The band technically had money, but they were by no means wealthy, and the band members at this point had pretty low income, never having more than a couple thousand bucks to their name at this point. I believe each member got about $4000 after this tour (freaky styley). I got this out of Scar Tissue, so yeah, at this point they weren't starving, and this was their day job, but it didn't really pay well.

The main reason that the Chili Peppers went from funk like this to what they are now is because Anthony started feeling more comfortabl with his singing. So they utuilized his voice and started doing more beautiful less funky music.

They lost it when they saw things like californication sold much more than what they did on their first records.

Not many people has what it takes to really appreciate funk, so its not really their fault.

Well yeah, there's nothing wrong with branching out. By The Way took it a little too far I think though, with all the soft songs that didn't even have much melody. But their latest album had a decent amount of funk. Their next album will really show where they stand I think. I don't want them to keep making BSSM or Freaky Styley over and over, but I don't want to see them lose their unique sound and style either.

Freaky styley is my fav album, the musicanship and energy is fantastic. It doesn't sound like the modern chilis though which is awesome...you don't get many bands which grow with time and stay fresh.

I didn't really like Freaky Styley... I think its their worst album. For me, their best is By The Way, and then a tie between The Uplift Mofo Party Plan and Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

Uplift is their best pre-mainstream album.
