Glorious song. Sounds as good and fresh today as it did in the 80's. Johnny's pop sensibility is just superb and brilliantly melded with his homeland South African influences. I must admit this song is the first time this (46-year-old) Australian actually felt good about South Africa(and I know our history with regard to indigenous people is also nothing to crow about).Kudos to you Johnny and co..............

@benfrom95140 Could have sworn it came out in the late 70s, but you'r right. And it's one of my favourites too. Always sends a shiver down my back when I listen to it.
Great video. Lovers of Africa will appreciate it. I grew up in Tanganyika, later Tanzania. My book, 'Speak Swahili, Dammit!' is doing well on Amazon, & as an Apple iBook & Kindle eBook. Short video on youtube, with original footage in the bush 1950's & 60's, under Speak Swahili, Dammit!
@yumirihanna He is not a white man.He is a jew and jews are not white. It's a gross miscnception about clegg that he is white. In south africa and USA,jews are misrepresented as whites even though they do not have caucasian and nordic features.Look at clegg to start with.He has purely non caucasian features. No offense meant but that's the truth.(P.S.I am non white myself)
@haroonusmanpk Who cares about skin tone or whatever exteriority? This music is universally and globally wonderful. That's all that matters in my opinion :)
@p0531d0n I am not an anti - semite or a racist.I was just trying to remove a misconception about Clegg that people have and a misnomer that they have labelled on him i.e white zulu. That's totally incorrect.
@haroonusmanpk I was not assuming that, I didn't get you wrong. What I was trying to express is that people see him as what they want, it doesn't matter :)) To be correct, we should say that he's a "non-black" Zulu :)) This doesn't change a thing, believe me :D By the way, "white" doesn't mean caucasian to most people, it just mean not black- and not yellow- and not red-skinned, I'm pretty sure :)

@spicycustard Hi and thanks! The road to commonsense is filled with ideological potholes to say the least. Johnny Clegg strikes deep with this song to the heart of our common humanity. If we look at the cave art from Chauvet Cave, for example (virtual tours are online), we can see more powerful evidence that we are all one, and need to feel that as well as know it in our minds.
@osiruskat Thanks for the kind words. I work in education including Art/Music/Science/Math Fusion efforts, and I believe "Scatterlings of Africa" has profound educational value. I've been sending the link to this video along to other educators.

I just saw Johnny and his band perform in my hometown, and he's the man he always was. Still one of the greatest performers ever, his music full of love, hope and brotherhood. To have had a hand in the great changes that have taken place in his homeland must be a wonderful thing, and to see him again was a real pleasure. God bless Johnny Clegg and God bless Africa. @TheSandsie13 True what you say...cant say I really like the song..though its kind of catchy...and I suppose very politically correct etc....Yes he dances good...bloody flexible!!
the answer to your question is, the answers were already in side of you , before any question was asked, brother, seek inward not out , and there would be no need for questions. to master your true self, is to be truly free, then you can free others, it then becomes selfless not selfish, you then see what is true in the world, and others. until all of mankind can free themselves from slavery [modern world controlled by the select few ] all the best in your journey. bro
clegg was the first white to put together a soweto band, it was illegal for blacks and whites to associate like he did. His first recordings were fought by the state, and he was beaten, shot at, etc. but he did it. Clegg will not give up, he wants equality in South Africa, and he is slowly changing the world. More power to him, i love what he does
The sound is a bit dated now but the spirit is as strong as ever. I love the dancing as much as the music. The looks on the faces of the people watching, Brilliant Vid! Thank you!
I remember learning of Johnny and Juluka in the early '80's on the TV news of all places. Not on any music radio station! The story was about 3 black and 3 white South Afriacans playing musix together. Again this was before Neslon Mandella was freedand the fall of Apartheid. I had the good fortune of seeing then in NYC around this time. Such a joy!

Never before have I seen a white man dance like this! He is true african. And the two dancing together show perfectly, that black and white men can be real brothers.
J.Klegg lives with his black brothers, speak her language(there is too many in South africa), but he really, all his life was, andhe is black:-) I can't speak, better:-) you have informatons on you tube, before15 years neve speak about him , I doon't know why?
@comradevinyl yes i have seen this video in the 80's and loved this dance from first time now i find again on tube after so many years and is still wonderfull
I've been all over Europe (where I am supposed to descend from) and the whole time was like prison. I dreamt of home in the bushveld every night while hearing ambulances speeding by in Paris... I'll never be at home anywhere but in South Africa! No matter who hates me, who wants to kill me, what the problems are... I'd rather die here with my pride (and it's really not that bad as I'm making it sound) - I love my country and all its people.
@Bonhage2 I come from that area. It is very beautiful with the Magaliesberg as background. Picturesque is not the word... I hope that one day when you return, you will use your knowledge to improve South Africa.
South Africa is an illusion, it's a macro state founded on a fallacy and for economic expediency. All it has served to do since it's inception in 1910 is to marginalise the legitimate ethnic groups who already existed, from Bushmen to Boers to Brits to the Cape Dutch to Xhosas.
The only way a racial balance of power will be acheived is for the respective nations there to be given autonomy.
As a South African, I take offense to your statement that South Africa(SA) is an illusion founded on a fallacy. SA is very REAL and despite a few remaining divisions from a bygone era, the "new" SA is founded on racial equality and a feeling of national unity .
As for giving the "respective nations" of South Africa autonomy, we already tried that. It was called "apartheid" and it led to discrimination, oppression and conflict.
No, Apartheid was the epitome of this macro-state nonsense. It consisted of lumping scores of different groups into three, later four, crude categories- this was a disservice to patriots of all nations- whether Boers, Englishmen or Xhosas. Apartheid in no way involved granting the ethnic groups in the region autonomy, it was, as you rightly note, about oppression and it caused conflict.
There is no cultural basis for SA, that was my point.
AFRIKA: continent of a few hundred different languages, many different ethnic groups and tribes and religions and traditions.
The Afrikan continent is as diverse and clashes as much with itself as any continent on earth. Similarly with Asia. Many different racial, linguistic, religious and cultural types. People from Africa only pretent they are ''one'' when they live in Europe or America. Because they are naturally racist against white people. In Africa a Zulu has no time for, say, Nigerians.
@lizza1984 No, people are not naturally racist, put two young children together from different cultures and who are different colours and they will play as equals. Racism can only be taught from one generation to the next, only by realizing we are all the same, rather then different, can we end racism.
@puddahcat : racism is not just taught, it is learned by lifes experience, some are exposed to experiences others are not, we as humans are not all the same, how can you even say their is no difference between the races, and humans in general.
@mr1nutwonder the spirit of all mankind but comes from one ultimate source ,ungraspable to mans grasp, for fears are taught which causes weakness in the hearts of most, denials of truth, because they use their head and not the heart, those lost in the darkness need guidence, to know themselves better ,than knowing the world, hatred is the weakness.
Nothing should be more powerful than watching the Zulu dance.. the day I see it live I might just cry! Most things related to Africa do make me cry.. my mother is from Angola, and maybe that's why.
What i so like about this song is its manly sounding or Masculinely sounding. Ye ummboo ham ye amboo ham. I'm gonna get on the sttreet one day and say Ye ummboo ham to every one i'll see.
I love the fusion of Southern African and European music. I would really like a few artists to experiment with Khoi-San music styles though. It goes much further back in time.
@rusmak1 should the song thus not be called scatterlings of a continent called africa not just africa, perhaps you have got time to drop johnny clegg a line and correct his mistake also, much love xxxx
Le Zoulou blanc nous a fait vibré au festival Rio Loco à Toulouse, Merci pour ton passage Mr le grand johnny Cleg. Une grande personnalité à rencontrer je pense...

I see this song as a short history of ancient (and modern) humanity as the scientific evidence indicates in one song. I find it a very humane
song that reminds us of our common heritage, and that it is up to us, looking clearly and compassionately at our past, to dream new and better dreams.

the answer to your question is, the answers were already in side of you , before any question was asked, brother, seek inward not out , and there would be no need for questions. to master your true self, is to be truly free, then you can free others, it then becomes selfless not selfish, you then see what is true in the world, and others. until all of mankind can free themselves from slavery [modern world controlled by the select few ] all the best in your journey. bro

clegg was the first white to put together a soweto band, it was illegal for blacks and whites to associate like he did. His first recordings were fought by the state, and he was beaten, shot at, etc. but he did it. Clegg will not give up, he wants equality in South Africa, and he is slowly changing the world. More power to him, i love what he does

Such a joy!

@SouthAfricanify
The only way a racial balance of power will be acheived is for the respective nations there to be given autonomy.
theporksicle 10 months ago
@theporksicle
It was called "apartheid" and it led to discrimination, oppression and conflict.
avionrecce 9 months ago
@avionrecce
There is no cultural basis for SA, that was my point.
theporksicle 9 months ago
AFRIKA: continent of a few hundred different languages, many different ethnic groups and tribes and religions and traditions.
The Afrikan continent is as diverse and clashes as much with itself as any continent on earth. Similarly with Asia. Many different racial, linguistic, religious and cultural types. People from Africa only pretent they are ''one'' when they live in Europe or America. Because they are naturally racist against white people. In Africa a Zulu has no time for, say, Nigerians.
cleverfeller 1 year ago
No people are "naturally racist"
lizza1984 1 year ago
@lizza1984 No, people are not naturally racist, put two young children together from different cultures and who are different colours and they will play as equals. Racism can only be taught from one generation to the next, only by realizing we are all the same, rather then different, can we end racism.
puddahcat 1 year ago
@puddahcat I agree ! You must have misunderstood. When I said no people are "naturally racist" , I mean no one is "naturally racist"!
lizza1984 1 year ago
@lizza1984 sorry I misunderstood you, that's what happens when I post things late at night!
puddahcat 1 year ago
@puddahcat : racism is not just taught, it is learned by lifes experience, some are exposed to experiences others are not, we as humans are not all the same, how can you even say their is no difference between the races, and humans in general.
mr1nutwonder 1 year ago
@mr1nutwonder the spirit of all mankind but comes from one ultimate source ,ungraspable to mans grasp, for fears are taught which causes weakness in the hearts of most, denials of truth, because they use their head and not the heart, those lost in the darkness need guidence, to know themselves better ,than knowing the world, hatred is the weakness.
