I have a 9 inch drum. Should i not pull the rope so hard when tuning a smaller head? I think it takes away abit of the bass. These smaller drums need all they can get.
I have one of your drums. How do you keep the head from being stretched unevenly? Can i skip some of the verticals? With congas i tune evenly and loosen the head after playing to keep the head even, and relieve tension on the shell and skin. Is this necessary on a djembe?
@waveriderz Skipping verticals is not a good idea as it eats up your extra tuning rope quickly and can easily become confusing. With a traditional rope tuning system it's not as important to concern yourself with tuning the head evenly. Obviously on a mechanical tuning system it's much simpler to bring the head down evenly however part of the charm with a rope tuning system is the traditional look and feel. In short it's not necessary.
hey, i watched about 100 youtube vids and still didn't get it, go to this one and finally worked out how to do the knot thing that makes the 2 ropes cross over eachother, so i did a whole heap of them around the drum but i still want it tighter and i don't know how to do one over verticles that have already had the knot done on them....anyone please help? would be much appreciated.
Yea man thanks, I went to a drum shop n asked them if they could teach me but they said they didn't know how and that it takes a couple hours... ha that was easy Thanks again man
I followed your video step by step and I managed to tune my Djembe to perfection! Thank heaps :)

How do I determine where to start knotting?
A little more introduction into basic pre-tuning knowledge would be great, thanks.

What happens when you are out of rope?

Thanks my drum sounds sooo much better, and I have a nice blister on my ring finger to prove it was 'hard work'
gerrybrim 2 years ago
@gerrybrim wrap the rope around a bit of broom stick or something similar ,and then pull on the stick with both hands-no blisters.

This helps a great deal: thank you. I spent Dragonfest with a drum pitched too low, but nobody complained---- it's all good.
