its all about the phonetic pattern of varying polarities in this game that makes ikaruga tick(it has the same polarity system throughout the ENTIRE game). if you have good dodging skills(when really that's a little slacking in this game because you can just straight up absorb half of the bullets any way) and can think 2 steps ahead to know when 2 change polarities(save the fact that dis guy is controlling 2 guys at the same time which truly makes this vid a masterpiece), you can fare quite well
Like i said, normal is easy. But seriously, ambidexterity is only part of what this guy is doing, I mean he's concentrating on two different units at once and using them flawlessly. I realize almost anyone can achieve this but it would take a TON of practice and probably a dash of raw talent on top of that.

any turd can live through that section once you learn to control yourself because of the shoot back thing, but perfectly chaining the whole thing is the difficult part. and doing it with 2 planes? my head just exploded.
you can play ikaruga like a regular shooter and yeah, it won't be that special. but once you understand the scoring system is based on color chains the game kicks you in the nuts and fucks your girlfriend.
If you watch whats going on, you, you're see that you don't have a shield, and that your ship can switch between black and white.
If you're ship is black, you can absorb black bullets, and the same goes for white.
You die instantly if the opposite colour touches you.
It's hard because the game is set up like a puzzle game as well as a vertical shooter. And rather than just avoid stupid amounts of fire, you have to think about the route you're taking through the screen.
his nerves are so highly strung that they constantly need stimulation so he twirls the ships around in circles when he has the chance lol.
This is VTF-INO, and the vid is pretty old. He's been working for years now on a strat to get every last one of those enemies from the outside. A perfect level would yield 243 chains for him. In single player, the world record is 237 chains. I can get 232 chains here and damn, that took 200 hours of practice! \m/

I'm amazed - he was using the white ship to protect the black ship and teh black ship to protect the white ship, all while moving around, nuking the enemies and killing the boss.
There is a whole sub-culture within the shmups culture of "dual-play", that is playing shooters with one hands controlling a plane each. It started in Japan as a way for the really good players to add a new challenge once they had already mastered single player.

this is impressive but not that crazy if u notice he rarely shoot with both planes, also he is not really moving that fast and that stage is pretty slow moving so i say he need more practices. ppl don't go crazy over this because it is not that serious and it is not both plane are all over the place instead they are stuck together so really it is just one plane but with double the fire power. i say 3/5 for trying and need more practice

come wtf it is not like he is play raiden where u die with one hit. if he was playing raiden and not dying while playing with both planes now thats skill. Ikaruga is not that hard any good player in vertical scrolling shooter game can beat game without any diffculties and u have a heath bar
Someone obviously hasn't played Ikaruga before - there is no health bar, the only way to not die in one hit is if your ship is the same colour as the bullet that hits you. Any bullet of an opposite colour and your dead, no exceptions.
Do some research on a game before claming its easy.
Aren't you to going alittle over the top? I mean, he gave his reasons and they were all reasonable. And in all truthness, Ikaruga isn't that difficult. Even though it's one of my favorite games, they're are much harder SHMUP's.
Ikaruga's still up there in terms of difficulty though, maybe not as hard as say, Radiant Silvergun or Abadox but it's still quite an achievement to play 2 player by yourself well on any SHMUP.
I dont know what 'stuff' you guys are smoking but this display of ambidexterity is truly amazing. This is NOT easy, anyone who claims it is is simply an idiot. Do us all a favor, go home, pop in Ikaruga, play with 2 ships and record it. We'll even give you a few weeks to practice. Show and prove, dont just talk $hit.

You all say he's amazing because he didn't die, and because he used one ship as a shield. Those are good, but I thought the most amazing thing was the fact that he managed to keep separate chains going for both ships and didn't break them.
You know, playing guitar probably takes more coordination than playing piano, right? You've got to worry about your left hand playing the right chords, and being at the right fret, while your right hand has to make sure it picks the right strings (And doesn't drop the pick into the sound hole).
I could do that given some practice. Besides, just make sure only one is shooting to learn a bit more easily, and once you plan out routes for your ships to go and avoid the bullets, it'd not be terribly ungodly hard. It'd just take a ton of practice and planning.

what i was basically saying is, that, being that good at ikaruga, is mainly due to approximately one billion hours of playing, rather than having that much skill.
If you dont believe everyone can be good I can respect that. I still dont believe just any Good pianist/guitarist can do this; knowing them helps but doesn't mean they can become good at ikaruga. G/p players can just close their eyes and play off of instinct and feel. This takes more constant eye/hand coordination as not every bullet pattern is the same (he messes up a movement/dies once, bullet pattern is different now). Hell, people good at the guitar usually suck at piano and vice versa
i bought the game and although i've been playing the piano for more than 10 years, i didn't comlplete the 5 levels even in easy mode without running out of continues till now.
i still beleave practicing long would make that possible, but i apparently underestimated the time needed.
yeah mate I'm a pretty good guitarist (and a crap piano player) and there's no way I could play that hard motherfucker of a game like that. Well maybe if I played it for 10 years like I did guitar, but awesome as ikaruga is, I'd rather play guitar for that long instead.

Anyone with coordination like that requires some form of respect. It doesn't matter how much you play or practice, you'll never get good enough to do something like that without some high quality genetics.

Just like not everyone can be a fighter pilot or a pro driver just by practice alone.

this is impressive but not that crazy if u notice he rarely shoot with both planes, also he is not really moving that fast and that stage is pretty slow moving so i say he need more practices. ppl don't go crazy over this because it is not that serious and it is not both plane are all over the place instead they are stuck together so really it is just one plane but with double the fire power. i say 3/5 for trying and need more practice

no offence, but two hands on ikaruga, how is that not crazy? How can you accomplish this game barley dying with two planes one person? The fact ikaruga is very difficult and this man here pulls off the impossible. Plus do you know how hard it is to keep the planes together and not die like 50 times. It's crazy and totally insane with skills like this.

come wtf it is not like he is play raiden where u die with one hit. if he was playing raiden and not dying while playing with both planes now thats skill. Ikaruga is not that hard any good player in vertical scrolling shooter game can beat game without any diffculties and u have a heath bar

Someone obviously hasn't played Ikaruga before - there is no health bar, the only way to not die in one hit is if your ship is the same colour as the bullet that hits you. Any bullet of an opposite colour and your dead, no exceptions.
Do some research on a game before claming its easy.

Ikaruga's still up there in terms of difficulty though, maybe not as hard as say, Radiant Silvergun or Abadox but it's still quite an achievement to play 2 player by yourself well on any SHMUP.

seriously though, keeping separate chains going for both ships, killing every enemy, AND not dying in the process is quite an amazing feat! id love to see this guy tackle hard mode and topple some of the high scores for this game

he is very very good, but you seem to forget that the attack patterns are the same everytime.
it's more about knowing the attacks by heart, than having skill.
and concerning the coordination... any good pianist or guitar player could do the same with a little practice!

You know, playing guitar probably takes more coordination than playing piano, right? You've got to worry about your left hand playing the right chords, and being at the right fret, while your right hand has to make sure it picks the right strings (And doesn't drop the pick into the sound hole).

Hell no. Playing the piano often requires perfect coordinance with both hands on an entire keyboard, rather than just 5 strings.
Anyway, on topic; What amazes me the most is that he doesnt mix the ships up. I'd go crazy in no time.

I could do that given some practice. Besides, just make sure only one is shooting to learn a bit more easily, and once you plan out routes for your ships to go and avoid the bullets, it'd not be terribly ungodly hard. It'd just take a ton of practice and planning.

unlike you, i don't think that everyone can be a GOOD pianist/guitar player.
as a result, i don't believe that everybody can do anything, just to make clear why i don't "extend that logic".
what i was basically saying is, that, being that good at ikaruga, is mainly due to approximately one billion hours of playing, rather than having that much skill.

If you dont believe everyone can be good I can respect that. I still dont believe just any Good pianist/guitarist can do this; knowing them helps but doesn't mean they can become good at ikaruga. G/p players can just close their eyes and play off of instinct and feel. This takes more constant eye/hand coordination as not every bullet pattern is the same (he messes up a movement/dies once, bullet pattern is different now). Hell, people good at the guitar usually suck at piano and vice versa

i bought the game and although i've been playing the piano for more than 10 years, i didn't comlplete the 5 levels even in easy mode without running out of continues till now.
i still beleave practicing long would make that possible, but i apparently underestimated the time needed.
i hope the conflict is settled now^^

yeah mate I'm a pretty good guitarist (and a crap piano player) and there's no way I could play that hard motherfucker of a game like that. Well maybe if I played it for 10 years like I did guitar, but awesome as ikaruga is, I'd rather play guitar for that long instead.
