Mixes well with big daddy kane - on a bugged tip. heard it in a dj yoda mix, hes synched it to at the pause at 0:20 kane goes "lights, camera... action!" it fits so well
This is just a quick sit down and jam. But I believe the guitar chords are (just listen for the rhythm):
Standard Tuning - key of e minor
Intro - emin7, DMaj, CMaj, bmin7, emin7
Verse - emin7, amin7, B7, emin7, B7, emin7
You're really gonna have to play around with the note voicings to get a sound even remotely close to a great full band arrangement like Pate did though :)
P.S. If you're wanting the chords for the Jay-Z version, they're all the same, but a half-step lower.
Johnny Pate is just kicking all kinds of ass in this song. Probably why it gets sampled and covered so much - the best cover of this I've heard was done using violin and turntables.
@MurderousDonky dude what the fuck is wrong with you? seriously.. ok listen, type "hip hop samples" in youtube and listen to how many hip hop songs have taken samples from other old songs, you frikin blind idiot
@MurderousDonky OR, if you actually ever bought a cd rather than download an mp3 for free, you can open Jay-Z booklet and plainly see "Sample Taken From Johnny Pate - Shaft in Africa " written inside it..

Nice Video! With the stills it gives a flavour of the film. Oh yeah, The Cookie Crew sampled the intro for 'Born this way (let's dance)' in 1989!!

the cookie crew used this for "born this way (1988) jay-z show em what you got, digital underground gutfest "89".
beyo2120 2 years ago
yeah Cookie Crew's song used the soprano sax part.
Johnny Pate is an incredible arranger and this one of
the FUNKIEST and HARDEST pieces from 70's film.
That drum sound is envious and Wurlitzer sit so nice in the mix and you can tell the horn section is having FUN.
Damnit what a groove !
