I've been listening for 8 yrs to complaints that Bush stole the 2000 election. Despite numerous machine recounts, all the hanging chad stuff, and post-election investigations by journalists, there's no credible evidence that Gore won FLA.

spookey: As I said, the pros/cons of the EC have been debated for centuries. Very highly educated people have written texts/books on the subject and the collective decision has been to retain it. I think we've only had 3 elections where the EC and popular vote count differed; 2000 was one of them.

The analysis is clear. If we repeal the EC, pols will focus on population centers and ignore sparsely populated rural areas that have unique issues/problems. Not a good idea for anybody.

spookey: As I've said the issues that are important to people in the population centers (cities) are often completely different than those of people living in rural areas. Without the EC, 100% of Pres campaigns would be run in the cities and rural issues would be ignored. Candidates would focus on their Base, becoming more partisan.

And, I don't fear anything. I side with the overwhelming majority of legal experts, political scientists, and social scientists that agree the EC is necessary despite its flaws. This is a serious business and not something for novices to cavalierly experiment with....just to "see what happens".
