The annoying thing about this game is got to be the amount of traps located throughout the level. The way to conquer this game is to play through the game with the cheating option enabled remembering where most of the traps are so you can play through the game without cheating having the advantage of knowing where everything is positioned.
That way you could probably conquer this beast of a game.
This game is monstrous. Contrast it with a modern retro style game like VVVVVV. That is really damn hard, but it has checkpoints and infinite lives.
What took game designers so long to realise that forcing you to repeat the same parts of a game that you've already beaten was an astonishingly bad game design choice?
I think you missed the point of this game. The beauty of it was that you had to learn the levels and the sequence of moves you had to make in order to get through them. Memorising this was a challenge that took concentration, but once mastered it felt great to be able to go through the levels without ever dying. Then you felt like the real Rick Dangerous, running and jumping through a sequence of terrifying traps without any of them catching you.
Oh I always liked the game, I used to play it all the time :)
But even so, I don't think one can deny that this is rather poor game design - especially since you were forced to start over from scratch every time you ran out of lives.
This was much improved in the sequel where you could practice most of the levels.
When I was bought this game from a company called Software + it had the option to pick which country/level you wanted to do. Often on the emulators I don't get this option
This game is a classic but your memory has to be spot on, it is very infuriating! Great video too
The key of this game is to anticipate traps like in a real life exploration,( inspired: I.Jones movie). Most of them can be avoided after minutes when you start to understand the game mechanics, even if you do not know where they are. After all, all the games are based on trying and error, and most of the traps in this video are really easy to avoid. There are rules when climbing ladders, when you approach walls...the worst parts is when you fall to a non seen and unknown area.Nice video BTW!
This game is probably the reason I don't trust anything in life lol
I'd love to see this get released on XBLA, wiiware and whatever it is the PS3 has although I can see a lot of the kiddies complaining that its too hard lol
I have a lot of these traps memorized still, whenever I sit down to play this game nowadays I know where most of the traps are going to be (not all of them though, especially later in the game more problems occur), ah memories. :)
They should release this on xbox live, psn or virtual console so the younger generation can give it a go. :)
IMO, if you took away the death traps, all that would remain would be a mediocre platformer that nobody remembers. I also think it's fun memorizing where all the traps are, though the game should have given you more or infinite lives, or a way to continue from each level or whatever..
What do you mean? A lot of people remember this. I agree that infinite lives helps a lot in this because earlier games were designed to be nigh impossible.
Yes, I have fond memories of playing this game and remember it well. I'm saying that without the death traps, RD would be 'just another Amiga platform game'. I'm glad they put them in, I think it makes it more fun. My fav is the sequel, really love the graphics and level design on that one, even if it is 'unorthodox' (and basically a precursor to the maso-core games of today, which are not 'badly designed' but simply have a different design brief to traditional games)
Regarding your opening comments, I'm somewhat split down the middle.
Rick Dangerous is a fun game and all (as is the sequel) but it's partially due to the ridiculous deathtraps.
There are some where you cannot help but laugh. Like in this video, the one at 1:52. It made me laugh when I played the game proper and it makes me laugh to this day.
Brilliant vid - brings back some painful memories back in the Amiga days. A totally unfair game, but the comedy deaths and the 'one more go / I'm not letting this bastard beat me' elements made it a classic.
In all fairness you start to see a pattern to the traps, you KNOW after a while that there's a strong possibility of a trap being in a certain spot, but of course there are the tough 1s ull never guess XD
all of those are not unfair, there are extra platforms so if you die once unfairly, you probably start to being caredul and choosing between two routes/platforms. but drop death are unfair, but the game would be far too easy, a guess without them.
Oh, that's easy, I don't know what the technical definition of techno is.
It's like how people can tell the difference between different types of jeeps. Where as they all just look like cars to me. Usually the only difference I can tell is the color but other people could probably look at one and tell you the make and model.
Well there is that midi peace at the start, then there is the other thing. It starts with an annoying winy sound and then there are some drums and I think a guitar of some sort. Then there's another winy slower middle bit. I turned off the sound after that.
I...I can't believe...This game...I'm glad I never played this. I would never stop saying "FUCK!", and hitting something. Worst game designing, ever. You, laffer35, are an epic man for playing through this enough to gather footage, to put on YouTube. You deserve an award, or a strong drink. Or possibly drugs, after such a horrendous experience. XD
This game was responsible for a few childhood tantrums from me. I think the hilarious death animation and 'waaaaaah' took the edge off the unfairness a little though.
I always liked this trial-and-error gameplay, though it can be quite frustrating at times. But the sequel, RICK DANGEROUS 2, still is one of my all time favorite platformers!
What amaze me is that while this game can be hard, the sticking factor and game pleasure is that each time you're going thru a trap, you want to see what you have to defeat next. Unfair means that you have failed to understand the trap mecanism. you f**k on joystick/pad, you loose ! You play well and cleverly, you pass ! It's as simple as that.
Hehe, you're describing the game as it should have been, not as it is.
There are of course traps in the game that you can avoid - but the majority of them are very cheap and can only be avoided by either luck or memorization.
This is the aspect of the game I find poorly designed - ideally, a game should only depend on skill. This game depends far too much on trial and error.
However, I still love it :D It's very addictive and lots of fun.
i question is!! if anyone in the all word completed it??? with this stupid deaths!!! i give it a try on those days.. didt past from 2 hours... and giveup!! is just anoyng!!!
Not many of them can actually be seen, as they're invisible. But there are some in the video where you should be able to predict a trap based on what you've seen up to that point... but not many. Most of them are totally unfair :D
