  • Useless as a first step video, it assumes the user has JDK, Eclipse, Android SDK etc all setup and ready to go. even textbooks for experianced programmers new to android dont make that fatal flaw.

  • @samljer Those are pretty easy to install, just make sure the Android SDK is directed in Eclipse by a directory with NO SPACES. Underscores are OK, but someone decided to go back to DOS days so you can't use spaces ;)

  • Does anyone remember when AJAX was big? At least they got the cell phone audio effect right.

  • why would you skip the step of telling a beginner how to find and download Eclipse and how to download and install the SDK for android? You went straight past this to an already setup environment...

  • O'Reilly does things best. Been using their books for about 15 years. Great company!

  • @megothier As in George Bush? He was American. Enough said.

  • Very nice, really helpful little tutorial.

  • This is the first screencast I watched on Android Development and found it very nice to watch another developer coding and re-learned some quick key combinations. Thanks for posting!

  • oreilly has no need to give stuff for free. The complaints are uncalled for.

  • Holland mothafucka :P

  • Thank you for making this beginner's guide. YouTube is sorely lacking in stuff for beginners. Stopping to define terms is extremely important. So is giving a list of required programs and/or support applications to download first. A list of links to those would be great. Oh, and, Dude - we want it for free.

  • thank you!!

  • Im malaysia u?

  • From russia with love

  • @xIUBUNTUIx Think you'll find 63 people agree with me... 64 people don't tend to be wrong. Plus i believe better quality is available on you tube which is free. Finally I'd prefer it if you didn't use that language when talking to me. Thank you :-)

  • @thegingeryeti really? Explain Bush... Think that was more than 64 people...

  • It sounds better at 360p

  • Thank you very much for this tutorial :)

    Greetings from Trinidad.

  • great stuff man :-)

  • 48 people didn't realize it was free...

  • Thank you for this free tutorial, one of my first tutorials I will hopefully start uploading apps to the Android Store soon! =P

  • best wishes for ur micro phone from India!!!!:)

  • Sounds like an online class using webex ...Thank you for posting I want to build an app for my church...I will be viewing this to see what I can learn...I know how to build a website, but have no clue on how to make an app.

  • Anyone have the link to the code mentioned several times in the video?

  • After two years still a good way to get started with Android. Thanks O'Reilly Media

  • Very informative, thank you.

  • @Ziefo Windows or Mac.

  • hiii i need to know what operating sistem is the best for android apss ... and what resources take it for

  • @Ziefo android is best for android apps

  • Comment removed

  • Very Good Presentation... Good Presentation for understanding overall concepts of Android..

  • is he talking on the phone.. lol

  • @theydidntnameme It's a screencast. That's how it sounds.

  • Thumbs up if you didn't watch all of it

  • Oh so there are applications that are targeted at specific devices?

  • Listen in 360p sound sounds better - like so people know

  • no problem with the microphone, sounds good. thanks

  • If there are multiple devices that run android and that have different capabilities how are apps compatible with all of them? or are they?

  • @ihavethelastusername apps can be coded to adapt to the handset or tablet they are running in. you can also create apps that run only on certain devices

  • @ihavethelastusername

Your android app advertises its capabilities, and the android market helps filter what apps can be run on your device.

  • Israel1:09:00 the override ALT + CTRL + F doesn't work for me... running Windows

  • how do i get these plugins for eclipse? can someone please leave the links?

  • america

  • I like that people complain after something useful is given to them for free.

  • @sonicphobia Nothing is free.

  • @RyeinGoddard Learning is free, but what you want to learn comes at a price.

  • @sonicphobia I like that people complain, about other peoples complaining; when its already obvious to everyone.

  • @samljer You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

  • @sonicphobia ya... being a smartass totally changed what I said.....

  • @samljer I don't know how I've gone the last seven months without your comments. I'm complete now.

  • @sonicphobia your welcome, and stop complaining so much. Its the net.

  • @samljer I never complained about anything here. "It's the net." You should make bumper stickers or something with that wit.

  • @sonicphobia this is what im talking about... time to move on don't u think.. but now, you'll talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk, because much like your live I'm sure, u just have to be heard with your last word.. dare u to prove that wrong.

  • @samljer You, Sir, are the troll that replied to a seven month old comment. And yes, I will have the last word. I haven't lost a flame war since the 1980s.

  • @sonicphobia simply by answering, u just did, or you cant readproving me wrong would equal win, ur too stupid for that.

  • @samljer You clearly don't understand how "the net" or English works.

  • @sonicphobia good cover, mobile broswer doesn't changed the fact ur an idiot, and boring, and now on my ignore. I win, you blew it lol. I gave u an out twice just too see if u would take it, bait in sluts as long as u think u have been winning flame wars, which this was not by the way.

  • @samljer You really have to be one of the weakest trolls I've ever encountered.

  • @sonicphobia holy shit

shut the fuck up, cuz from where were standing he made you look like a fucking tool.

  • @thescanada lol the best part is he has no clue about what just happened..

  • @samljer I saw you getting sexy with your bro over there.. did I miss something else?

  • @thescanada Don't you have some Airsoft videos to troll?

  • I liked that video, voice is not that bad

  • nice nice nice

  • Oh, I almost forget it. Thanks a lot for this video man! I mean it :)

  • Is it only me, or his mic is REALLY bad? I could understand it all, but it was kind of annoying.

  • I like how everyone complains about the microphone when i find this mic clear and it doesnt annoy me at all. In fact this video really helped me.

  • Feedback: Buy an hi-quality mic and ill watch this till the end.... Till then i wont thank you

  • This video unwatchable with that awful sound, shame this looks like it would have been a really useful video

  • This video unwatchable with that awful sound

  • damn, that bitch is anoying!

  • God damn , fix your microphone brother :)

  • sweden watch ya :D

  • MAC rules

  • Ive studied this darn tutorial like crazy, Eclipse is giving me 0 errors and i understand it fairly well by now, yet still cant get the app to switch to the greenflashlightactivity part, just gives me a process error in the emulator. I dont know, but it seems as if its because this video is dated and the newer versions of Eclipse are somewhat different...?

  • Never build android apps on a MAC build iPod apps on a MAC!!!

  • get a lav mic

  • i have the high quality mp4 version of this and the voice recording is very good. the quality was probably lowered to upload onto youtube.

  • Canada

  • nice work .... long video in contrast to sound quality, u genius :) ..... for lukestatton1

  • Germany is watching you.

  • Gezuz Christ Oreilly wtf is up with your mic!

  • Thanks a lot.

it is a very good android intro video. This helps a lot for android app dev starters.

small feed back -> sound quality is very annoying :-).

Hope u consider this feed back for u r next work shops :-)

other than that, overall it is a very good demo.

  • Have critics leaving low star ratings? Get TWENTY 5 star ratings on your app in less than 24 hours! starmyapp (dot) com

  • You forgot the exclamation point );!

Does not flow smoothly and tedious to watch. Mentions of key combination for different operating systems should have been minimal. The screen sync problems around mid way set up a frustration that is expanded upon by boring tangents like the activity naming convention topic. This question could have been shrugged off imo. I will look for a quicker tutorial that is compact with examples. Thanks for the information though, I just found it difficult to watch.

  • Where did you get all the options have on

    VIEWS and LAYOUT

    At 34:01?

  • Hey guys, found great website: allforandroid . com

Is it true that they give away free Htc evo 4g?

    I'm confused

  • @kaarelrohel

hahaha it really does man, thx for the link

  • You should go to college and watch recordings of courses - believe me, this recording is good. (if you don't have 100000 subscribers)

now the phone ringing at 16:20 - that's annoying

  • The audio quality is really terrible !

  • Despite the relative age of this presenation (2009) I found it to be informative on the basics of Android programming. It was helpful in my self-education. Thank you for this information, Tony.

  • That sound quality is irritating, surely if you are recording an hour long video, you should use a proper microphone.

  • @lukestratton1 it's because the video is recorded from a live stream

  • @lukestratton1 LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

  • @lukestratton1 I dont think its the microphone, It sounds like he had a lot of background noise that was filtered out using an audio editor.

  • @lukestratton1 stop bitchin'....

  • Agreed you sound like you are broadcasting from space. But the information is great and very useful. Thanks for the video

  • puta link please to download your book

  • @murderedboy Right on, Bretheren.

  • i'm not a great fan of Iphones but to be honest the iphone is a great phone. not as good is android i think. but i personally love macs I'm with apple on macs since early 90's. but it is all a matter of taste. some like it some love it. don't stigmatize any of the other brands just because you don't agree with them. respect eachother's opinion!

  • @lplucas1990 I like your way of thinking. I'm a Windows user and like both android and iOs. But the openest of Android is what attracted me to start developing. But looking to buy a mac to add to my pc army.:)

I dont want to learn to write apps for apple, Id like to write some for droid. my iphone is nice but I think droid is just as nice, if not nicer.

  • @JonGarrett2008 ooh my bad, your comment confused me haha :) sorry

  • I think I fell asleep :-/... listening to someone explain THEIR interpretation of how coding should be done, is verrrry borrrrrrrrrrrrrrrriiinnng!

Dude, you are VERY monotonous - it really doesn't help the already emotionless topic of writing code. zzzzzzzzzz

  • @unlokia i know what you mean.. its hard to understand concept as it is!

  • Youfail@screencasting

  • if your run at 360 p the oaudio is better then with 480p

  • @lukearran mac fail

  • Whys he on a mac??

  • @jnwms Why not? lol

  • @jnwms becouse windows would crash ;)

  • @jnwms Because trying to prove the point that you dont need a Chrome OS to develop Android apps, unlike Apple apps that you MUST have an Apple OS :|

    I hate steve jobs

  • @jnwms why arent u??

  • @jnwms he thought i ordered a weapon of mass destruction.

  • @jnwms He thought he ordered a weapon of mass destruction, but it was a crApple computer.

  • @jnwms Hey, I am too.

  • @jnwms -The OS is irrelevant. It's just his tool of choice...
