  • how he do dat?

  • This video is a favorite on Philippines

  • A Living Legend Jack DeJohnette is one of the Greatest Drummers to ever sit behind the kit.

    He has no equal.

  • This man seriously knows what he is doing!!

  • Mr. Dejohnette is one of my all time favorites! his sound is so dry! Even the drums are dry. And he's so loose and free! It inspires me to just relax and have fun feeling the music!

  • @sparerib78 Agree totally - The dry sound gives you less places to hide - everything has to be Spot-on and Jack does it as good as anyone else out there.

  • Absolutely brilliant. The technique and groove that Jack DeJohnette displays in his drumming is flawless.

  • Jack holds his stick almost at the end but still has such control. So bloody awesome

  • IDOL<3

  • is that bass drum a converted floor tom?

  • @brandonmunro I think he's just a really big guy :D

  • @brandonmunro I doubt it, but it sure looks like it lol

  • 30 who havenever picked up drum sticks

  • you cheat =D

  • god he gets the roundest, warmest sounds out of his kits

  • EL SOLO DE BATA CON MENOS CORAZON Q ESCUCHE JAMAS!

  • what i really like is the 18 inches (maybe) bass drum

  • @METALERO31192 Nope 16"

  • @drums4694 gorgeous!!!!!

  • four piece?? get your math straight

  • holy cow. this was pretty good

  • what a warm touch he has

  • The fact that he is using the same kit that i use just makes this video better and it also tells me that i shoulda probably just sell it because i will never be able to do this on it :/

  • @EvanGri

Or people who say stuff like "Travis Barker is better"

  • He is THE Master.

  • Hey Sonor, work on the snare strainer,

  • could someone tell me what that ride is?

  • @PippoBlues93 i thinkk its a splash, idk soundss good tho.

  • @PippoBlues93 Sabian DeJohnette's Signature Encore Ride, 20".

  • wow that is really awesome

  • Even his watch comes undone

  • who the hell brought that snare???

  • This kit sounds godly

  • @Laurenan69 With Jack on it ;) haha

  • This guy played for Miles. Oh yeah, that's right.

  • art.

    .haha.

  • I'm curious about something. At 1:11 the snares get turned off but I don't see him throw em off, unless he hit the throw-off w/a stick. I'm wondering if it happened by accident. Either way he's still a badass. The only reason I bring it up is b/c he starts the solo w/the snares off then turn them on. So I'm wondering if he wanted the snares off at 1:11. None of this really matters. I'm just curious. Any thoughts on the subject?

  • @drewper73 yea and it happened at :29 too...

  • AWESOME RIDE CYMBAL.

  • what the...

  • I like the fact that he doesn't have a drumset that takes up the entire stage

  • @MrFootball102 In this performance yes. Usually however, Jack's set is ...

  • 1:02 ..... >.>

  • I have that exact model ride if any one is interested.

  • @lenniethedogsparty Give it to me!

  • @lileulileu Sorry, man - just sold it.

  • @lenniethedogsparty

    I'm so interested.

  • @lenniethedogsparty Which model is it?

  • @cuthbertallgood711 It's a 1st series Jack DeJohnette Encore 22" mini-bell ride. The original series was fully lathed both sides, the present series is unlathed (I believe). Mine had two rivets. Nice smoky jazz cymbal with a decent crash sound; great in a low volume situation.

  • jack is so bad ass......hes been using a 16 BASS DRUM FOR YEARS.....THERE ARE A TON OF GREAT SOLOS, AND GREAT DRUMMING ON EVERYTHING HE PLAYS, HE PLAYS PIANO JUST AS WELL......

  • @fleetwoodbrawm i use a 16.. no big deal.. but i do agree with the fact that jack is a fucking badass

  • snares keep coming off because hes hitting so hard haha

  • @Derjumba2forever That's kinda what I thought. I just wrote a long comment about his snares coming off at 1:11 and how I didn't see him turn them off. I guess I should've read some more of the comments before posting my comment. Personally, I wouldn't want a snare drum where the snares turn off b/c I'm hitting too hard. What does that say about Sonor? Hmmm...

  • @drewper73 yeah definitely. also depends on the tension. if theyre semi loose an he gives it a good wack theyre coming off for sure. other than that, not many good things about sonor. take a dw any day

  • @Derjumba2forever You don't like sonor ?

  • @drewper73

dude, this video is from 1997...

  • Jack DeJohnette my favorite jazz drummer!

  • Jesus Christ he's good.

  • Amazing technique and musicality!

A true genius who never got the credit he deserved, unfortunately being in the same company as the fabulous Tony Williams and Billy Cobham.

Jack is a master, much more tha just a "Tony Williams-light" player!

Of course when we have been regaled throughout drumming history by genius as diverse as Baby Dodds, Mickey Roker, Mel Lewis, and Buddy Rich, I suppose it is easy to be "overlooked".

    Undeservedly so!

    Great post; thanks for sharing!

  • Love his kit. Really bright/clear sound

  • @Offdrive3

Me too. Toms/bass seem small-ish in size but surprisingly deep

  • @BrianGValentine Agreed. Sounds crazy good

  • Jack be nimble Jack be quick...

  • Love it. One of my favorite albums ever is Christian McBride, Number 2 Express. Jack is amazing on it. I typically like Sonor drums but that snare drum turning itself off at 0:27, and at 1:09 is not cool.

  • I saw him live this evening LIVE playing JACK JOHNSON by Miles Davis. 10/10!

  • 4 piece? 2 Snares 2 Toms 1 Kick = 5 piece or the auxsnare or what that is doenst count?

  • this is jack or the drummer of lightning bolt????ahahahah

  • JACK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I just saw him in a club and he had a kit with about 8 toms and 11 cymbals. I much prefer him on a four piece.

  • For those who don't know: Dejohnette was one of the drummers on Bitches Brew, in other words he was one of the creators of jazz-fusion drumming. In addition listen to the work he did with Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Herbie, Dave Holland among others. Listen to his playing on jackie McCleans "Demon Dance" album. Incredible. Mr DeJohnette is a true master. Highly musical and a groove master.

  • grand pa is still doing gooooooood !!!!!

  • who needs a 110 piece kit? seriously!

  • @ZanderPodraza BOZZIO!

  • ugh... so spastic. My pal Cooper Grosscup would knock this guys ears off. He grooves like a mother fucker.

  • @AveryDanger It's only sound man,not something incredible.

  • @TheLuotutin I don't know what on earth is more incredible than sound.

  • Reminds me Lister from the Red Dwarf...

  • Awesome I want that kick drum, how could you dislike this??????

  • that kit sounds so amazing. love that 18'' kick

  • @hinchman12 Actually I believe that is Sonor's Jungle kit- which would have a 16" bass (the Jungle kit has a 16x16 bass). I could be wrong, and Jack does often use an 18" bass.

  • @whvaugn yeah now that i look at it yes it's a 16". i've always wanted a hipgig set or this jungle kit here. i love the sounds you get with smaller drums, so much brighter and tight :)

  • Miles thought he was good.

  • what kind of heads is he using?

  • he has his signature black heads that aquarian provides. but i am not sure that they are being used in this particular clip. sound great though. i picked some up the other day.

  • This guy is so so so so good, but i hate the sound of his drums and cymbals it might just be because this is old and I'm used to hearing new cymbals and kits but i hate the sound of his drums and his cymbals, but none the less he is an amazing drummer and deserves to have his hand shaken by jesus

  • He was 13 years ago a genious, he's still today!

  • I love that guy

  • @tenormadness - drum size DOES matter! In the end music is all about SOUND. For example, the sound John Bonham created couldn't be achieved on a kit with an 18" kick, small toms and a piccolo snare. Similarly, if you'd have tried to play in a delicate jazz setting, or tight funk, with his kit size and sound it would be ridiculous. Jack's thing has always revolved around smaller drums, especially a smaller kick, more tightly tuned.

  • hahahaha, so intense his watch came undone

  • since when did kit size matter? it's all about the MUSIC....the story they tell while playing

  • wtf! imagine what he can do with a bigger kit

  • what is that kind of snaredrum on his left side??

  • @mafietto Piccolo snare. Basically a normal snare, only it's 13" or smaller and not deeper than around 4", cranked up very tight. They're mostly made of metal, because they're supposed to sound dry and snappy, not warm and pleasant, like some 'regular' snare drums.

You can also play them as your main snare drum, which is what I do.

    Hope this helps!

  • @mafietto it's a sonor jungle snare : )

  • just think of all the rudiments hes using :O:O:O

  • damn...that's so dry, it just amazes me

  • where is the solo?

  • @boilingbubbles this is it. just because its not your typical flashy "hey look how many notes i cant hit and how many fancy stick twirls and crossovers i can dobetween my toms and cymbals to show off" doesnt mean its not a solo. dejohnette is above all that childish stuff, he just wants to make his musical expression to the future generations of this great instrument.

  • @rhythmninja0987 haha you take me for the opposite person I am. I certainly hear the intro to a solo, but the whole time it just sounds like he is trying to get a feel for the kit and not actually using it, if you know what I mean. Until about 2:30.

  • Fucking incredible.. i love when he played with Methany. One of my favorite albums by Pat. Damn, if you're not into this video then why bother commenting? Good for everyone that doesn't like it.. don't fucking talk about it.

I don't go searching for shitty Travis Barker solo's just so I can comment on how much I don't like it.. doesn't make sense to me but then again I'm stoned out of my mind.

  • who the fuck could dislike this!!!

  • @MrDownbeat people who just don't understand

  • my last name is dejohnette!

  • i wish i could be as casual as him with my rolls

  • Great hi-hat

  • Rock drummers play a repeated simple pattern. They are loud though, I guess.

Why would somebody who likes dance music be puting Jack Dejohnette in the search engine of youtube?

  • What size of ride is this 20"? Also tom sizes?

  • @JazzPoker " 22" mini cup ride jack dejohnette sabian encore signature and Sonor jungle set 16b 10t 14 ft

  • darn, how fast is his fingers?

  • He's a great drummer but his sticks are even greater haha

  • He's a great drummer but his sticks are even greater haha

  • Which poor kid did Jack steal that kit from?

  • @ryder187mac

this set is the noblest and most expensive of Sonor (SQ2). Don't you hear that?

  • @mauproj It sounds great but it looks kinda tiny, he's towering over it :p what I meant with my comment

  • @mauproj Sorry, but that can't be a SQ2 - in 1997 Jack used a Designer Set from Sonor. In that time it was the most exclusive and most expensive Set of Sonor. The SQ2 -production startet in 2001 or 2002

  • @MrMaxonsax

You are right, but: " Designer Drums" don't exist anymore; "SQ2" is the new Name. same technology, same design, but a new name. - I play Designer (the Set is 12 years old), and i wood never change. (Sorry, english is not my language)

  • Comment removed

  • @mauproj

Actually, it's a Sonor "Jungle Kit," which was based off the Sonic Plus series of birch drums from the 90's (I played the same kit for a while). The accent snare is the "jingle snare" that came with that kit.

Secondly, it's a 16" BASS DRUM, which is actually a converted floor tom- check the triple flanged hoops, which are used often on toms and snare but never on bass drums.

Proof that you don't need super expensive gear to sound great, just immense talent....

  • @TonyBono

Also, check out the black badges on each of the drums. Designer series had silver badges with a script D; the cheap looking black badges were used on the Sonic Plus and no their high end models...

  • them drum heads are mad

  • i live the sound of these BLACK EVANS drum heads... cool

  • Well, in fact he never stopped playing piano, and composing with it. When he started, he used to practice 4 hours piano and 4 hours drums a day.

  • what drum heads are those?! they sound great!

  • Happy Birthday Jack!!!!!!

  • Nice Jack DeJohnette! You're OK, still getting better! Check out my drum vid, to learn some tricks!

  • @ElJazz93 HA!

  • 14 idiots ...

  • De Johnette is just about the best contemporary jazz drummer, at least as far as I can tell. He has a terrific technique, AND he came to the drums after first playing piano:) --

  • @stevevandien And Buddy Rich?

  • @kettle18 Oh, I LOVED Buddy's work. Even heard him live twice. But he passed away some time ago. When I said "contemporary," I also meant "living." Sorry, should have made that clear:) --

  • nice to see a solo piece on a small kit for once!

  • I want that fuckin' kit so bad...

  • would it be wrong of me to say that jack and elvin are both captains of the SS fuckin awesome

  • @Grillmouth LMAO !! NICE WAY OF PUTTING IT !!

  • @Grillmouth love it and yes totally valid

  • @Grillmouth SS?

  • also, i believe that bastard travis barker has successfully brainwashed every aspiring kid drummer, hence all the ridiculous comments made by thousands of youtube users, in very different drumming videos by several famous and fantastic drummers...congratulations Barker, you've officially achieved Super Douchebag Status...anyone mentions that bastards name again in any other video i watch, i think i will scream so loud that satan himself will hear me ! please stop the travis barker comments !

  • i love jack, i just wished he used good old remo heads instead of crummy evans..

  • @blica1

Actually, he uses his signature heads from Aquarian. Personally, I prefer both Aquarian and Evans to Remo, but we all have different tastes. That's what makes the concept of sound so exciting. :)

  • @blica1 those are jacks custom line of drum heads your talking about, and there made by aquarian not evans

  • wow

  • small kit, big dick...?

  • jazz drum solos are just the best...

  • If you have strong double strokes than you can pull off a drum solo, waking up from sleep and,if you still remember your first rudiment..add them up and you would have a safe but a good solo.

  • i concur TLPS

  • @dachamp07 - Did you just compare Jack DeJohnette to Travis Barker? What is the point?.....really!

    @TheLastPictureShow - I couldnt agree more!

  • I play with his signature sticks, they really bring out your chops, but they bust up way to easily. Vic Firth needs to make some with nylon tips and I'll be a happy camper :D

  • i prefer this one.

  • one word... finesse.

  • Sorry if this has already been asked, but how the hell does he turn the snare off without stopping?!

  • Good question. Happens at 1:12

  • @rhizomatical I really think he is all trigg...

No mic' on toms etc... It's really strange for a jazz-player, but that's the only way to do that...

  • @TasmarCompany nope, that's coming from an overhead mic, a snare mic, and a bass drum mic that are clearly visible. You can pick up a kit very well with just a bass drum mic and overheads!

  • I love how he got it done on that tiny kit.

  • sabian -kinda- begginings

  • something that separates people like this guy, from a lot of newer drummers or people that would "appear" to have chops...is the look on his face. the guy is FEELING that shit, and it's coming from a different place, rather than just trying to impress a crowd.

  • @amusingisthedawn not trying to be a dick but it looks like he's squeezing out a turd, he seems very tense during this. PS this guys bass feathering is just amazing!

  • @amusingisthedawn Ah,you cannot see a person interpretinge man...Too many signals...

  • ooohhhhhhh shittttttttt cmo toca el grone por favorrrrrrrrrrrr ultra velocity.

  • I like how you can hear the clarity of the notes - even when he's doing all those fast combinations of rolls.

    AMAZING.

  • which heads is he using? ebony ?

  • @martinlentini Aquarian Jack Dejohnette signature heads.

  • cymbals are not my preference either however granted he is a jazz drummer they are just what the music he plays calls for. something dry low sustain and low projection

  • Jack is the man....

  • amazing

  • he plays sooo awesome, but i really DON'T like this cymbals...

  • Yeah, they're too dry with no resonance.

    But man is he smokin'!

  • excelente

  • if this was in 1997, can we still consider it modern drummer?

  • all of jack's shit is eternal

  • DeJohnette is clearly a gifted drummer, and this definitely is not a boring solo.

  • this are stylish

  • then ur obviously not that skilled at drumming!

  • If you can play it the exact same way then its boring, hence why all of travis barkers videos are boring

  • @dachamp07 Yeah, Travis B can go eat a bag of dicks :P

  • well that was boring

  • I suppose you think travis barker is better?
