This is how it should be sung, not in the heroic booming and triumphant voice, but in misery, hopelessness and yet no wild suffering but a curious mixture of resigned despair, and a noble beauty in his agony. It takes no less than a genial singer to interpret this complicated scene, making it one of the true, big heartbreaking moments in opera. As for Verdi: Divine Immortal Master of Perfection. Pathetic words but wtf, it's the truth....

I saw Furlanetto live in this role in San Diego and Los Angeles. He brought the house down both times. He is the finest Filippo of our time. He has a magnificent voice and is the greatest actor in opera.

I listened to Ferruccio Furlanetto in London. I almost cried.

I listened to many Don Carlo, there are many great philip II... but Furlanetto is the only one show that deep, inner pain.

S. Ramey sang it brilliantly, flawless... but for me his king is more like bothered, disappointed rather than painful, weakness and hopeless.... Not to mention Ghiaurov.

Furlanetto is a phillip you will really have symphathy on.

Qui in effetti un pò di logorio vocale si sente, non capisco però questo accanimento nei confronti del povero Ferruccio, secondo me il suo filippo II non sfigura di fronte a quello dei grandissimi (siepi, ghiaurov o christoff)... Nel'86 con Karajan è miracoloso!!!!

@serenade00007 What the hell. He's not even a bass he's some cheap baritone and more of a stupid commercial product that uses opera as a mere excuse to be a sex symbol. Plus he doesn't even sing decently. And always amplified. Furlanetto is the best bass in the world next to Sam Ramey.

io ho visto quest'opera dal vivo, all'anteprima per i giovani...Furlanetto è divino nella sua esecuzione. ogni volta che lo sento mi vengono i brividi. La forza, il sentimento che trasmette nel Filippo II è impareggiabile. Ti tocca dentro.

Ero presente, non il 7, ma in una delle recite successive. Furlanetto mi è sembrato davvero sotto la soglia di guardia. Un furbo declamato, che spesso sfociava nel parlato. Una gran fatica, in soldoni. Oltre qualche problema di intonazione generale. Bella l'interpretazione, comqunque...

ho appena visto la funzione del Don Carlo alla Scala... Furlanetto è stato BRAVISSIMO, veramente è il migliore Filipo II che ho sentito nella mia vita... Semplicemente meraviglioso... grazie maestro per dare a noi il priviligio d`ascoltarlo.

Certamente la direzione orchestrale non aiutava ma Furlanetto nei grandi ruoli del basso drammatico non è mai stato particolarmente incisivo. Peraltro, a parte i suoni spesso ingolati, adesso si sente anche una certa usura. Il suo disagio nell'interpretare Filippo II si evidenziava con il ripetuto ricorso al declamato e a qualche urlo. A confronto con un Christoff, un Siepi o un Ghiaurov, Furlanetto ha mostrato diversi limiti.

Onore e gloria a Furlanetto,

anche se in la con gli anni è sempre un interprete di grande effetto,nonostante qualche piccola imperfezione vocale che penso tutti gli perdoniamo.

Bene la Zajick e il tenore bravo anche se un po' piatto nell'interpretazione.

....ma la regia è uno schifo e la direzione di Gatti a dir poco soporifera,specialmente qui.
