecstasy which can sometimes be laced with speed, also know as crystal meth you idiot. Your dumb enough to think mdma is speed and to think speed is different from crystal you have to be retarded.

  • @MrMsteezy As this man has said mdma is known on the street as ecstasy NOT speed. Speed is an amphetamine such as crystal meth or ice, jib etc. Many people really have no idea what addiction is like and don't understand why people cannot quit and it angers me when uneducated people criticize these people. For one, you dom't know them or what they went through as children or are going through today. Most have mental issues and got into drugs to feel better/self medicate.

  • @rachael2071 me to I recieved Jesus as my saviour 21 years ago and I am alcohol and drug free still to this day....I am proud of you and I rejoice for your life...God bless you and Merry Christmas!

  • They should have waited a few more years before arresting pickton, he would have cleaned hastings up nice and good :o)

  • 1:51 the cop is like WOW I would let her suck my dick!

  • Junkie scum Oxygen thieves

  • HOME OF THE STICK PPL

  • sad.

  • It's interesting that although we have a major drug problem here in Vancouver, we do not have the violence that is associated with drug addiction in US cities. I live and work in east Vancouver. Working for a mental health org I see the addiction and hopelessness but I do not see the violence that I see south of our borders. I am grateful for this and I think it's the compassion we have in Canada, it shows in our people, even the addicted ones.

  • @catherinestdenis1 The US is very unique in how it marginalizes it's suffering.

Most countries you ask to go where the action is you get taken to the heart of the business district, the US you get taken to some long forgotten subdivision or port. An old neighbourhood gets "gentrified" in the US and the long time inhabitants aren't allowed to stay. The very reason the Olympics caused so much fuss, people had a real problem with the city's plan to hide other people.

  • @catherinestdenis1 I agree

  • Frrreeeeddddmmmmmmaaaaaannnnnnn! Not a good name.

  • "The human brain a masterpiece of beauty and self destruction"

  • yeah this video is powerful and i can directly relate because i live in an area like that in dublin

    what is that song called?

  • i lock my car doors whenever i drive thru hastings and main

  • I'm watching this and what comes to mind is this..I am against animal testing because of the horrors involved with that, and here I see people voluntarily doing it this to themselves.

  • i just cant see it -.- poor people! i thank God that gives me a life such as mine!

  • IBOGAINE is a drug that CURES addiction. RESEARCH IBOGAINE HCL.

  • Don't blame Vancouver, blame the rest of Canada..Most of Vancouver's homeless are from other places in the country like Calgary and even Montreal. The government sends them over because the climate in Vancouver is temperate.

  • @xLaxLax That's so true!! Anyone who doubts this can go talk to the crackheads and junkies in the DTES. Most of them are from TO or somewhere else out east. Even a lot of the Listerine drinkers, tweakers, et al., are from out east. I dare people to ask the addicts themselves.

  • crack heads are good times. also, if it's such a problem just kill them all

  • it,s cool...like a self cleaning oven...junkies killing junkies...it,s a perfect system...keep up the good work vancouver....all big cities should operate like them...lol

  • I feel really sorry for the old people that are homeless on the eastside. The young ones, not so much. They are perfectly capable of stopping by seeking help but they don't.

  • these people need to tie a noose

  • fuck man.....this is why robert pickton did what he did

  • @delaney12 who is Robert Pickton?

  • @kelaltieri Canada's worst serial killer. Killed countless women that were from the downtown eastside. Just horrific....and got away with it because the situation in that area is so overlooked by maybe....police, politicians, the public. Quite a black mark on our country.

  • @madmoe36 I meant many instead of maybe.

  • Vancouver will not do any thing to help these people because there way of things is that if they dye the city will look nicer i am and the only way these people can get off the drugs is if they want to help them self's this i know i use to live there and i got out i am now 6 years clean

  • @mckenney1980 Use periods in your sentences. They are your friend.

  • @leadguitarist999 i think an ex-junky has bigger priorities in life than satisfying your desire for proper grammar.

You should have used a comma, not a period, by the way.

  • @PhilDesigns Shows how much you know, poopy head.

  • @mckenney1980 so you are saying safe injection sites, outreach programs, shelters, and food giving away is useless? you're saying we shouldn't help people down on their luck with no home? sure they have to make teh decision themselves to stop, but we can be here to help 100% of the way

  • @mckenney1980 congratulations on your recovery!! i live in vancouver and i remain hopeful more people will help themself out of this lifestyle.

  • @mckenney1980 stay free I have been free from drug and alcohol abuse for 21 years and going forward I gave my life to Jesus....

  • @lucy9359 your life is ur own, and ur destiny is ur own, dont be blinded by religion

  • @tokesalot42069 believing in Jesus saved me from a life of giving my body away, no self respect and drugs, I think that makes it a good choice my friend!

  • @lucy9359 everybody has a different reaction to addiction, but everybody has the power in themselves to stop

  • @mckenney1980 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @bikines what does that mean where do you live i live in canada in calgary now but i use to live in vancouver

  • Falling angels stock in hell..

  • Canada is one of the few places where something like this can occur. Most other countries there isnt this problem because the government doesnt give these people welfare cheques to support their addiction.

  • @mnkystyle Name one well populated country in the world where this doesn't happen. I see it everyday in the US.

  • powerful song

  • why doesn't vancouver do something to help these people and clean up the block ? what the fuck is wrong with them ? you just cant let people live this way !!! and they dont have to . there are options enough to not have all this shit on the streets where kids have to see some guy shooting up ! i get realy mad when i see these kinds of vids. these are the forgotten people , the lost and downtrodden , who need help and people to help them and for the public to stop judging and condemming them .

  • @lunaticrichard Vancouver isn't the only Canadian city with this same problem. Its disturbing

  • you should probably give credit to Streets of Plenty for this footage...

  • I accidentally walked right down Hastings to the epicenter at Hastings and Main when I first arrived in Vancouver for a professional conference. I've seen slums before, but this was intense! I was so fascinated I actually was compelled to dress down into a dirty clothes and do another full coverage pass to see it again. I just couldn't believe how concentrated it was!

  • @hathawbj and what did jou do ? just walk and watch ? scared shitless , too afraid to speak to any of them ? or give someone a sandwich ? welkom to life in hell !!

  • lady at 1:57 looks pretty cute, i wouldnt mind trading crack for a condomless blowjob from that. would you? haha

  • @PoliticalGangster you mean a condomless gummer?

  • @DiCkRiChArDz your sick man!

  • the chick at 2:20 looks alright

  • As an American I was shocked by what I saw when I visited Downtown Vancouver. I've seen lots of crazy stuff in the US but DAMN!

  • Amazing! =( and very disturbing!

  • Wow dude, this is a really powerful vid!

The music sent shivers down my spine!

    Thanks for putting this up!!
