Yep, certainly could be cheaper, though it isn't really the Arduino that makes it expensive but rather the RFID module. If you had a cheaper solution for that you'd save yourself half the cost.
You make my Simon game look like... well... a toy. Very nice work. This screams industrial design, even though there really wasn't much "designing" to it (apart from the use of the coasters which is pretty ingenious). I could see this being part of a high end, sleek stereo that yuppies would eat up. Excellent job.
Thanks, if there's interest I can publish an instructable for how I did it. Had a few struggles getting it all working, but now that the bugs are worked it it would be really easy to reproduce.

It's cool, but you can't produce it using Arduinos... cost is too high.
Now re-implement that on a PIC18 + ENJ28J60 + PCB antenna and it will all cost you maybe less than 50 USD in small quantitys.
