@bassistoftheyear The tsuba is actually there to stop your hand from slipping onto the blade during thrusts, and not to protect the hand from the opponent's blade, which is a common misconception (still better to have one though!).
Not all the bokken in my dojo have tsubas but it is preferred.
We also train using full contact combat kenjutsu (for lack of a better term). We are all in tne SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) and use those armor, weapons, and safety standards, but not the combat rules. We emphisize proper movement, control, and cutting technique in our training.
Yes, there are others out there that practice this way, and even do more intense practice than this. I am in Memphis, TN. I, and some friends of mine, have been seriously trying to study kenjutsu for many years (34yrs for me) on our own. No one here to teach us so we have to do the best we can. This is very similar to a drill we do to develop movement, perception, and reaction skills.
This exercise does not make sense without tsuka - put some shinai tsuka on your bokken and try again.
Also your form is too open and your distance is poor. A sincere swordsman will not screw around with flowery parries and will come in with intent to kill you.
Kenjutsu, iaido, kendo, jujutsu and yoroi kumiuchi go hand in hand. Learn from them all to adjust your form.
I practice Sei-Too Ryu Kenjutsu, and in response to your question, upon reaching advanced ranks(Shodan and up) we practice fencing with Bokken. We actually do sparring similar to what they do in Kendo as well(with Kenjutsu techniques) so really this type of excersize is simply to practice control. Tipically we do bokken sparring on Testings to show the amount of control so that the instructor can properly examine the student to make sure he is ready for next rank. By the way, where is your dojo?
Nvm i just read your previous post. I am actually transfering to MSU this coming year for school, and I would be in need of a dojo. Is there a website for your school, or could you lend me some information? It would be much appreciated! By the way, in my last post i never said it but very nicely done. Thanks for posting the vid.
That was very beautiful to watch, considering that it was not kata or kumitachi. How long did you guys have to practice to get such beautiful control? That almost seems very accurate to what a real kenjutsu duel would look like. Keep up with this I believe that this will help your timing and control greatly.
well done gentlemen. good control and respect for each other, also very good control of your center and keeping chudan. also good ma-ai. this is how some fellow students and I will start practicing. where are u guys located? were in Vanccouver BC in Canada
That is not supposed to be regular, i would say it's something between kendo and other thing but iaido. But i say i very nice to watch, and we are supposed to evolve with what we learn
I do Kenjutsu (Ken Kai Ryu) and we fence quite alot like this.
You guys are exceptional at it, I must say.

neither of you have a tsuba? what is the reason for this? is it ryu specific? seems kinda dangerous to me even a bokken can break a finger

I agree with you. However, I think we all know that keeping a perfect form in free practice is almost impossible.
Can you make a video of your free practice and let us see it? I would like to.

Great!
I practice Kyushin Ryu Kenjutsu, a style wich includes controlled sparring.
Your form is really beautiful, even in free practice.
