This is the most amazingly helpful video ever. Beautifulmike has no idea what he is talking about, not to mention that the music flows perfectly with the narrations and it is not too loud. You must be a history teacher or something if you are this knowledgeable.
Ummm, actually, Virginia was a Royal Colony, with the Church of England as it's state church. Same as England. New England was where the congregationalists made their stand.
@SGV2087 There was no such thing in colonial times. Many of the colonies had state religions, and persons were required to support them through taxation and other means.
@mattimattiusa Ummm, and where, exactly in the Constitution is it? You are wildly mistaken! Perhaps you should actually READ the Constitution before you start making stupid remarks that you learned from wtching too much tv. If you think it's in the First Amendment, try again. My eighth grade students know more about the Constitution than most "journalists" and many "politicians".
Try again, Jack. There is NO mention of "Separation of Church and State in the Constitution.
30 lashes on your back. That would teach many a petty criminal a good lesson. It is swift, cheap and bery painful. Criminals could be sentenced in court, taken outside, flogged, and sent home. Once flogged, petty criminals would think twice about doing anything that might warrant another visit to the whipping post. This punishment should be brought back for males only though.
30 lashes on your bare back. That would teach many a criminal a lesson. Its cheap, swift and surely very painful. Once you felt the lash I doubt if you would risk doing anythingthat would merit a visit to the whipping post. This punishment should be brought back.
Communities were closed knit, so public embarrassment was effective..

This is an interesting video but the music is too loud and sometimes stops one from understanding what the narrator says.

You forgot one other punishment: hanging. They did that for murder and for repeat offenders too.

Better those that cannot or would not normally behave be forced to behave because at least they would not currupt others through wrong doing.
All crime would be dramatically reduced.

punishment for not going to church? what happened to separation of church and state?
SGV2087 3 years ago 6
Didn't exist back then.
chrismc410 3 years ago
Do yourself a favour and open history book. There was no "separation of church and state" in colonial America, which was Puritan colony.

In colonial times there was no separation. That came about after the American Revolution. Under British Law at that time you could hang for theft.

@SGV2087 Separation of Church and State is in the Constitution - which did not exist yet in Colonial times. :)

Bring it all back i say the world would be a better place thats for sure.
Crime rate would fall dramatically.
And respect and care for people would be brought back to society.
darknight7002 3 years ago
how would respect and care come back. if ppl are pretending to be nice bc theyre afraid of unusual punishment then theres really no respect.

SGV2087 3 years ago
We should bring back this form of justice. The prisons wouldn't be so crowded.
