Engine out, dead side main gear stuck - nice job! Landing on wonky gear is treacherous enough, but doing it on one engine is outstanding! I'll bet the pilot's glad it wasn't the left engine that was out.
@winterka100 Oh you're right! You can see he shuts it down & feathers it at about 1:00. I've heard that was procedure if both mains were up, but clearly he did shut it down on (very) short final. (I'm not multi-trained, obviously, just ASEL, but as a dispatcher I got ~20+ hrs twin turboprop jumpseat time.) I wonder if it would be safer to cut & feather them both at that point to keep it stable? His flare & TD were pretty clunky for a single gear landing, though great for a single-engine landing.
the reason he was rolling to the left at the point of landing is because if he didn't lose enough speed before letting the right side of the airplane touch down, the friction from the wing could turn the airplane and the forward inertia could have flipped the plane.
@megaflyer99 But shouldn't he have touched down banking to the left, keeping the right main up as long as possible? IJS, I don't know how I'd perform in such an emergency (thankfully never been in that situation), and I think the fact that he got it down without bending it unnecessarily deserves the highest kudos, but it doesn't look like he was trying to keep the right main off the ground at touchdown. He's an ace IMO for pulling it off, but I don't understand that one aspect.
@dcs002 Well I understand your compliments to the pilot... And I'm sorry, I am notorious for not being clear while explaining. I can always see it in my head but cant verbalize it. sorry!
@megaflyer99 Hey, that's ok! Not having easy answers spoon-fed to me gives me an excuse to read up on an issue & learn for myself! Now where online do I look for engine-out procedures in light piston twins...
@megaflyer99 Thanks for the tip. I found Beech Baron & Duchess emergency checklists online, but both only cover full belly landings, not landings on one main. I'll keep checking. I think the military version of the Baron is the T-42?
@dcs002 Try searching checklists for a Piper Seneca (the aircraft in the video). Also, for what it's worth, if one of your main gear won't come down, you may be better off landing with all gear up. As with many things- it depends on the situation. For the gentleman in this video, things worked out, so 3 cheers for him. Plus, having a grass strip to land on can be beneficial (for light aircraft), if you're familiar with it and know it is smooth.
The doors are already opened for good reason. If the airframe buckles enough in a crash landing those inside may find them difficult or impossible to open. The way the doors open on this and similar type aircraft make it a non-event; besides, the airflow will keep the door mostly closed, just not latched. This particular aircraft, the Piper Seneca, can be certified to fly with the rear passenger door completely removed, i.e. for aerial photography.
Great idea landing it in grass... I bet there was extremely minimal damage!!! Perfect job except he left the Master Switch or Batt switch on as you can see the strobes still going. Can't think of everything under stress like that I'm sure... Great job!!!
it's like ants running from a fire. how many of you pussy's left your girl friend sitting in there? please don't tell me it was just 5 guys on vacation. You can do what you want, I'm not one to judge you.
2 the plane will be able to be reused which makes it even a better landing
3 the pilot kept center line
4 the pilot decided to stop the right engine before landing, so it wouldn't impact with the runway as soon as the right wing with loose lift and drop and from the very second the landing was assured they stopped the left engine
5 great job as from my point of view, I fly myself and I can imagine the stress and workload those final seconds
Thats the result of German snitchers spreading hatred and lies. The aim is to distract from German atrocities comitted during the NAZI time and today. My brother Markus Bott had been tortured during five and a half years.I recorded more than 450 hours of evidence which ended in the legal system. The BND which is the renamed GESTAPO continued to torture my brother for another 1.5 years, now with the aid of the "legal“ system. Markus was murdered on 11.7.09 because of our homepage
@mikerepmo ur a dumbfuck. if he scratches those fuel lines when he puts the belly on the ground they could literally blow up at any second. your smart bet after you put an aircraft down on its belly is to jump out and get the hell away and let the firemen take care of it
Nice landing and well planned. I thought he was going to lose it a moment after he first touched down. Not sure he saved the starboard prop though but certainly avoided extensive damage to the engine.
@kazns The engines was the fine the pilot shut them off before he touched the ground to stop the propellers from being damaged and the engines being shock loaded
The Pilot did a cracking Job landing it safely on the grass runway, my dad taught the guy on the twin rating and helped the pilot land it, which included feathering the right prop, the only damage to the aircraft was the right undercarriage, but at the end of the day it was the pilot who landed it
@oracle2world Runways all over the world are often grass or gravel. Paved, tarmac or concrete runways were introduced because aircraft got heavier and would sink in the grass.
Disadvantages? Grass runways can cause increased take off and landing distances because of slippery grass in wet conditions. Some grass runways can be uneven or not as smooth as a paved one.
There are more grass/gravel runways in the world than there are paved.
@oracle2world Yes Numbskull. its only Shoreham is a very small airport and has no need for paved runways because the light aircraft wont sink in the ground unlike a learjet for example witch is heavy and would sink in the grass, and Shoreham has paved runways anyway.
@AwSoMeReeceMorris - well, it looks like a great runway for an RC airplane. There is one 10 feet long (3 meters for you) that looks like an A-10 warthog that runs about $30,000 assembled.
Who cuts the grass on these runways? You have goats or something?
@oracle2world Your such a knob. I know what 10 feet is, no we use grass cutters and i dont care about RC, just because we are a small city dos'nt mean we dont have the resorces you knob. the only reson america is big is becase it need to be, it need huge houses for huge people.
@AwSoMeReeceMorris - There is nothing wrong with living in a small city, or living in a small house. Nothing at all. Whatsoever. And I can trace my roots back to Scotland. Although I can't understand anything they say. (Is Scottish considered to be a separate language?
Small and green is beautiful. And great for the environment. And stuff. Hope this helps.
Nice, but a little short on the flare, he could have maintained the nose up a little bit more for a smoother landing, still the plane will fly again and so will the passengers, so all in all a good landing.
That was text book very good job. watch how they have the doors in the ready position so if anything happens the doors don't become jammed shut. 1 engine shut down so debre would not be a factor and 1 landing gear broken boy this guy did a good job.
SAVED BOTH ENGINES! Great job on the pilot's part. I don't see those props touch the ground once... although the left one was cloooose on that 2nd bounce.
F-ing title... this is NOT a crash... morons... get it right.
You're right! But this is the beauty of YouTube: people like me can speak with great, pompous airs of authority over issues we know absolutely NOTHING about! Its kind of fun---in a weird way. Honestly, I think the guy did a great job!
I'm not going to join in the chorus of "what a great pilot". Point one: did he do a proper walk-around before flight? Point two: why did they all cowardly run from the airplane? Point three: I didn't see him bank sharply to the port and then snap back to starboard. That would have locked the wheel down. You see, this is a classic case of pilot error. and I would have done it differently. I know I could have brought that bird to roost, safely and without damage.
@TheCannonofMohammed : 1. How would the pre flight walk round have told him/her that there would be an undercarriage failure on landing? 2. In the event of a crash landing RUN LIKE HELL is damned good advice 3. Under the assumption that he/she didn't really relish the idea of a crash landing don't you think that all possible solutions had already been tried? I have the feeling that you are NOT a pilot.
@TheCannonofMohammed I'll put you in the 'I would have done this' chorus then. Fact is, you don't know what you would have done unless you were in that exact airplane at that exact time under the same exact circumstances. You people are hilarious.
@TheCannonofMohammed He also forgot to cut engines before landing, and made first a normal touchdown, but corrected after plane bounced. I think besides of those errors wich could became a bigest deal, everyone were able to walk out the plane so it was not a safe landing but a good one. (I now that not safe but good sounds contradictry, I just can't express what I think, but give you an idea)
@TheCannonofMohammed "Point two: why did they all cowardly run from the airplane?" your a fucking retard you think they were going to sit it in it for fun or try and taxi in it. i would like to see you in the same place and not run away these people were happy to have there lives and be uninjured. you sir are a fucking mongo and need to get a real life and you clearly have not been in any real life situations.
@j9kl I maintain my position that the people should not have run away like rats off a sinking ship. There is a certain nobility that comes with riding the ship to the bottom; in this case, it would have entailed staying on board even as the plane burned around them. It is called being noble; AWAY WITH COWARDICE! That is the problem with this country. People cut and run. They need to stay and fight for what is right and true.
@TheCannonofMohammed stay and fight there not soldiers you retard unless you've been in real situations were your life is a risk you cant say that but this is youtube so you must be one of those 40 year old virgins with no life pretending to be badass so get a life.
@TheCannonofMohammed Stop spouting such immature rhetoric you stupid cretin. Noble to stay and burn? Where do you get such crap from - the Koran? LOLOLOL It's sensible to move away from a place that's dangerous. Would you move if a car was about to hit you - or maybe you think it's noble to be splattered? A word of advice to you. Please go somewherre REALLY dangerous and then get all 'noble' for us will you? Moron!
@TheCannonofMohammed No you wouldn't. YOU would have looked for the nearest skyrise and flown it into it you brainwashed Muslim cretin. You say it's a classic case of Pilot error? No.. It's a classic case of an Islamic fool talking fundamentalist crap.
@MyPoeticLicence You must stop speaking this way or you could find yourself threatened with multitudinous beheadenments. I say, "go down wth the ship!!!" Nobility----it is something these modern day pilots know NOTHING about!
The wing might be damaged on the right side and the right elevator could be damaged to as well as the undercarriage. And ofcourse the landing gear but it was a Professional job on cutting off the right engine but leaving the left one on in case of a go-around.
right engine prob self destructed in flight and took out starboard undercarriage mechanism, which was probably the reason for emergency landing, I'd guess
@bluevidcam He purposefully killed the engine and feathered the prop on the side of the failed gear to minimize damage to the engine in prop upon landing. He knew the right side of the plane would hit the ground due to the failed gear.
@phillipislbj yeah, it looks that way to me as well. Dont want prop blades tearing into the fuselage! Not quite what I'd call a beautiful landing :-) but this pilot would definitely get a lifetime of christmas dinner invitations from me haha.
He or she is a real pro. If an engine is shut down then less stress is put on the engine when the prop strikes the ground, The pilot knew that the right prop was going to strike and so shut the engine down prior to the landing. A GREAT job.
That is a common thing to do. The engine still has to be inspected though and probably overhauled but he saved the airplane for a spinning prop can easily rip the engine off its mounts requiring a total rebuild.
Great skill from pilot. Well thought out, kept calm and with luck playing its part he and his passengers walked away. They were obviously ready to bail out as seen by the already opened door prior to coming to rest - cool.
I wouldnt call it textbook, as it was a little "hot" but damn good job. I used to live flying out of shoreham with its mix of tarmac and grass runways. oh and tailwheelflier, it was a british pilot not a french pilot.
@tailwheelflier Aircraft is UK registered, not French. AAIB didn't find fault with how the pilot dealt with a fatigue-based failure of the landing gear.
i agree with the fact that pilot did a great job. no doubt about it, but what i could not understand was that why were the firefighters so relaxed and slow about it all?
Text book my ass, the pilot nearly killed everyone trying to save the engine.

@TheCannonofMohammed No you wouldn't. YOU would have looked for the nearest skyrise and flown it into it you brainwashed Muslim cretin. You say it's a classic case of Pilot error? No.. It's a classic case of an Islamic fool talking fundamentalist crap.
MyPoeticLicence 1 year ago
@MyPoeticLicence You must stop speaking this way or you could find yourself threatened with multitudinous beheadenments. I say, "go down wth the ship!!!" Nobility----it is something these modern day pilots know NOTHING about!
TheCannonofMohammed 1 year ago
The wing might be damaged on the right side and the right elevator could be damaged to as well as the undercarriage. And ofcourse the landing gear but it was a Professional job on cutting off the right engine but leaving the left one on in case of a go-around.

That was done so well the plane will without any doubt be up and flying again in only a few weeks!

Stunning job! Smart work with the right engine and great work keeping the weight off the damaged gear!

Great job by the pilot!
4thstooge 2 years ago
right engine prob self destructed in flight and took out starboard undercarriage mechanism, which was probably the reason for emergency landing, I'd guess
myz1 2 years ago
I noticed they had the doors opened before the plane touched down!!!
Eyan1818 2 years ago
@Eyan1818 Yeah that's standard procedure in an emergency landing. You don't want to get stuck in wreckage trying to fiddle with the door.
phillipislbj 2 years ago
probably killed the engine to stop a fire
peterm8133 2 years ago
So did the pilot kill the right engine because the right wheel wasn't locked down or was it chance that both engine and right wheel failed?
bluevidcam 2 years ago
@bluevidcam He purposefully killed the engine and feathered the prop on the side of the failed gear to minimize damage to the engine in prop upon landing. He knew the right side of the plane would hit the ground due to the failed gear.
phillipislbj 2 years ago
@phillipislbj yeah, it looks that way to me as well. Dont want prop blades tearing into the fuselage! Not quite what I'd call a beautiful landing :-) but this pilot would definitely get a lifetime of christmas dinner invitations from me haha.
NikitasGuitars 1 year ago
Why land with 1 engine? Right side engine is out during landing.
womb0womb0 2 years ago
He or she is a real pro. If an engine is shut down then less stress is put on the engine when the prop strikes the ground, The pilot knew that the right prop was going to strike and so shut the engine down prior to the landing. A GREAT job.
formbyquiz 2 years ago 36
Cool, makes sense. thanks
womb0womb0 2 years ago
@formbyquiz
That is a common thing to do. The engine still has to be inspected though and probably overhauled but he saved the airplane for a spinning prop can easily rip the engine off its mounts requiring a total rebuild.
marick626 1 year ago
@formbyquiz i agree that landing was amazing
LoNGruNer1 1 year ago
@formbyquiz
It also saves him having to strip down the engine and rebuild it from scratch. Any prop strike, the FAA requires that.
Jamesfromnyc 1 year ago
Because if the prop of a running engine strikes the ground, it costs about $20,000 for a mandatory rebuild.

Passengers - "What do we do??"
Pilot - "When the plane stops, if you still have a pulse, run like hell..."
texNoz 2 years ago 7
Great skill from pilot. Well thought out, kept calm and with luck playing its part he and his passengers walked away. They were obviously ready to bail out as seen by the already opened door prior to coming to rest - cool.

very nice, surprised to see the right gear so twisted, i wonder how that happened

I wouldnt call it textbook, as it was a little "hot" but damn good job. I used to live flying out of shoreham with its mix of tarmac and grass runways. oh and tailwheelflier, it was a british pilot not a french pilot.

@tailwheelflier it's more likely the pilot was British since the registration on the a/c is a UK one.

@tailwheelflier Aircraft is UK registered, not French. AAIB didn't find fault with how the pilot dealt with a fatigue-based failure of the landing gear.

Dude has his door open before the plane even stops, fantastic piloting and preparation.

i agree with the fact that pilot did a great job. no doubt about it, but what i could not understand was that why were the firefighters so relaxed and slow about it all?
nileshabhinav88 2 years ago
@nileshabhinav88 where's the fire ,they're just there for prevention , no fire= no problem.
riverlifeva 2 years ago 4
the pilot circled to get rid of fuel....less fire risk so only need a hand line
pcjoel999 2 years ago
well executed
mackc6r 2 years ago
as I observe, they landed on the grass not the runway? is that to prevent fire?
mustang19ms 2 years ago 2
That's the actual runway in use... i think.
Funny thing to watch they did all the checklist:
- Unlock doors to prior touchdown
