If you have a mac, hold down control+option+command and then 8 in that order. It will turn your picture neg. It makes the video even more bizarre.

That does work. You can also rub a pencil eraser or even a finger hard upon your skin, and leave a glowing stripe. Make an "X" on your forehead like Manson.

That's near-IR, not night-vision. Near-IR cameras are pretty cool, but they need an IR spotlight for night use.

Thermal cameras are always expensive because they use a custom chip: an array of microscopic thermometers on etched cantilevers. Cheap IR cameras use an array of photocells.
