Best drummers for The Who 1) Keith Moon 2) Simon Phillips/Zak Starkey (both amazing) 3) Mitch Mitchel 4) Ringo Starr 5) Phil Rudd 6) Doug Sandom 7) Justin Bieber 8) An epileptic 9 year old 9) A rock with a pair of drum sticks glued to it. ............. 100) Kenny Jones
@adamef93 Really, Phil Rudd over Kenney Jones? I'd personally rank them as this (Who drummers only): Moon, Starkey, Jones, Philips.
Simon Philips is not a bad drummer at all, but his overall vibe in the Tommy tour was totally wrong for the band and made them sound like washed-up geezers going through the worst part of the '80s. They sound better in their 60s than they did in their 40s, IMO.
Too bad we never got to see a REAL performance of Who Are You with Keith. Kilburn was a great concert to watch and was a real historical thing, but ultimately it was sub-par.
I imagine that if Keith somehow survived the 70s, though he would've changed so much and wouldn't have really been himself ever again, he would've regained his drumming ability like it was in his prime.
It's hard to picture him as he would appear now, in his 60s...
no roger's vocals definately gave them the "raw edge". Keith was an amazing drummer but i dont like the who because of only him. Peter Townshend will always be the guitar hero, John "thunder fingers" entwhistle the badass, and Roger Daltrey the aggresive singer. they all unite perfectly to form the second greatest band in the history of music - The Who.
Yeah. I think Jones gets a bad rap, too. That period was weird in a lot of ways. First off, Moon was unique, and absolutely perfect for Pete's material from 65 to his death. But, they had problems with him, Quadrophenia and later material he had trouble with. Moon is the main reason the Quad tour got broken down right after it started. He couldn't remember 'cue's'.
Plus, after he died, Pete started really focusing on his solo stuff. So the band wasn't gettting all of his better stuff.
PS : Just watch the Who Are You clip with Keith and his incredible drum fills, at one time he's mistaken, he continues the rythmh when he should stop, and Pete says "Nearly"... Then there's the take where he's clappin his hand in a funny way... Everybody's laughing from the start to the end, and, in the end by the way, he hurts Pete by giving him a high five... That plus his incredible style of drumming, I mean, come on
Ya know, I'm a drummer in a band, and I may be only 19 years old, I can't play a drum part without thinkin 'bout Keith... I'm just sad to see this kinda video you know, it's like there's no soul in it. Their best friend died a year before, Pete seems to be on cocaine since the very morning, I mean... It's an empty video. Any Who fan, I believe, will agree with me.
you know keith was only as good as he was cause he didnt know wat he was doing. i heard most of his drumming was just fuled by drugs as he was most usually on them. that would explain why he put fills where noone else thought. i loved his drumming and he is my number one drummer then its ian paice. but i read that on a forum and it does kinda make sense cause toward 78 when he hopped of the booze and he was attemting to drum for his last album it took him many tries townshend recalls
your probably right, but i dont think its a bad thing at all. keiths completely unorthodox drumming was a vital ingredient to the whos sound. when i put on this video the first thing i noticed was the difference in drums. ur right bout the who are you album tho. aparently he couldnt even play in 6/8 timing for music must change so they cut the drum part and used the sound pete tapping his foot
I don't know why but... I can't watch this, really. No, musically, it's still great, but....without Keith Moon... well, I can still watch their 80's and 90's lives but here, they are still all youngs, and... you miss moon, really. The lack of energy in the late year, I though it was due to their age, but it wasn't : it was all due to Moon, who was not longer here. Kinda sad to me, really, they are still young, but... the sould of the band is gone forever. :(
Kenny Jones was a fantastic drummer ,he got a bad rap and it wasn't deserved. I have seen the who many times since the 82 tour and the 82 tour with kenny was their best by far.
Yeah, Keith gave them that raw edge that they'd always tried to get on record, but could only truly reproduce live. Jones did his best, but Keith was a unique drummer who put fills in places no one else would think of.
in this video clipping shows to enjoy the music and and playing a guiter.its a attractive and interesting.

Keith was the best drummer for the Who. I've seen them several times the last 10 years and Zak Starkey is pretty damn close!

Keith was still among the living when this was recorded. Without Keith it was The Who "lite" Without John...well...

Keith died in 1978 man. This was filmed in 1979. and i agree with your comments about the The Who after keith and john died.
DUDEplayer69 3 years ago 2
Yeah but he was among the living whe it was recorded (ie - the album).
