  • It is spear form. Very nice too!

  • Very interesting. It looks a lot like a Wing Chun pole I once knew.

  • Looks more like a spear form

  • @super1commenter yes it would if had a point, but without point it is a staff.

  • @TheZhongzheng

I am not saying that the weapon is a spear, but the form the master was performing seems more likely to be a form meant for a spear because it has many stabs, but little whacks, also, most tai chi staff form uses a short staff instead of one that is that long

  • @super1commenter It is the Wudang spear form that I also practice, with a tip it is spear form and without it is staff form. The form does involves a lot of stabs.I am told the tip was removed after a horrible training accident where one of the Yang family members were killed so you are more than likely correct in your observation. Cheers

  • @super1commenter Also I would like to say that a real Tai Chi staff form would involve an 8 foot or more pole and not a short staff as you suggest. Cheers

  • @TheZhongzheng Thanks. So it is confirmed that this is a spear form. It is a spear form PERFORMED with a STAFF.

  • @super1commenter t is a staff form. A staff uses one end only to defend and strike. A spear uses both ends to defend and strike. A staff is longer than a spear. A staff uses only one end because the weapon is long, therefore, not as convenient as a shorter spear which can switch ends easily. Sifu Cheng called this a staff form when he taught me, but later called it spear form for an unknown reason.

  • @georgehsliew For your information, if you are very precise, the weapons seen in the above video is not a staff, a more suitable term could be a long staff, or a "gan." A staff is around the height of a person, but a long staff is longer. You are correct that a LONG staff form only uses one end to attack or defense, but a NORMAL staff form uses both ends. Also, a good spear form also uses both ends, but uses the end with the tip more often. By the way, a spear is longer than a staff.

  • @super1commenter It is taught now as a spear form, the length varies from 6-9 foot which depends to an extent on the height of the practitioner. For demos the spear usually has a metal head and traditionally a piece of red cloth attached to where the head is joined to the body. In our system we use it with or without tip . Master Cheng did indeed refer to it as a staff form but in his book he calls it a spear form. Master Dan Docherty refers to it as spear also.

  • @super1commenter the weapon is being used as a spear, even with a wooden weapon it is usually tapered at the end. We often use a staff in practice as is safer. Cheers

  • @georgehsliew Maybe, "staff" is not good translation. "gan" is a better translation as it shows in the Chinese characters title.

  • beautifully done my friend!

  • Thanks.

  • @TheZhongzheng You may post your demo video response.

  • @georgehsliew I have but It's not here lol....

  • @TheZhongzheng Will you try again?

  • @georgehsliew Ok it's only an application for the Wudang spear let me know if get it . Cheers

  • @TheZhongzheng actually, I've received request of approval of the response from the YouTube services. But when I clicked into my inbox, I could't find the request.

  • @georgehsliew I see you have removed the vd. No worries!

  • @TheZhongzheng I have no idea. Could be a mistake.

  • It's really supposed to be a bladed-tip on the staff... ie a spear... ;)

Wudang Tai Chi Chuan also uses Sabre and sword.

  • A very good Tai Chi master can use almost verything as a weapon. Weapons are only an extention of our body. For example, a wet towel is a good Tai-Chi weapon too.

  • My "point" was that, the techniques trained in the form shown in the clip are made for a spear, not a staff. :)

  • Who says you can't use the same technique because a stick doesn't have a mini blade at the end of it?

  • ofcourse you can.. :)

The same way you could apply sword techniques using an umbrella... :)

  • How convenient.

  • @ydyammo for both

  • Very nice 30 seconds wow I am a student of Cheng Tin Hung lineage too. Thank you very much for posting these.
