so an accurate tap at the joint will be able to snap the knee forward and makes the leg throw easier and efficient? i think tis throw would work better than a hip throw if it's man vs woman in means of self-defense..cos the woman doesn't hav to carry it on her hip to throw the man..izzit true?
okay before any children try this at home , this needs to be done in a matted area also you have to make sure the person is off balance and that all of their weight is on the foot you are going to sweep also you should step more behind them then to the side just for more leverage if you've never done it before and osoto gari in english means major outer reaping which is what it is and does
He makes the sweep look so simple and almost unnecessary. Judo is about efficiency and the fact that he merely had to "tap" ham rather than sweep him shows he's mastered the most efficient way. Also many people say this technique is much harder to do on a larger opponent unless your technique is very good.
There is another variation of OSoto Gari that I use where you step forward, touch shoulder, and leg sweep. The technique demostrated here is very efficient if you can throw your opponent off-balance. Against stronger opponents, I tend to use the other variation.
Too everyone that did not like this: Remember this is "expert village". You need to lower your expectation when you see that logo. Once you do that, the expert village videos are not so bad. ★★★★☆
@gwenvar yeah, you're right. this isnt a perfeft o soto gari. this video was probably made to show the general idea on how to do it. im sure if he wanted to he could do a real one hes a sixth degree black belt (correct me if im wrong) he was just trying to get the idea out. and he clearly displayed judo is about getting your opponent off balance rather than physical force. its all about technique.
gotta respect and admire these guys, always respect older people, they've been around, they've seen more, they know more, they deserve respect. When im at this guys age i want to be able to stay fit and still do Judo, thats the great thing about Judo, anyone can do it, old or young, male or female, even with some disabilities you can still do Judo and man is it lethal when used in self defence...
Actually, these videos are great. yes, these men are old, and they appear frail, but if there is one thing Judoka know, it is that technique trumps physical ability. Those red and white stripes mean that Anderson Sensei has forgotten more about Judo than I ever knew, since my belt is only solid black.
If the men in that video can perform these techniques, imagine what a healthy 22 year old athlete can do with them.
@johnnybolla Plus, that guy's a at least 6th Dan grade, I would not mess with since Im only a shodan. In terms of martial arts, elderly really DOES know best
@johnnybolla I'm sorry man, but his tecnhique is awful, first of all his left foot should surpass his opponent and not stay in front of him, if you do that you will be countered easily, your body should be atleast side by side with your opponent or ideally beyond them... and the leg that is gonna sweep, in the moment of impact should be completely stretched, hitting the inside of the Uke's knee and then pulling his leg towards you..
@fide9 I dont know that I can agree with that. Sure, Tori's position can get to where it's almost Harai Goshi, but hitting the side of the knee can absolutely mitigate any attempts by Uke to use leg strength and a position drop to stuff the throw. Certainly the Kodokan agrees, as is evidenced by Toshohiro Daigo's "throwing techniques of Kodokan Judo"
lmao it sound like stepping on a cats tail and its yelling but he said knee! lol i think when he said it he strainned his voice but atleast he did good lol
I know that dude has to be at least a 8th degree black belt because he has a red and white belt, but he could have explained the technique in alot more detail. :(
It can also be used agianst a front choke

One of the best throws. Done with full speed and force, the opponent is smashed to the ground and the fight should be over in seconds.
