This song was the best choice to be the last song on the album. Originally, this was supposed to be an instrumental that probably wouldn't have been chosen to be on the album. That's how talented and creative Jeff was lyrically. This was also the first song that the band ever wrote together. I also love how this was usually the first song that they played live. When the powerful instrumental kicks in after the chorus, it makes it an awesome opener that got the crowd going early.

I'm glad people are talking about the drums on this song. Drums are a completely underrated instrument for creating mood and feel. Check out anything by the Smashing Pumpkins for supreme mood-inducing drumming. (I'm not a drummer - lead guitarist ;-) ).
I've been playing drums a long time now, and Matt Johnson's work in Dream Brother still remains one of my very top musical inspirations. His work in this song demonstrates what being the drummer is all about.
I completely agree! Lovely drums & one of my favourite Jeff Buckley songs too. Great dynamics, nice technique, great feel! To me, this song is also one of the best demonstrations of what one can achieve without having to resort to 7 toms and two dozen cymbals. I think people often associate small drum kits with Jazz, but it ain't necessarily so! ;-)
Very true. I play a lot of jazz as well as some rock and a lot of funk, and before I played jazz I used to think 8 or 9 cymbals was totally necessary with extra toms and a double kick. Jazz showed me that it's far more impressive if you can dominate a simple 4 piece with a single ride and crash. Once you master that, then you can move onto auxiliary equipment if you wish. Here's a classic example.
"Check out, Jack DeJohnette - drum solo - Modern Drummer Festival 1997"
@colleenrfourie Precisely the reason Jeff Buckley appeals to me. When I first listened to this, I thought it was from the seventies. Shocked to find it was done in the nineties.
So beautiful. This song will never die.

@ericlord821 Columbia Records added Forget her as the last one after Jeff died. Jeff never wanted Forger Her on Grace.

@UshinawaLives It's too bad he's gone now. Maybe the fact that it's so tragic makes the music just...that...much...better......and haunting...

@ScienceWars I consider it my god given duty as both a rhythm and lead guitarist to undermine the drums and all percussion instruments.
