Mr. Dejohnette is one of my all time favorites! his sound is so dry! Even the drums are dry. And he's so loose and free! It inspires me to just relax and have fun feeling the music!
@sparerib78 Agree totally - The dry sound gives you less places to hide - everything has to be Spot-on and Jack does it as good as anyone else out there.
The fact that he is using the same kit that i use just makes this video better and it also tells me that i shoulda probably just sell it because i will never be able to do this on it :/
I'm curious about something. At 1:11 the snares get turned off but I don't see him throw em off, unless he hit the throw-off w/a stick. I'm wondering if it happened by accident. Either way he's still a badass. The only reason I bring it up is b/c he starts the solo w/the snares off then turn them on. So I'm wondering if he wanted the snares off at 1:11. None of this really matters. I'm just curious. Any thoughts on the subject?
@cuthbertallgood711 It's a 1st series Jack DeJohnette Encore 22" mini-bell ride. The original series was fully lathed both sides, the present series is unlathed (I believe). Mine had two rivets. Nice smoky jazz cymbal with a decent crash sound; great in a low volume situation.
jack is so bad ass......hes been using a 16 BASS DRUM FOR YEARS.....THERE ARE A TON OF GREAT SOLOS, AND GREAT DRUMMING ON EVERYTHING HE PLAYS, HE PLAYS PIANO JUST AS WELL......
@Derjumba2forever That's kinda what I thought. I just wrote a long comment about his snares coming off at 1:11 and how I didn't see him turn them off. I guess I should've read some more of the comments before posting my comment. Personally, I wouldn't want a snare drum where the snares turn off b/c I'm hitting too hard. What does that say about Sonor? Hmmm...
@drewper73 yeah definitely. also depends on the tension. if theyre semi loose an he gives it a good wack theyre coming off for sure. other than that, not many good things about sonor. take a dw any day
A true genius who never got the credit he deserved, unfortunately being in the same company as the fabulous Tony Williams and Billy Cobham.
Jack is a master, much more tha just a "Tony Williams-light" player!
Of course when we have been regaled throughout drumming history by genius as diverse as Baby Dodds, Mickey Roker, Mel Lewis, and Buddy Rich, I suppose it is easy to be "overlooked".
Love it. One of my favorite albums ever is Christian McBride, Number 2 Express. Jack is amazing on it. I typically like Sonor drums but that snare drum turning itself off at 0:27, and at 1:09 is not cool.
For those who don't know: Dejohnette was one of the drummers on Bitches Brew, in other words he was one of the creators of jazz-fusion drumming. In addition listen to the work he did with Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Herbie, Dave Holland among others. Listen to his playing on jackie McCleans "Demon Dance" album. Incredible. Mr DeJohnette is a true master. Highly musical and a groove master.
My dad worked at a radio station back in the 70's and brought home a promo copy of this cat I'd never heard of. The album is "Supertrios" and the cat is McCoy Tyner. Double album with Ron and Tony paired up on one disc, while Eddie and Jack are paired up on the other. Incredible stuff!
@hinchman12 Actually I believe that is Sonor's Jungle kit- which would have a 16" bass (the Jungle kit has a 16x16 bass). I could be wrong, and Jack does often use an 18" bass.
@whvaugn yeah now that i look at it yes it's a 16". i've always wanted a hipgig set or this jungle kit here. i love the sounds you get with smaller drums, so much brighter and tight :)
he has his signature black heads that aquarian provides. but i am not sure that they are being used in this particular clip. sound great though. i picked some up the other day.
This guy is so so so so good, but i hate the sound of his drums and cymbals it might just be because this is old and I'm used to hearing new cymbals and kits but i hate the sound of his drums and his cymbals, but none the less he is an amazing drummer and deserves to have his hand shaken by jesus
@tenormadness - drum size DOES matter! In the end music is all about SOUND. For example, the sound John Bonham created couldn't be achieved on a kit with an 18" kick, small toms and a piccolo snare. Similarly, if you'd have tried to play in a delicate jazz setting, or tight funk, with his kit size and sound it would be ridiculous. Jack's thing has always revolved around smaller drums, especially a smaller kick, more tightly tuned.
@mafietto Piccolo snare. Basically a normal snare, only it's 13" or smaller and not deeper than around 4", cranked up very tight. They're mostly made of metal, because they're supposed to sound dry and snappy, not warm and pleasant, like some 'regular' snare drums.
You can also play them as your main snare drum, which is what I do.
@boilingbubbles this is it. just because its not your typical flashy "hey look how many notes i cant hit and how many fancy stick twirls and crossovers i can dobetween my toms and cymbals to show off" doesnt mean its not a solo. dejohnette is above all that childish stuff, he just wants to make his musical expression to the future generations of this great instrument.
@rhythmninja0987 haha you take me for the opposite person I am. I certainly hear the intro to a solo, but the whole time it just sounds like he is trying to get a feel for the kit and not actually using it, if you know what I mean. Until about 2:30.
Fucking incredible.. i love when he played with Methany. One of my favorite albums by Pat. Damn, if you're not into this video then why bother commenting? Good for everyone that doesn't like it.. don't fucking talk about it.
I don't go searching for shitty Travis Barker solo's just so I can comment on how much I don't like it.. doesn't make sense to me but then again I'm stoned out of my mind.
@mauproj Sorry, but that can't be a SQ2 - in 1997 Jack used a Designer Set from Sonor. In that time it was the most exclusive and most expensive Set of Sonor. The SQ2 -production startet in 2001 or 2002

Secondly, it's a 16" BASS DRUM, which is actually a converted floor tom- check the triple flanged hoops, which are used often on toms and snare but never on bass drums.
Proof that you don't need super expensive gear to sound great, just immense talent....
Also, check out the black badges on each of the drums. Designer series had silver badges with a script D; the cheap looking black badges were used on the Sonic Plus and no their high end models...
De Johnette is just about the best contemporary jazz drummer, at least as far as I can tell. He has a terrific technique, AND he came to the drums after first playing piano:) --
@kettle18 Oh, I LOVED Buddy's work. Even heard him live twice. But he passed away some time ago. When I said "contemporary," I also meant "living." Sorry, should have made that clear:) --
also, i believe that bastard travis barker has successfully brainwashed every aspiring kid drummer, hence all the ridiculous comments made by thousands of youtube users, in very different drumming videos by several famous and fantastic drummers...congratulations Barker, you've officially achieved Super Douchebag Status...anyone mentions that bastards name again in any other video i watch, i think i will scream so loud that satan himself will hear me ! please stop the travis barker comments !

I play with his signature sticks, they really bring out your chops, but they bust up way to easily. Vic Firth needs to make some with nylon tips and I'll be a happy camper :D
@TasmarCompany nope, that's coming from an overhead mic, a snare mic, and a bass drum mic that are clearly visible. You can pick up a kit very well with just a bass drum mic and overheads!
something that separates people like this guy, from a lot of newer drummers or people that would "appear" to have chops...is the look on his face. the guy is FEELING that shit, and it's coming from a different place, rather than just trying to impress a crowd.
@amusingisthedawn not trying to be a dick but it looks like he's squeezing out a turd, he seems very tense during this. PS this guys bass feathering is just amazing!
cymbals are not my preference either however granted he is a jazz drummer they are just what the music he plays calls for. something dry low sustain and low projection
how he do dat?

something that separates people like this guy, from a lot of newer drummers or people that would "appear" to have chops...is the look on his face. the guy is FEELING that shit, and it's coming from a different place, rather than just trying to impress a crowd.

@amusingisthedawn not trying to be a dick but it looks like he's squeezing out a turd, he seems very tense during this. PS this guys bass feathering is just amazing!

I like how you can hear the clarity of the notes - even when he's doing all those fast combinations of rolls.
AMAZING.

cymbals are not my preference either however granted he is a jazz drummer they are just what the music he plays calls for. something dry low sustain and low projection

If you can play it the exact same way then its boring, hence why all of travis barkers videos are boring
