Andersen wrote this story in homage of his mom who had had a very sad love story wit a rich guy before she married his father. This kind of story gives us a very deep lesson which is never fall in love or pursue a man who doesn't know you..You mostly end up hurt or even dead like what happened to the mermaid..This poor creature would have had a very beautiful love story with a guy who cherished and loved her for eternity....

the bad witch (or something like that) turned her into a human body. she had to marry her first love to alive, as the love marries someone else she had to kill him or she becomes sea foam

In Hans Christian Andersen's original "The Little Mermaid", after the sea witch had changed the mermaid into a human, she had to marry him in order to gain an immortal soul, and should he marry another she'd become sea foam. But the prince married another princess instead. The mermaid was given the option, "kill him and you may return to the sea", but seeing him so happy- she could not. She tossed herself into the sea and became sea foam.

@Fuleadeare It was supposed to end with sea foam (as all the hardships lead up to a sad ending), but was later changed to she flung her body into the sea but did not stop existing. She felt the sun and was embraced by the "daughters of air" who would eventually gain an immortal soul. There have been many rumors about why it changed so suddenly, the most popular is religious pressure and others think it was his original intention.

I've loved this story since I was little and just really want to put out there all that I know about it because a lot of people don't know how deep it is, all they know is Disney's version.

any version is good and beautiful at is own way but again it's depend about the favouriet ending of yours i think someone so in love and so confident and cheerful wouldn't gave in so easely it's was like she waited that to happend ahe was very passivic there don't you think so ?

Shrug, The original story where she dies and becomes a spirit of the air is for me at least more touching than what you get in the Disney film, And I like the animation in this one better myself with it's Tezuka influence

more than what they gave us in the Disney version. To each their own.
