I don't think you're as up to date on the US KOF scene as you think you are. There's a thriving scene in Norcal thanks to places like Southtown Arcade and Gamecenter. Socal players even came up to the most recent XIII ranbat.
There's also a decent online community for 98/02. While it's no replacement for offline play, it's better than going in to XIII cold.
XIII is doing well in areas that already have established FG scenes; online play is only going to help it grow in areas that don't.
@multitrackdriftu I know about NorCal trust me I know all about Southtown Arcade and Gamecenter...trust me..I know about the ranbats etc..bottom line is STILL SoCal is quite stronger...but NorCal and SoCal alone in addition to New York isn't enough to save the USA.
@DarkGeese Of course Socal is stronger, they've been playing KOF (not just XIII) for way longer. That's a given.
But I think it speaks volumes that in an area with a predominantly Capcom scene, XIII is getting more attention than any KOF has before.
I think you're looking too much in to the issue of online play. Most of the SF scene in the US is forced to play online due to a lack of players in less densely populated areas. It's not unique to KOF nor is it the reason we're not good at it.
@multitrackdriftu Well bottom line is online is going to make a difference but not that much...if people can't get on SoCal's level it isn't going to matter in the end at all...as Mr. Wizard said if KOF13 doesn't get 300 people at EVO next year the US Snk scene has a lot of problems..so I'm not really counting on anything but a side tournament and bringing some people from other areas...if people don't play more people like SoCal the USA will never be good at KOF..never...
@DarkGeese Why would KOF need 300 entrants? I don't think BlazBlue, Tekken or Melty Blood ever got 300 entrants. Fewer serious players > more casual players, don't you agree?
Plus, the biggest FG scenes in the US are in Norcal, Socal, Texas and New York. Three of four have active KOF scenes that I know of.
XIII isn't going to be a success overnight, but I'm confident it will grow. If you choose not to be a part of it, I respect that decision. But don't say the US scene is something it isn't.
@multitrackdriftu That is what Mr. Wizard said I am just taking it at that and not really holding optimism otherwise. What do you mean don't say the US scene is something that it isn't? The US SNK scene is not strong, everyone knows that it's obvious, only true strength overall is SoCal and New York compared to other countries and that isn't enough it isn't. As this video says, my time is better spent with those that are already at a certain level in KOF..to which most of the USA is not..
they just need to fucking play the game. That's it, just play the game stop with your, ""OHH I'M JUST WAITING FOR KOF XIII to hit"" bullshit, play the game, play it now we have kof2k2um, 98um, ggpo 2002,98,2000,97. WE have access to them like never before what are you whining about.
@Rukawa11kaede See what they don't tell you on most of these sites is what I tell people, if you just wait for KOF13 to come out you are going to be dead in the water on an international level to start playing KOF. That's like me saying I'm going to wait until Madden 13 to play Madden seriously and here I am competiing against those that have been playing Madden since like 01 on a COMPETITIVE LEVEL INTERNATIONALLY..I'm dead in the water for a few years at least unless..I travel...
@DarkGeese I can see that, nobody can deny the fact that traveling and compete with the very best WILL MAKE YOU BETTER, but I think most of the U.S see the "is it worth it factor?" the U.S don't want to travel they want to be better by themselves, it's their culture, their way of thinking, they don't want to copy other cultures, they want to better on their own.
@Rukawa11kaede Yes but they have to understand in order to be better they have to see what others are doing. That would be like Mexico deciding they are going to beat the Japanese and the USA in SSF4 AE at EVO without seeing the current level of the USA to determine if that's even feasible...not a wise choice at all...
@Rukawa11kaede The people that do the best in tournaments are the ones that know what the other countries/players are doing...so it's not about copying anyone, it's about learning new stuff that otherwise will come back to bite you in the ass in a tournament because you've never seen that before...
@Rukawa11kaede Also with that "Is it worth it mentality" The USA will never ever beat the powerhouses in KOF...they won't even get past SoCal, myself or NYC....
@DarkGeese I agree, trying to argue in forums is worthless I've heard some people calling you "DG is just a tool" like shit how people can criticized somebody like that. The anonymity that gives you the internet
@Rukawa11kaede Yeah exactly that's why I don't bother with SRK anymore and for most of it none of the forums mainly anymore..I just don't see a point..if people want to get a hold of me and really want to talk to me they know how to get a hold of me...US forums for me are simply a waste of time...
I think there are very few serious kof players in the U.S like laban, omerta, emil(canadian) from what i've experienced playing against them they're good, they have a good basis but still I think they have a lot of holes to fill, emil being the strongest and the one I couldn't beat I thought he was up to the level but we all saw that bala video. Outside of those I think many in srk just post and whine about tiers and don't play at all. If the u.s really want to embrace kof and be good at it.......
@Rukawa11kaede Yes and Emil is nowhere near the level to play against the tops in KOF 2002 at all. Thing is the more I'm seeing skill around the world, the truth of the matter is that people understand there is no "clean start" with KOF13, you have those that have been playing KOF at a competitive level for years starting with KOF13, and those that have been doing that PLUS playing the arcade..how is there a "clean start" with KOF13? It's an uphill battle for MANY..
@DarkGeese I know it's stupid. Trying to convince old seasoned capcom players to play kof it's a waste of time but I think convincing these new influx of new players is a better approach but their attitudes are discouraging. they demand to much(perfect online, gooteks, mike ross and daigos like representatives, stream matches with commentary, interviews etc) with little to no effort whatsoever from their part, WTF!!?? they should had been here in 2002, not even youtube was around
@Rukawa11kaede This is why I don't bother with even DC/SRK really anymore either. Things are too fanboyish and these people want too much when they aren't willing to put ANY hard work in it whatsoever...hence again I think my focus is better suited for SoCal and the other places where this much insignificant drama isn't even a matter...
Here's another analogy to explain to people what is going on here from my POV: Like the Matrix, when Morpheus told Neo he can take the Blue Pill and stay in his little bubble and wake up and everything is the same (Like Professor X and the X-Men/USA being passive believing things are fine things will change on their own) OR...you can take THE RED PILL AND I (MORPHEUS/MAGNETO) CAN SHOW YOU JUST HOW FAR THE RABBIT HOLE GOES..
Another problem I see is popularity. If big name players like JWong, Ross, Gootecks, Daigo, FChamp aren't seen playing it, then it doesn't matter to most players. From what I see, a lot of people don't want to step outside the box and try something new (of course this isn't true of everyone). Capcom and Namco rule N. America. You mention KOF back in the day, SF rip-off was all I heard. Now, with 13 coming out, I HOPE people start paying more attention and join the KOF scene. May even have 1 here
@genra17 Yeah that's another thing and this is another reason why it's going to be VERY VERY HARD for the USA to ever be relevant outside of NYC and SoCal (and my place of course lol) in KOF. Too many followers not enough leaders....
Guilty Gear and Tekken ruled here in my area for a while (Tekken still does) . I was brought in by the top King player in the country, who trained me and helped expand the scene by bringing in more people. He's the Magneto here, basically. So how do you go about introducing KOF into the Tekken scene w/o the help of known faces?
I play both Capcom and SNK games. Most people see me play things like SF and Marvel. But they don't know (or forget if I tell them) that I am actually pretty good at most SNK games. When I was questioned one day about this over a game of SSFIV, I got a puzzled reaction when I said I prefer SNK. It's one of the few games with a ton of variety and diversity. It's a game of chess for me. The problem I face: can't get people to play. 2K2UM came out on XBL and still couldn't get anyone on board.
@genra17 And unfortunately that is going to bite the USA in the ass come KOF13. If people think they are going to be able to wake up one day and because KOF13 on the internet is lightning fast get good..well they are in for quite a surprise....
yeah dude people here thing they are better then other places but they don't see the other places like hight level cause are "poor" because TV news, but i thing they are much more better player on the places that we have not been, and dude i will really like to play in a hight level on KOF13 but i don't know what can i improve, to be better, player my gameplay is like basic stuff and i like to cancel move a lot like example with kim A in air,D hcb and with EXmove is kinda better
@heztynk Yeah and see this is another thing I can't stand about the USA, and it is this very attitude that will stop the USA as a whole outside of SoCal and New York from ever being relevant on the world scene in KOF...
