@EMS8643; That's a Bell 47, those flew well into the 1970's. The first season was shown to take place in 1973, but this is the pilot which was undated, not the 1980s that came much later. Not excusing it, there's far more than enough on this show to excuse! But I still love the production values and designs of sets and equipment. Nothing beats the Seaview's art deco look. Every car on the road today literally owes it's headlights to the windows of the original version!
That's right, 'Action'. All three networks indeed began scheduling 100% color programs (with the exception of various black and white movies, and several CBS and ABC news documentaries) in prime-time in September 1966. Daytime, however, took longer to "convert" to full-color on ABC and CBS {their last regularly scheduled b/w series was daytime repeats of "THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW" in 1969}.
Again, CBS didn't telecast ANY color series until the fall of 1965, 'vivid' [and even then, about half of its prime-time schedule was still in black and white]- "THE LUCY SHOW" was filmed in color (beginning with season two), but was not telecast IN color until September 1965, at the same time "THE RED SKELTON HOUR" was "converted" to color. ABC was FINALLY able to telecast about 45% of its evening schedule in color in the fall of '65 (including "VOYAGE").
@fromthesidelines Actually, all networks went "living color" in the fall season of 1966. Yes, I remember 1965. Green Acres was filmed in color, but Lost in Space (Season one.) wasn't. And both those series debuted the very same night!
I WONDER WHY FOX CUT OUT THE OPENING CREDITS AND REPLACED IT WITH OPENING FROM SEASON ONE ON THERE AWEFUL DVDS I HAD THIS ON VIDEO TAPE FROM COLUMBIA WHERE THIS FROM I SAY AWEFUL DVDS BECAUSE THEY ARE TWO SIDED AND WHY COULDNT THEY OF HAD 4 SHOWS AND EACH SIDE ON ALL OF THERE SETS DISK ONE SIDE 1 HAS 4 SHOWS WHILE THE OTHER DISKS ONLY HAVE TWO SHOWS
When Allen filmed the "LOST IN SPACE" pilot in December 1964 for CBS, they weren't scheduling ANY color series at that time. Even when they began to program about half of their prime-time lineup in color in the fall of '65, he continued filming the first season in black and white.
Irwin filmed the pilot in the middle of the 1963-'64 season [he began work on it in December 1963]- apparently, he was thinking in terms of eventually reediting the color version of the pilot as a "feature film" for foreign release. Unfortunately, he had to film the first season in black and white because ABC could only schedule a few color series for the 1964-'65 season {"THE FLINTSTONES" and "JONNY QUEST"}, due to a lack of financial and technical resources...
IRWIN ALLEN love his trademark stylized fonts for each of his films and TV shows-they were kind of psychedelic in a way, before their time; VOYAGE was update for the TV show
I watched an old vhs tape of this episode in color.I remember seeing the credits at the end
showing copyright 1963.
The first season of Voyage and Lost in space should have all been shot in color. The color version of this was a few minutes shorter. But I suppose if the whole pilot was shot in color Fox could easily cut a longer version.
Too bad this original version was not on the DVD.

I was only a boy, but I'd watch this show every Sunday night. Television shows from the 60s couldn't be beat!

A series shot in the early 1960s, supposedly taking place in the late 1980s, using a 1950s model helicopter? Continuity, people?

The early episodes were excellent, because the writers had time to make decent scripts

@fromthesidelines, "The Red Skelton Show" and "The Lucy Show" were the only shows on C.B.S. being televised in color at that time.
