The tracks were more for aiming than anything else, the actual mount only having 4 degrees of traverse left and right.
And, besides, it's just simply too big a weapon to be used effectively against tanks. You could outrun the rate at which it could aim and fire.
Any of the 'smaller' guns and you'd be right. The 28, 24 or even 21cm siege howitzers would work, maybe even the superheavy 35.5 cm. 60cm is just too big lol.

The Germans didn't have those good armored piercing penetration bombs like the Bristish Tall Boys. Besides those type of bombs have to be dropped at high altitude, which lessens accuracy. as well as exposing the planes to FLAK. A heavy mortar has greater accuracy, penetration as well as better protected from enemy counter fire.

I've said it once and I'll say it again: if every penny on tank manufacturing and research had been spent on the Mark-IV and the Panther they would have been unstoppable. Tigers were impressive and quite deadly when wielded by a master (like Michael Wittman), but the thing nobody appreciates is that in battle, no single system will be as effective as it is planned to be. Every Tiger didn't kill 25 T-34s, which is what would have had to happen for them to be worth the money and time to build them
You are only partially correct. The Germans developed the Panzerfaust which for a few marks let a boy knock out any allied tank. A King Tiger may have been unweildy, but five of them, with some support, could easily stop a whole allied armored division in their tracks. the V-1 was cheap & unmanned but caused the Allies to divert many times the resources to bomb their launching sites & defend against them.

All very large mortars had this problem at close range. But the over 2 metric ton projectile would be enough to crush the neigbours house.

You see everyone in America was terrified of Germany that they would have an atomic bomb, so America built one as fast as possible so that they could release one before Germany. But when America captured some of the head scientists in Germany they discovered Germany still had at least another 2 or 3 years left. Germany didn't have the resources, or the scientists yet to make one.

Yes, but ultimately these big ass guns that were dished out (dora) were ineffective. You can create more damage with many more small units, and they are more mobile.
@Pixelrelated Atomic annie was noticably smaller than the german Superheavy guns Annie 280mm Gustav 800mm Karl 600mm K-5 280mm while it was the same callibur as the K-5 gun it was noticably lighter to make it mobile so couldent fire rounds as powerfull as the K-5 shells so it had a much shorter range.
Also the russians have 152mm nuke shells that can be fired from regular artillery.
it wasn't totally useless, but it wasn't as useful as cheaper artillery pieces that could be kept far behind the lines. It was basically only useful in siege situations like Sevastapol, where stable lines allowed it to get within range its relatively limited range. Unfortunately, WWII was not, generally speaking, a war of sieges.
My research told me it was a great gun but not worth the effort in making it, maintaining it and manning it....that the German Army would have been better served to utilize that effort in standard artillery...but that is hindsight...the Germans tried to win the war....and thought it woudl help and I say golly gee they were smart and motivated.
@Toku42 Uhhh..... you do realize Krupp which made most of this long range artillery was extremely useful. Seriously I mean hitting a base/town/ or whatever 27 miles away was pretty good. Paris gun from world war 1 could hit a town over 80 miles away. That wasn't useless.

Well, it's a siege weapon that fires rounds PER HOUR.
A battery of three or four would be enough. After all it's a siege mortar, it's meant to siege, not defend or attack.

@wikki11 Actually that is false. Germany never got close to an atomic bomb. You see everyone in America was terrified of Germany that they would have an atomic bomb, so America built one as fast as possible so that they could release one before Germany. But when America captured some of the head scientists in Germany they discovered Germany still had at least another 2 or 3 years left. Germany didn't have the resources, or the scientists yet to make one.

Yes, but ultimately these big ass guns that were dished out (dora) were ineffective. You can create more damage with many more small units, and they are more mobile.

@Pixelrelated Atomic annie was noticably smaller than the german Superheavy guns Annie 280mm Gustav 800mm Karl 600mm K-5 280mm while it was the same callibur as the K-5 gun it was noticably lighter to make it mobile so couldent fire rounds as powerfull as the K-5 shells so it had a much shorter range.
Also the russians have 152mm nuke shells that can be fired from regular artillery.

it wasn't totally useless, but it wasn't as useful as cheaper artillery pieces that could be kept far behind the lines. It was basically only useful in siege situations like Sevastapol, where stable lines allowed it to get within range its relatively limited range. Unfortunately, WWII was not, generally speaking, a war of sieges.

My research told me it was a great gun but not worth the effort in making it, maintaining it and manning it....that the German Army would have been better served to utilize that effort in standard artillery...but that is hindsight...the Germans tried to win the war....and thought it woudl help and I say golly gee they were smart and motivated.

@Toku42 Uhhh..... you do realize Krupp which made most of this long range artillery was extremely useful. Seriously I mean hitting a base/town/ or whatever 27 miles away was pretty good. Paris gun from world war 1 could hit a town over 80 miles away. That wasn't useless.

There's no denying that the Wehrmacht owned Poland and France, but that's pretty much it. The British ejected them from North Africa, and then the Soviet Union beat Germany to a bloody pulp.
Yes, it was insane to invade the Soviet Union, but the war wouldn't have been started in the first place if Germany wasn't run by a batshit crazy megalomaniac fighting for aryan supremacy.

6 of these mortars were built. They were called "Adam", "Eva", "Odin", "Thor", "Loki" and "Ziu". "Thor" and "Odin" were used against Sevastopol which is this clip. The other guns were used against Warsaw and Brest-Litowsk
