Is Alex Chilton singing backup? Man, those guys sounded so f-ing good together! Anything stemming from Big Star should be in everyone's music collection. I hear their influence in music everyday.
From what I understand, Bell and Chilton really did make an attempt to make Beatles type pop in Memphis and I believe that the results are as good as any group who walked down that same path. This song by Bell is really good, confessional, haunting, the sad b@st)d song... helluva song writer.
@ronoman88 No, you missed my point...I was implying that the 1st Big Star LP had more Chris Bell influence and the songs on his "solo" LP show that...and yes, the pure classic pop songs of Big Star's first 2 LPs make it seen like you heard it before...
I still think his best is "Look Up", which isn't anywhere on YouTube.

You must also hear This Mortal Coil's cover of this, as a female duet. They were on the 4AD record label.

Alex Chilton on this record, too.

What a heartbreakinly beautiful song. Chis Bell is a forgotten genius. It's a shame he only recorded a small amount of music.

I'm more familiar with the Kim Deal/ Juliana Hatfield version that was done under the This Mortal Coil collective.
I do like this, the original, a lot. It's very different to what I'm used to!

@pandaeyes42 - it's actually Kim Deal and Tanya Donnelly. :)

Chris you're gone a long time and it still resonates.
Now Alex you're gone and that kills whats left of Big Star.
Jody your the best. Hamel you were in a great group.

Wonder who influenced the sound of that 1st Big Star album?
potaluca 1 year ago
@potaluca The Beatles Listen for the chord changes in most of their songs. Major 7th's, minor 5th's. They are the purest pop songs ever.
