Not that rajini is a good actor, but when exactly was mohan at his peak?? he couldn't act, couldn't speak a word of tamil and had no looks. all he could do was hold a mike.

hey man, the 80's belonged to Mohan. Rajini was about to retire and only because of stiff competition from the folks like Mohan, Prabhu, Karthick, T Rajendran and Vijayakanth. And ofcourse the biggest star of Tamil cinema Kamal Haasan sitting in the top. But Rajini had no hopes and wanted to renounce his occupation for he was that bad. But then K.Balachandar and Kamal got him to act again I think.
