do you guys breed your own feeder rats? I'm curious as to know how you guys feed your huge reptile collection. if you would buy the rats you would spent thousands of dollars just on food per week. if you do breed your own food i think it would be pretty cool for all of your fans like my self to see it.
love the shows but when are you going to come to canada or even more spicficly eastern canada? because i would love to by a snake off of you because i have done all of my reseach and have every thing i need and need to know.but just wondering when or even if you are coming to canada so talk to you later.
HR669 is shit i normaly dont curse but heck i will they say they wont hurt the economey but it would kill it its a very big buissness and if they shut it down LOTS of pepole would lose there income and houses and all diffrent kinds of stuff i mean the goverment is a load of shit.
i think that the HR669 law is a bunch of crap. Why should the government be telling me that i cant own certain reptiles. I think that it is because they dont even have a clue to as how big the reptile industry actualy is.
@rcman450 i hate that law with a passion!!! i live in Florida and as you know the Glades is overran w/Burmese Pythons, green anacondas,A.rock pythons, and retics...because of a few ignorant asses who couldn't take care of them....
I got a question about my snake it eats rabbits but i got banned from the pet store for buying a rabbit and feeding it to him in the store where do i get some i dont want to hunt some
I had a pet frog. He was my favorite pet. then one day my dad cleaned out his cage while i was in school and he out COLD water in the tank. as soon as he did that he put my frog in there! He didnt know the water had to be room temerature. So when i got home, my frog was dead.
Hey guys im a huge fan of the show but anyways i got a quick question? I did a lot of research and i learned that bearded dragons were very tame and nice animals well anyways i just bout a baby bearded and he is the meanest little guy i've ever
I think that hr669 is somewhat of an attack on the reptile industry. It is a had buisness to tax since you can sell world wide and don't have to report any sales what so ever so how can they tax it? They can't tax it (just like pot) so they make it illegal to be inpossesion of it or them and divy out huge fines for those that are found in possesion. Just my 2 cents but it seems very likely givin the reputaion of this fine "for the people" government. Peace out ya'll......
How can they pass the HR699 bill when the same government gave bail out money to the car companies on the basis that if those businesses went out of business they would lose thousands of jobs? This bill would mean the closing of almost all pet stores and would put 1000's of breeders out of business. Passing this bill would hurt the economy more than anything else has so far.
The H.R. 669 bill, i dont aggree with it one bit. Theres drugs, murders, alchol, and other bad things out there, and they want to get rid of somthing that actuallyput bread on the table for somepeople.I mean come on.
come on do you really think hr669 is really going to stop the selling and breeding of reptiles just look at pirhanas for example many people arent suposed to own them but they are common around where i live although we should try very hard not to pass hr669 because it blows
because i live in england the HR669 doesnt effect me but i am still strongly against it. think that snakes and other reptiles have become almost family to their owners and the HR669 ban is the wrong approach to dealing with the problem
they are rewriting the bill to change it up but still try to prevent it and from what i understand they are making a ab119 bill or something to eliminate all reptile shows and face toface reptile selling. i have had my snake for about 3 months and just bought 1 more male to breed so this bill would ruin my plans for breeding boa consrtictors
HR 669 is a joke. not only will it not help the problem, it may just make more. as a younger citizen in the reptile community i have seen my fair share of illegal reptile deals go down. nothing too bad, a baby caiman here, a copperhead there, but overall nothing too extreme. if HR 669 is put into place i think our great hobby will become just another corner of the underground illegal world. look at prohibition, nothing stopped them from making alcohol, what should stop all of us from this hobby?
i think the hr669 is over jurastic i do not agree with it but they do have a reason some people would buy a exotic animal and releas it into the wild so they have a point but i completly disagree i own reptiles my self great vid hope to see you at the hamburge pa rep expo
I think the next step is to re-do the bill, maybe so you have to get a license for the huge snakes like a burm, so people like you guys can keep them, but a person can't just go out and get one without having experience with snakes, and not knowing what they are doing.
hey brian. the new pinstripe i bought from u is doin really great. im really happy. thats the second snake i bought off u, its eating well and its friendly so i guess the tub he was in was good for him since hes so nice, thank u so much
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Do you think its moraly acceptable to keep thousands of animals in theese tiny tubs? snakes cant be inprisioned like that....they and ment to be roaming around and hunting for themslefs. Your dooming your snake to a life of misery. Also the mice you feed, i understand that snakes eat rodents but in nature the rodents have a chance to escape. The rodents you use have their life planned out before there even born. I think you need to take a long hard look at what your doing.
HR669 is and was beyond ridiculous. I understand controlling the exotic animals to a point but to rid them all is just pushing it. Cats are one of the most invasive species out there and they were not on the list there looking in the wrong direction when going about this. It should also be done state by state. Thanks guys love the show.
I totaly disagree with the HR669 bill, i mean i understand that some people buy "exotic" pets and shortly after decide they dont want them, but there are also people out there that are more then happy to take those pets off your hands, so why should we, the people who enjoy these pets be punished because other people would rather just release a pet into the wild?.....i ask you now..........
In response to your Tip of the Week: I know of a couple different ways of preventing spills. For one, it's a lot easier if you put any tall bowl with a lip in the cage, sinking it as close to the bottom as possible.
For slightly bigger snakes (4-6 ft), you should use a heavy ceramic dog food/water bowl. For even larger snakes (7-10 ft). use a large saucer built for holding a large flower pot. Anything larger requires a section of the enclosure dedicated to water if it's in an aquarium. :)
This is definitely a good overview of what people need to know before buying herp. I have a total of 11 different snakes/lizards/chameleons now, oh, and one treefrog. That's topping out what i can own at the moment, but I tell everyone that comes through my store they need to learn before buying anything from me. Other associates just sell mindlessly, but if I can help even 5% of these guys get a better home, then I'm doing my job as a herp enthusiast. Kudos.
that has never happened to me b4, and i don't see why it would. but i can see a snake being defense from the foreign smell. it's best off just to wash your hands.
What's stopping you? Most are inexpensive and if you want to use good supplies for your snake at first I say put out about $100 at the beginning and you have a cheap pet for 10 or more years!
May be we can make a deal with the government all they think is stop breading and getting more pets that all the problems with snakes and other pets will go away. TO keep them form bothering us maybe we can make them a deal?
Dude this vid is awesome and funny this is 1 of the best there is 4real..... u people should have there own show on animal planet or something keep it up..
hr669 is so stupit there are so many people who love the passon of reptils an animals the hr669 bill shouldn't even excized we should put a stop to it permentlly cause if it passes there would be so many jobs closing an how our ecominy is right now it would be like World war for animals .
hr669 is very stupid as it would be unpredictible of what would happen if they took away all the non-native spieces all reptile and furry pet shops would e closed down and all the big compnays like you would be out of business it is really unreal what would happen so for yours and everyone els sack lets put a stop to hr669.
Very relevant show Brian, thanks. HR669 is gone, but another one popped up. I don't know what it is called, but I wish there were something I could do besides sending my 22 letters and various emails. If you could incorporate what to do for the next one into another spin off of the snakebytes episodes like you did for HR669, I think I speak for everyone when I say that it would be greatly appreciated. Keep it up,
The next step to HR 669 is to make it go onto T.V. Make commercials, or Stickers, or put it in the newspaper to prevent HR669. Most people own exotic animals and don't even know about the bill.
Awsome show as usual. education is 100% important!! As for Kel's Question of the week. HR669 has been decapitated in my opinion, but like a roach... it can still live for a little while. The best way to ensure we stay safe on this legislation is to stay on top of our congress people, and the subcommittee members to gain their support!
Have you ever built a rack system? I have over 60 tanks in my room and it is a little space comsuming especially when I'm using a couple of ladders as makeshift racks. (sorry I had so much to say)
Here's another tip: if you have arboreal animals you can glue the pvc onto the wall of your aquarium/tank or use velcro too hold it in place. Then you have a dish that sits off the ground making it easier for the animal to eat. I use this especially with my giant day geckos and crested geckos, However some snakes like it too. For example one of my tree boas loves to have a hanging water dish and even my ball python loves to climb and have a suspended dish.
It's good you guys did an episode like this. A lot of people don't do any research before they buy and end up with an animal that is too big or too needy for them. The green iguana is the most commonly mistaken pet and there seems like there is a never ending supply of iguanas that people couldn't care for.
I would suggest that in comparison just as many UK & Europeans let lose their reps etc. its just that over here the majority of reps die due to the climate.
Oh and if your going to do something like slagging off America, at least have the decency to spell BRITAIN correctly.
Hopefully most people in here will understand you certainly DONT speak for Britain... or Britan!
you have to be enspected before you get that animal so they know you have the right accomadation and knowledge, although you have to pay for this license, not many common kept animals are on the list!
Even though im from the UK i would hate for the hr669 to become in place, I dont understand why the US goverment cant do what ours has, put laws in place like the wild dangerous animal license, all this license does is make sure that people without the right knowledge cannot own a dangerous animal, the license has a list of animals that are classed dangerous and will need a license before getting one,
i hate it when people dont do there research befor buyin a snake it is amazing how many people come in the shop i work in with snakes that they dont want because they dont like mice or they have got to big for them so everyone who is interested in reptiles we try to educate them as much as possible be for they buy there perfect reptile:)
Brian snake still wont eat tried scenting defrosting it normally and with water.shes normally a rlly good feeder and now she just wont eat wht should i do the petshop said it was my hamster the snaek smelt it and it wouldnt eat till it got the hamster???this sunday my snake wouldnt have eaten in 5 weeksPS i took the hamster out of the room.
LMFAO!!!! the beging of the vid was hilarious when geoge walked in with the huge ass burm around his shoulders, and he's like "what the hell is this!!!"LOL
Guys, absolutely love your show, started watching it only a few weeks back now, and am addicted, so many cool snakes you got there!
Brian, think that you could maybe impart some of the information from this episode onto the national curriculum? Lol. That'd be sweet!
Re the smoking taxes, of course people wont stop due to taxes, but then do you honestly think the gov. think people will stop either? It gets them more money to pay off debt they owe.
HR669 is BULL! Just like the infringments on the 2nd amendment. How far is the govt going to try & push us before the citizens revolt & start another civil war?? Alot of people are getting fed up & if pushed further will start to push back. I love my country but our govt needs to step off.
haha, yeah i just try to add some humor to a serious topic to lighten the mood. its r j (pronounced hab-ur-strow haberstroh haburstrow, ehh it's my lastname lol so that's about all i can do!). awesome video as always btw.
hey never seen this before. one thingi recomend is not keeping a bearded dragon in a aquarium..temps can rise too quickly. i always use wooden vivariums. oh and they should have their own uv tube!
I think people like yourselves shoud introduce different exotic pets to local congressmen to try and win them over as they might say ' Oh, this snake isn't so bad.' or 'Oh,this gerbil isn't so bad.' This way should hopefully work.
No animal should be banned, unless endangered or wild caught, much like I think about firearms, the people who usually have them are responsible owners. Theres always that small group that ruins it for everyone, if the government wants take away are animals, they should have a better reason. Why not issue licenses for exotic, venomous, large, common pets, rather than ban them at least. It'l insure that every pet owner does there basic research etc...
I think that although HR669 has a good reason to be in place, but I also find it almost unnecessary. Invasive species aren't so much of a threat to the point where foreign animals actually have to be banned. Not to mention if the law were passed, companies that depend on animals and animal products would be struggling considerably more, and with the economy how it is, many might go out of business.
Hey just wanted to let you know it was great seeing you at the NY reptile show. I got to meet Chewy.
Funny with the whole skit in the beginning.I work at a petstore and some girl said she had a burm. It was already 3 ft that her boyfriend got her she doenst want anymore. I told her bring it in and one of the managers will take it. Funny thing was that it was an albino corn snake that was 4 ft in a 20g long tank. I was like WOw some burm. ITs huge.(Sarcasim). that girl had no clue what she had.
Great video Brian and definitely love the content. Research is vital to help ensure the future of our hobby as well as the lives of these precious animals. People really shouldn't be hasty to purchase without knowledge and unless they can commit themselves to these animals.
Controlling invasive species is a necessity but HR669 implies a flawed methodology. Peer reviewed scientific studies need to be done before a species is restricted. A broad sweeping legislation that is poorly defined and ill contrived will not create solutions. This piece of legislation would only place a further burden on institutions that already have too much on their plate and stifle numerous business that depend on pet trade.
You know what?....I think what all the reptile people all across the country should do is RALLY! I mean we should group up and go out and picket our cause...we need to be heard and be seen...our words should get some legs attatched to them and show the government exactly what we want!
So, have you figured out how to get a 14 foot corn snake? I'd like a 14' candy cane! ;)
BTW, most of my snakes have outgrown anything PVC could protect (although that is a great idea!) We ended up getting those big dog bowls with sloped outer walls. (Plus, my snakes like to hide under the bowl in the space).
i think the next step should be just holding our ground and recruit as much as we can i know im making this sound like a war but it kind of is just get as many people against it as possible
on brians comment of always willing to help or answer questions it's no joke guys i feel even i've worn out a welcome a little, but he still answers everything i send him, great guy everyone buy from him :D
Love this one for sure, way to many folks go out and just buy without thought, you could not be more right about knowing before you buy everything you can about your new pet. I just gotta disagee with you on pet stores, be careful what store you go to, many I have found just want to sell you anything and give very wrong info.
As to HR669, it is bull crap!!!!! We must all ban together to fight and keep fighting this thing, bad Bill!!!!!
hey Brian. I've been trying to order a snake for about a week now. Your site isn't working properly and nobody has been able to log on. When'll this all be fixed??
After recieving an e-mail back from my congressman I actually seen things from both sides. While I don't want to lose my rights of being able to own reptiles or any other animal I do think something should be done. The gov is spending over a billion dollars to try to control what animals are already in our woods and rivers that don't belong. I personally think tagging may be an option to be able to keep our rights and to find the happy median with the gov. I know not everyone will agree.
It was invasive animals. I think it is the Mississippi river that has the flying fish (can't remember their actual name off top of my head). They are over running the river in certain areas now, so do you just stop it after it already happened? Tagging would hold people accountable for their animals. Accountability would help, it may not stop it but people may think twice.
Those "flying fish" weren't released pets so tagging isn't going to help anything.
Who is going to tag and keep track of all these animals? When you have 600 eggs incubating, how are you going to tag all of those?
It's a bill made by animal rights activists aimed at stopping the ownership of pets. You see, these activists believe that a rat's life is equal to a human's life and keeping a rat in a cage is as cruel as if you kept your kid in a cage.
I agree with you on the animal rights activists trying to stop us from owning animals. I do however feel something needs to be done. If we continue to do nothing while they keep pushing we will all lose our rights of owning animals. Tagging is one option, while it may be hard to keep up with it is something that we could do to keep the animals we want. If you got a better idea I would love to hear it. I don't think tagging is the answer but maybe something to build on.
haha! This was one of the best videos so far! I agree 100%. Im sick and tired of libs trying to take away our reptiles and animals. I think somebody should send a video or something to the FRICKEN PRESIDENT!!!! Hes probly the one BEHIND it al, though
im am very tired of politicians taking away rights of people like us just to exert control over us like making crap like hr 669 just because a snake or a lizard or a hamster isnt in a childrens colouring book doesn't mean they should take rights away from those animals the gouvernement should be focusing more on the swine flu coming from mexico coming to the united states and canada intead of making crap like hr 669
Personally I am sick and tired of these liberals, socialists, and democrats trying to take away more of our rights and exert more control over us. Only reason I can figure people vote them in is because they want more handouts and not have to work for anything. Problem is they fail to realize nothing in life is free. The more the government gives the more control over your life they take. Like the "kidnapper with a lollipop" analogy. Vote for democrats and you will get more HR669 type crap.
While I will admit that some "exotic" species need regulation, the government should really push controlling the cat and dog populations before reptiles and other exotics. Those animals are about a thousand times more ecologically-damaging than reptiles, birds, rodents, and fish will ever be on the whole. The people in power need to get over their bias against owning any animal that you can't find in a children's coloring book.
haha nice episode, im tired of seeing people make the wrong decisions and dont know anything about the animal..not to mention all the horror stories about how people dont take care of their animals that they dont know about......education definitely for the win.
I loved this vid. When I want a pet I look on the internet, if I plan on getting it I get book then go to an expo and see how much they cost then I order supplies and set up the tank after that I go to another expo and actually buy it. but that's just my process. Where I live no one knows much about reptiles and I plan on working at the local pet store so I can educate people, the people who work there don' t know alot and one employee was afraid to handle a docile bearded dragon.
First off, great episode, guys. It makes me really happy to see more and more breeders advocating research before the purchase so animals aren't put in homes that can't care for them. As for HR669 I'm glad it failed, but,
ChosonKimchi, many animals have cause problems (look up the snake issue in the everglades for one example) and these problems stem from people who can't care for the pets. It all goes back to knowing what pets you can care for, so do the research so we don't get more HR669.
It is a great thing that HR-669 did not pass. The only problem though is that there will always be bills like it in the future. The government has already passed laws preventing some animals from coming to the United States. Everyone has to pull together to make sure nothing like HR-669 never passes.
I think that we are lucky that HR669 did not pass however, many people thought they cant do that, it wont happen or anything like that. But really it can. And we need to have more keepers stepping up and attempting to make a difference because this can and will most likely happen many more times in the future.
i think the hr669 case is a load of crap!!! Basically!
Also you guys had my crying with laughter cause there's a guy who owns a rep shop in my area who acts just like Cal did "Guys a knob" and is only in it for the money
i was in his shop a few weeks ago i left after 2 seconds cause all three of his large boa's were infested with MITES!!! He should be BANNED!!!!
Love the episode's keep em coming peace Brian & Co
hell with hr669 our government has alot more to worry about then ppl keeping animals. first off we in a financial shithole (sry if it offends) business after business are constantly closing down and seriously what harm ever came from owning animals? we provide quality care and it is a valuable, also educational experience and to ppl like us they are family
I worry that because the first draft of HR669 was so poorly constructed that it has now completely polarized the pet industry against any legislation to protect our native environment from invasive species. I believe that we, as a reptile community, need to be proactive with education about responsible pet ownership not only to prove to the government that we can be part of the solution, but to also show our commitment to protecting native plant and animal species.
Answer to Kels question of the week: in regards to the HR669 . Im in canada but I think that the law should not be passed , thousands of people have these animals and love them , where will they put them if they are told they can no longer have them, these animals would never survive in the wild its not fair to the animals or their loving owners.
lol great video like always... i have been noticing a ton of people r getting tegus and monitors lately.i hope trhey all have room for them when there adults.. especially kids who have both
100000STARZ!!!!!!! AMEN! I wish everyone buying a reptile was required to watch this video so they can see what can happen if you buy B4 you research! I spent days talking to somoene about gtps educating them on husbandry, they decided it was too much work & went out and got 2 red tails, & then came to me & asked how big will they get & I was like WHY didnt YOU ask BEFORE you bought!!!!! A week later he is already trying to sell them! GEES, i just want to scream at people's irresponsiblity!
do you guys breed your own feeder rats? I'm curious as to know how you guys feed your huge reptile collection. if you would buy the rats you would spent thousands of dollars just on food per week. if you do breed your own food i think it would be pretty cool for all of your fans like my self to see it.

they are rewriting the bill to change it up but still try to prevent it and from what i understand they are making a ab119 bill or something to eliminate all reptile shows and face toface reptile selling. i have had my snake for about 3 months and just bought 1 more male to breed so this bill would ruin my plans for breeding boa consrtictors
zwbreeding 2 years ago
HR 669 is a joke. not only will it not help the problem, it may just make more. as a younger citizen in the reptile community i have seen my fair share of illegal reptile deals go down. nothing too bad, a baby caiman here, a copperhead there, but overall nothing too extreme. if HR 669 is put into place i think our great hobby will become just another corner of the underground illegal world. look at prohibition, nothing stopped them from making alcohol, what should stop all of us from this hobby?

I think the next step is to re-do the bill, maybe so you have to get a license for the huge snakes like a burm, so people like you guys can keep them, but a person can't just go out and get one without having experience with snakes, and not knowing what they are doing.

hey brian. the new pinstripe i bought from u is doin really great. im really happy. thats the second snake i bought off u, its eating well and its friendly so i guess the tub he was in was good for him since hes so nice, thank u so much

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Do you think its moraly acceptable to keep thousands of animals in theese tiny tubs? snakes cant be inprisioned like that....they and ment to be roaming around and hunting for themslefs.

I totaly disagree with the HR669 bill, i mean i understand that some people buy "exotic" pets and shortly after decide they dont want them, but there are also people out there that are more then happy to take those pets off your hands, so why should we, the people who enjoy these pets be punished because other people would rather just release a pet into the wild?.....i ask you now..........
shenin01 2 years ago

Kudos.

Have you ever built a rack system? I have over 60 tanks in my room and it is a little space comsuming especially when I'm using a couple of ladders as makeshift racks. (sorry I had so much to say)
DaKing402 2 years ago
Here's another tip: if you have arboreal animals you can glue the pvc onto the wall of your aquarium/tank or use velcro too hold it in place. Then you have a dish that sits off the ground making it easier for the animal to eat. I use this especially with my giant day geckos and crested geckos, However some snakes like it too. For example one of my tree boas loves to have a hanging water dish and even my ball python loves to climb and have a suspended dish.
DaKing402 2 years ago
It's good you guys did an episode like this. A lot of people don't do any research before they buy and end up with an animal that is too big or too needy for them. The green iguana is the most commonly mistaken pet and there seems like there is a never ending supply of iguanas that people couldn't care for.

hey Brian good vid as always :)

U can't punish a group of people just because a few were breaking the law.

Another awesome show guys!!!! Personally, I dont think it'll pass, it's just too ridiculous
vl2023 2 years ago
I think that although HR669 has a good reason to be in place, but I also find it almost unnecessary. Invasive species aren't so much of a threat to the point where foreign animals actually have to be banned. Not to mention if the law were passed, companies that depend on animals and animal products would be struggling considerably more, and with the economy how it is, many might go out of business.

I know not everyone will agree.
tmmpinmike 2 years ago
With only southern Fl and Tx and possibly CA affected, why make it a blanket ban across the entire US?
NineCatsz 2 years ago
It was invasive animals. I think it is the Mississippi river that has the flying fish (can't remember their actual name off top of my head). They are over running the river in certain areas now, so do you just stop it after it already happened? Tagging would hold people accountable for their animals. Accountability would help, it may not stop it but people may think twice.
tmmpinmike 2 years ago
Those "flying fish" weren't released pets so tagging isn't going to help anything.
Who is going to tag and keep track of all these animals? When you have 600 eggs incubating, how are you going to tag all of those?
It's a bill made by animal rights activists aimed at stopping the ownership of pets. You see, these activists believe that a rat's life is equal to a human's life and keeping a rat in a cage is as cruel as if you kept your kid in a cage.
NineCatsz 2 years ago
I agree with you on the animal rights activists trying to stop us from owning animals. I do however feel something needs to be done. If we continue to do nothing while they keep pushing we will all lose our rights of owning animals. Tagging is one option, while it may be hard to keep up with it is something that we could do to keep the animals we want. If you got a better idea I would love to hear it. I don't think tagging is the answer but maybe something to build on.

Vote for democrats and you will get more HR669 type crap.
kohr5 2 years ago
While I will admit that some "exotic" species need regulation, the government should really push controlling the cat and dog populations before reptiles and other exotics. Those animals are about a thousand times more ecologically-damaging than reptiles, birds, rodents, and fish will ever be on the whole. The people in power need to get over their bias against owning any animal that you can't find in a children's coloring book.

When I want a pet I look on the internet, if I plan on getting it I get book then go to an expo and see how much they cost then I order supplies and set up the tank after that I go to another expo and actually buy it. but that's just my process. Where I live no one knows much about reptiles and I plan on working at the local pet store so I can educate people, the people who work there don' t know alot and one employee was afraid to handle a docile bearded dragon.
redd142007 2 years ago

Everyone has to pull together to make sure nothing like HR-669 never passes.
iamplified 2 years ago
I think that we are lucky that HR669 did not pass however, many people thought they cant do that, it wont happen or anything like that. But really it can. And we need to have more keepers stepping up and attempting to make a difference because this can and will most likely happen many more times in the future.

hell with hr669 our government has alot more to worry about then ppl keeping animals. first off we in a financial shithole (sry if it offends) business after business are constantly closing down and seriously what harm ever came from owning animals? we provide quality care and it is a valuable, also educational experience and to ppl like us they are family
ChosonKimchi 2 years ago
