I have sewn buttons on by machine for years. I tape the button in place with clear tape - NO FINGERS!. I also leave on my zig-zag foot, which helps to hold the button and fabric/garmet in place. I drop the feed dogs, or cover them if it is that type of machine. Then I proceed as you indicated, manually putting the needle down the first couple of times, then use the foot feed. Tape is easily removed when finished.
The last 3 videos I got an email notice to watch all say Private and wont let me view them. I can see all others just not - 4patxo , fussycut, flying geese quilting made easy. Was the notice sent out as a mistake?
Thank you! I have been sewing for almost 30 years, but have never attempted to use my sewing machine for sewing on buttons. I'm going to try it now.

Thank you! I have an older machine and thought you could only do this with the newer ones!

I use the button foot on all my machines. No chance of getting hit by the needle. The button is held securely and is attached really quickly.
